The Bachelor of Recreation Management and Community Development combines a strong theoretical framework with practical experiences to help students learn about community development, sport and event management, sustainable tourism and environmental management.

The study of economics helps us understand our world: wages and employment, economic growth, productivity, wealth and poverty, government budgets and taxation, resource exploitation, business practices, inflation, recession, regional economic differences. In the undergraduate program in economics we study the history and current reality of these issues, and the principles and techniques necessary to gain a sound understanding of the choices and problems facing us during our lifetime. Students earning a general BA degree in economics can take a wide variety of economics courses while still pursuing interests in other fields. The advanced BA degree in Economics provides greater specialization. The Honours program is intellectually stimulating and offers smaller third and forth year classes. 

Linguistics is the study of how human language is structured, acquired and used, how it changes over time, and how words and constructions mean what they do in human interaction. The program offers courses in a wide variety of the sub-fields of linguistics: the nature of meaning, sounds and patterns of sounds, the structure of words and sentences, anatomical foundations of language, historical linguistics, the role of language in society, signed language, and the relationship between language and gender.

A business education is the foundation for economic, political and social systems at all levels, and a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a generalist major is your ticket to a successful, productive career in the field of your choice.

Environmental Studies focuses on the complex relationships between humans, whether as individuals, communities or institutions, and the environment. It examines the social, cultural, institutional, political, policy and legal aspects surrounding environmental issues and concerns. The Environmental Studies Program uses not only scientific approaches but also traditional knowledge, and in doing so broadens the ways in which the environment is viewed. This is illustrated using local, regional, and international case studies, which reveal the implications of diversity and inequality. Students gain a broad and integrated understanding of diverse fields, and develop a wide awareness of human and environmental concerns, such as human health, community and urban planning.

Biochemistry is the study of the chemical composition, activity and constituents of living systems. Both Microbiology and Chemistry share in the teaching and administration of the program. The Honours and cooperative work-study (co-op) programs provide experience in government, private sector and research laboratories.

Interesting courses and unique opportunities
Within the Biochemistry programs, you can take courses and conduct research in topics ranging from chemistry to microbiology to biology including: cellular signaling and cancer biology, molecular biology, structural biology, biophysics and bioenergetics, genomics and genetics. Many courses include laboratory components to develop skills in scientific techniques. 

Genetics is the science of heredity, which deals with the mechanisms of inheritance. The Genetics program is interdisciplinary, comprising courses from Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Chemistry, Arts, Medicine and Agricultural and Food Science. The study of Genetics is divided into three broad areas: Classical genetics, population genetics, and molecular genetics. Students will study advances in medicine, agricultural techniques, heritable IQ, genetically modified organisms, genetic counselling and gene therapy. The Honours and cooperative work-study (co-op) programs provide experience in government, private sector and research laboratories.

Criminology is concerned with the complex social phenomena of crime and criminalization. The criminology program engages students in a systematic study of the nature and extent of crime and criminalization along with the array of agencies and programs designed to prevent, control, and respond to criminal activity over time and place. Attention is given to specific issues related to gender, race, class and crime, youth and crime, violence and victimization, criminal law and procedure, policing and crime prevention, restorative justice, and global criminology. Courses in the criminology program are taught primarily from a sociological perspective, with emphasis placed on research, program development, and policy analysis.

Actuarial mathematics involves the application of mathematical disciplines, particularly probability, statistics, and risk theory, to real-life financial problems involving future uncertainty. This analytical approach helps people and organizations quantify and reduce financial risk in areas as diverse as life, health, disability, marine, property and casualty insurance; annuities; and pension and employee benefits plans.

Philosophy students are trained to think abstractly and write clearly, and rationally assess ideas in a way that few others can equal.
