The Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering (ECE) programs prepare students for a career in Engineering by engaging them in studies related to core and specialty areas through both theoretical and hands-on teaching methods. ECE students have many courses in common, including math, physics, circuits and electronics, programming, microprocessors, digital systems, economics, engineering law, technical writing, technology and society, and a complementary studies elective in an Arts or Management discipline. In their final year, students participate in a team-based group design project that allows them both the opportunity to put into practice knowledge and skills acquired throughout their program and the exposure to the concepts of team work and project management.

The Department of Native Studies offers a Minor in Native Languages; most of the language courses taught in fall and winter are Ojibway and Cree at both the introductory and the intermediate level. In the summer, Summer Institutes in one of these languages are offered bringing together the learning of and about the language and stories in the language.

Political Studies examines the dynamics of human interaction in which individuals and groups compete, and cooperate, to achieve their goals, in the context of competing visions, values and interests. It is therefore a study of power, particularly in connection with law and public policy. Because people often disagree about, say, civil liberties, sustainable development, and distributive justice, they divide themselves into various groups: nations, political parties, trade unions, business associations, environmental organizations, to mention but a few. Political studies tries to understand what happens when individuals and groups struggle with one another to achieve their different goals. Within states there are mechanisms called governments to oversee and guide political struggle, and studying politics can help us better appreciate why various types of government behave the way they do.

The Leadership and Organizations major draws on foundational courses in organizational behaviour and organizational theory to build insight into successful leadership.

Leadership and Organizations is an ideal second major in combination with any of the functional majors at Asper. The skills learned in a Leadership and Organizations major will equip you to more effectively analyze, advocate, lead and manage. 

Criminology is concerned with the complex social phenomena of crime and criminalization. The criminology program engages students in a systematic study of the nature and extent of crime and criminalization along with the array of agencies and programs designed to prevent, control, and respond to criminal activity over time and place. Attention is given to specific issues related to gender, race, class and crime, youth and crime, violence and victimization, criminal law and procedure, policing and crime prevention, restorative justice, and global criminology. Courses in the criminology program are taught primarily from a sociological perspective, with emphasis placed on research, program development, and policy analysis.

Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space, and change. Mathematicians seek out patterns and formulate new conjectures which provide the language, reasoning, and analytic tools that many other disciplines use to investigate their areas.

Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms: bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and algae. Programs provide a comprehensive study of modern microbiology ranging from environmental to medical to molecular microbiology. Many courses include laboratory components to develop skills in microbiological techniques. The Honours and cooperative work-study (co-op) programs provide experience in government, private sector and research laboratories.

The millennium from the end of the Roman empire to the Renaissance (500-1500 C.E.) was a formative period in the history of European civilization. This program offers students a broad approach to the period, through its literature, art, languages, history, music, and more.

Linguistics is the study of how human language is structured, acquired and used, how it changes over time, and how words and constructions mean what they do in human interaction. The program offers courses in a wide variety of the sub-fields of linguistics: the nature of meaning, sounds and patterns of sounds, the structure of words and sentences, anatomical foundations of language, historical linguistics, the role of language in society, signed language, and the relationship between language and gender.
