Biotechnology is the application of the principles of chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology to the development of new technologies. Both Microbiology and Chemistry share in the teaching and administration of the program, The Honours and cooperative work-study (co-op) programs provide experience in government, private sector and research laboratories.

Beyond the first-year level there are courses in every important field of French language and literature, from the Middle Ages to the present day, including the literature of French Canada, French-speaking African countries and translation techniques. France, Quebec French-speaking African cinema are also taught and the department has specialists in these areas. Each year a number of visiting distinguished scholars give lectures on their special interest, and in some cases, conduct seminars for senior students.

As a major in human resource management at the University of Manitoba, students will learn how to help companies recruit and select qualified people, effectively train and develop a workforce, generate effective total compensation systems, manage employee performance and employee relations, foster and maintain an engaged workforce and promote talented people through the organization. When these activities are done well, organizations are suitably prepared to accomplish their strategic directives, and are staffed with the right people in the right positions at the right time – a motivated and committed workforce who work together to build the organization’s success.

Philosophy is the study of reality, knowledge, values, logic and related topics. The existence of free will or God, the nature of science, art, emotions and language, ethical theory, proofs, fallacies, and so on. It is one of the oldest subjects of study in the Western world. Philosophy students are trained to think abstractly and write clearly, and rationally assess ideas in a way that few others can equal.

Chemistry is the science concerned with the properties of atoms and molecules, of which all matter is composed. Chemistry is important for all aspects of the material world - food production; the manufacture of medicines, textiles, and plastics; energy production; identifying environmental problems and remedies; and understanding the workings of living organisms. The Honours and cooperative work-study (co-op) programs provide experience in government, private sector and research laboratories.

The Theatre Program in the Department of English, Film, and Theatre is focused yet multi-faceted, offering both creative and intellectual opportunities. An intensive, hands-on experience in every aspect of play creation is a hallmark of University of Manitoba Theatre. The interrelationship between the academic program and the Black Hole Theatre Company provides students with excellent balance in the creation and interpretation of theatre. We provide instruction in theoretical approaches and critical and practical methods. Both Film and Theatre courses offer options for studying performance, production, and interpretation.

Astronomy and astrophysics examine the universe, galaxies and stars as well as phenomena such as the birth of stars, how explosions of stars create fast moving cosmic ray particles and pulsars, and how the rotation of a galaxy reveals the presence of dark matter. A planetarium and two astronomical observatories enhance this program.

Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms: bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and algae. Programs provide a comprehensive study of modern microbiology ranging from environmental to medical to molecular microbiology. Many courses include laboratory components to develop skills in microbiological techniques.
