The Theatre Program in the Department of English, Film, and Theatre is focused yet multi-faceted, offering both creative and intellectual opportunities. An intensive, hands-on experience in every aspect of play creation is a hallmark of University of Manitoba Theatre. The interrelationship between the academic program and the Black Hole Theatre Company provides students with excellent balance in the creation and interpretation of theatre. We provide instruction in theoretical approaches and critical and practical methods. Both Film and Theatre courses offer options for studying performance, production, and interpretation.

Food scientists fuel the minds that feed the world. They study the physical, microbiological, and chemical makeup of food and use their findings to develop the nutritious, delicious and innovative foods products that line supermarket shelves everywhere.

In the Bachelor of Science (Food Science), students study food safety, chemistry, microbiology, engineering, and sensory science. They develop a greater understanding of the fate of agricultural raw materials, and how such materials are processed and formulated into food products before being presented to the consumer.

Program focus options

• Science – Explores the science and technology of food processing, packaging, and preservation of foods
• Business – Explores the business and economics of food production, including marketing and finance, for students who wish to work in the food industry as business managers or entrepreneurs.

Co-op option
The Cooperative Education option integrates the student’s academic study with practical work experience in industry, government and the farming profession. To obtain the co-op designation, you must complete three 4-month work terms. Two of these can be during the summer. This program option will extend your degree time by one semester (slightly longer if you take more work terms in winter).

This Faculty of Arts interdisciplinary program explores the massive social and cultural changes in Central and East European countries that have dominated the world's attention. In addition to language courses, the CEES program also offers courses on literatures, cinemas, and cultures of the region, the issues of state formation and democratization, privatization and the creation of new market economies, and more. There are several active student clubs that enhance learning and travel study programs are also available.

The Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering (ECE) programs prepare students for a career in Engineering by engaging them in studies related to core and specialty areas through both theoretical and hands-on teaching methods. ECE students have many courses in common, including math, physics, circuits and electronics, programming, microprocessors, digital systems, economics, engineering law, technical writing, technology and society, and a complementary studies elective in an Arts or Management discipline. In their final year, students participate in a team-based group design project that allows them both the opportunity to put into practice knowledge and skills acquired throughout their program and the exposure to the concepts of team work and project management.

Linguistics is the study of how human language is structured, acquired and used, how it changes over time, and how words and constructions mean what they do in human interaction. The program offers courses in a wide variety of the sub-fields of linguistics: the nature of meaning, sounds and patterns of sounds, the structure of words and sentences, anatomical foundations of language, historical linguistics, the role of language in society, signed language, and the relationship between language and gender.

The Judaic Studies program warmly welcomes Jewish and non-Jewish scholars and students. The program offers fascinating insights into the societies and cultures Jewish people have been part of from Biblical times to twenty-first century Canada. Judaic Studies promotes the study of Jewish civilization, Jewish religious expressions and traditions, and of Jewish cultural, social, and political formations and movements in all their variety. For Jewish students, Judaic Studies is a way of exploring their heritage and building on previous study of Jewish languages, history and texts.

Political Studies examines the dynamics of human interaction in which individuals and groups compete, and cooperate, to achieve their goals, in the context of competing visions, values and interests. It is therefore a study of power, particularly in connection with law and public policy. Because people often disagree about, say, civil liberties, sustainable development, and distributive justice, they divide themselves into various groups: nations, political parties, trade unions, business associations, environmental organizations, to mention but a few. Political studies tries to understand what happens when individuals and groups struggle with one another to achieve their different goals. Within states there are mechanisms called governments to oversee and guide political struggle, and studying politics can help us better appreciate why various types of government behave the way they do.

Criminology is concerned with the complex social phenomena of crime and criminalization. The criminology program engages students in a systematic study of the nature and extent of crime and criminalization along with the array of agencies and programs designed to prevent, control, and respond to criminal activity over time and place. Attention is given to specific issues related to gender, race, class and crime, youth and crime, violence and victimization, criminal law and procedure, policing and crime prevention, restorative justice, and global criminology. Courses in the criminology program are taught primarily from a sociological perspective, with emphasis placed on research, program development, and policy analysis.

The Geological Sciences or Earth Sciences are multidisciplinary sciences that apply principles from many different fields to deal with all aspects of the solid Earth and its interactions with the hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere and Solar System. Quantitative data is provided through fieldwork, laboratory analysis and theoretical modeling for understanding the physical, chemical and biological behaviour and characteristics of Earth materials – rocks, minerals, fossils, liquids and gases. Once the nature and extent of the Earth’s natural evolution is understood and quantified, as well as the more recent environmental impact of human activity, they can help tackle many resource extraction, mineral processing and environmental problems, and predict future changes to the Earth.
