Civil engineers plan, design, supervise construction, manage, and maintain facilities that are familiar to most people. They are involved with infrastructure and environmental projects such as bridges, dams, highways, water and waste-water treatment plants, airports, and flood control systems. Civil engineers increasingly use new technologies such as Geographical Information/Positioning Systems, advanced materials, remote sensing and monitoring in their projects.

Courses include engineering materials, fluid mechanics, structural design, infrastructure engineering and construction management, finite element method, application of geographic information systems, economics, transportation planning, environmental analysis and design, hydrology, and technology and society.

The University of Manitoba’s Italian program allows students to master the Italian language and acquire cultural knowledge. An emphasis is placed on language skills as well as in inter-cultural skills.

• The Italian courses offered at the University of Manitoba not only teach grammar and contemporary literature but also touch upon Italian culture and history. The Bachelor of Fine Arts is designed to provide a balanced learning of theory and practice. Studio courses focus on the production of art and design, though studio practice, related theory, and the technical education necessary to become an educator, or a professional creative artist in fine art or applied fields.

All undergraduate students take first and second-year studios in experimental and foundation studies, followed by more intensive study in specific fine art and design disciplines beginning third year. Students graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and deep disciplinary knowledge along with strong critical thinking skills and the agility to problem solve and connect the dots across a wide range of fields.

The BFA Honours degree allows you to complete an additional year of study including electives, as well as self-directed studio work and research.

The Art History program offers students an opportunity to consider, in a cultural context, both Western and non-Western artistic traditions with an emphasis on the former from the Renaissance to the present. While all courses acknowledge methodological issues, the program also offers courses in art theory and criticism at the second- and third-year levels. Students enrolled in this program broaden their knowledge of art production with studio electives.

In your first year, you will gain knowledge about the development of art worldwide from the prehistoric period to the present, learning about artists, art movements, directions, styles, and social contexts. 

Second year courses offer concentration in specific areas such as the Medieval to Renaissance era, the Renaissance to the Baroque, the Modern to the Contemporary as well as courses that have a single focal area such as Indigenous Art History, Women in Art History, and Art Writing. 

As you progress through your degree, more defined curriculum related to one artistic movement or era will be explored, such as Contemporary Art, Canadian Art History, Bauhaus, Art in New Media, History of Photography, History of Ceramics, Islamic Art, and Curatorial Studies. Special Topics courses address faculty and student interests in current issues and new approaches to the discipline of art history. Seminar courses such as Contemporary Indigenous Art and Manitoba Modernism focus on student-driven discussions.

Biotechnology is the application of the principles of chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology to the development of new technologies. Both Microbiology and Chemistry share in the teaching and administration of the program, The Honours and cooperative work-study (co-op) programs provide experience in government, private sector and research laboratories.

To transfer into the honours program, you must first successfully complete 69 credit hours of study in the Art History general program, with a degree GPA of 2.5. If you are a current student and wish to transfer to the BFA Art History honours program,

Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms: bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and algae. Programs provide a comprehensive study of modern microbiology ranging from environmental to medical to molecular microbiology. Many courses include laboratory components to develop skills in microbiological techniques.
