Anthropology is a biocultural discipline grounded in a comparative and cross-cultural perspective and concerned with diverse aspects of human life. While broadly educated, individual anthropologists generally specialize in particular approaches, collectively contributing to a rich and holistic view of humanity. The University of Manitoba offers undergraduate and graduate training in anthropology’s four sub-disciplines: cultural anthropology, archaeology, physical anthropology, and anthropological linguistics.

Biotechnology is the application of the principles of chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology to the development of new technologies. Both Microbiology and Chemistry share in the teaching and administration of the program, The Honours and cooperative work-study (co-op) programs provide experience in government, private sector and research laboratories.

Animal Systems focuses on the nutrition, management and welfare of livestock and poultry. Animal science professionals are committed to devising innovative solutions to the challenges posed by a growing world population, shifting diet patterns, limited resources, and changing climatic conditions.

The Bachelor of Science (Agriculture) in Animal Systems provides students with a firm understanding of animal production, including genetics, anatomy/physiology, nutrition, health and reproduction. It also provides courses in business management and communications.

Co-op Options
The Cooperative Education option integrates the student’s academic study with practical work experience in industry, government and the farming profession. To obtain the co-op designation, you must complete three 4-month work terms. Two of these can be during the summer. This program option will extend your degree time by one semester (slightly longer if you take more work terms in winter).

Linguistics is the study of how human language is structured, acquired and used, how it changes over time, and how words and constructions mean what they do in human interaction. The program offers courses in a wide variety of the sub-fields of linguistics: the nature of meaning, sounds and patterns of sounds, the structure of words and sentences, anatomical foundations of language, historical linguistics, the role of language in society, signed language, and the relationship between language and gender.

Entrepreneurship is about creating value through identifying opportunities and gathering and managing resources to capitalize on those opportunities.

Students in the Entrepreneurship/Small Business major explore new venture startups, social initiatives, small business management and family business.

Students will encounter questions including:

• What is creativity and how does it relate to entrepreneurship?
• What is opportunity and how do businesses start in response to perceived opportunities?
• How does family involvement impact the business and family?
   

The Diploma in Dental Hygiene is a 3-year program that prepares students to work as dental hygienists in a variety of employment settings. Dental hygiene is a self-regulated health service profession concerned primarily with the prevention of oral disease and the promotion of optimum oral health. As a licensed professional, the dental hygienists' scope of practice is regulated by provincial legislation. The dental hygiene process of care consists of five components: assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate, which guide dental hygiene practice in every setting. Dental hygienists work in private dental offices, community health centres, educational institutions, personal care homes and various other environments.

Agribusiness is the business and economics of food. It focuses on all of the factors that influence how food travels around the globe, including: finance, government policy, international trade, risk management, the environment, food safety, and regional development.

The Bachelor of Science (Agribusiness) degree gives students a thorough understanding of Canada's food supply chain, from producer to consumer. Students learn how to market and distribute food products to customers within the community and around the world.

Co-op programs

The Diploma in Agriculture is a hands on two-year program which prepares students to manage a farm or work in an agricultural business. Courses cover everything from agricultural production to marketing and business management. Students will develop the communication and leadership skills needed to thrive in the industry whether in marketing and financial services, livestock and crop supply, crop management, agricultural merchandising, or managing a farm.

Co-op options
The Cooperative Education option integrates the student’s academic study with practical work experience in industry, government and the farming profession. Cooperative Education in the Diploma of Agriculture incorporates one summer work term after the first year of study.

University 1 offers the unique opportunity for students to plan for one or more target degree programs during their first year of university. University 1 is designed to meet the needs of students who are not sure which program they are going to pursue as well as students who are seeking advanced entry to a specific program. This allows students to design their schedule to meet the admission and/or first year course requirements of their target program(s).

If students are not yet sure which specific degree path is right for them, they have the flexibility to explore a variety of subject areas while in University 1. All of the courses that a student takes in University 1 can become part of a student's degree program. The program assists students transitioning from high school to university by providing a large support network for first year students in adapting to university life and academic expectations.

What is unique about this program at the U of M?
The First Year Planning Guide is an online resource to help guide students through decisions about first year course selection and degree planning.

• The majority of students at the U of M begin their first year of studies in University 1.
• Students who complete 24 to 30 credit hours of coursework while in University 1 will be eligible to transit to the Faculty of Arts or Faculty of Science.
• The First 6 Weeks Program is a week by week introduction to academic skills and services that help students adjust to university life.
• The Next 6 Weeks Program is a week by week continuation of the First 6 Weeks Program that continues to help students become acquainted with university life, preparing them to begin looking and planning ahead.
• Registration and Academic Advisors provide students with specialized support and guidance in:

  • Decisions about course selection and degree planning

  • Challenges or difficulties that affect a student's studies   

The Department of Religion at the University of Manitoba focuses on three areas of study: religions in the West (especially Christianity and Judaism), religions in the East (Islam, Hinduism, Yoga, Buddhism), and religion and culture. Method and theory is an integral part of our program as is an emphasis on world religions. Courses are mainly tradition based or topics based. Our topical courses are comparative, for example, dealing with death and mourning rituals in world religions.
