Biotechnology is the application of the principles of chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology to the development of new technologies. Both Microbiology and Chemistry share in the teaching and administration of the program, The Honours and cooperative work-study (co-op) programs provide experience in government, private sector and research laboratories.

Agribusiness is the business and economics of food. It focuses on all of the factors that influence how food travels around the globe, including: finance, government policy, international trade, risk management, the environment, food safety, and regional development.

The Bachelor of Science (Agribusiness) degree gives students a thorough understanding of Canada's food supply chain, from producer to consumer. Students learn how to market and distribute food products to customers within the community and around the world.

Co-op programs
The Cooperative Education option integrates the student's academic study with practical work experience in industry, government and the farming profession. To obtain the co-op designation, students must complete three 4-month work terms. Two of these can be during the summer. This program option will extend your degree time by one semester (slightly longer if a student takes more work terms in winter).

Geophysicists use the principles of physics and mathematics to study the Earth’s surface, internal structure and composition, atmosphere and magnetosphere. The many overlapping fields in Geophysics include: Earthquake Seismology, Exploration Seismology, Electromagnetic Geophysics, Gravity and Magnetic Geophysics, Geodesy, Geomagnetism as well as Geodynamics and High-Pressure Geophysics.

Anthropology is a biocultural discipline grounded in a comparative and cross-cultural perspective and concerned with diverse aspects of human life. While broadly educated, individual anthropologists generally specialize in particular approaches, collectively contributing to a rich and holistic view of humanity. The University of Manitoba offers undergraduate and graduate training in anthropology’s four sub-disciplines: cultural anthropology, archaeology, physical anthropology, and anthropological linguistics.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts General is designed to provide a balanced learning of theory and practice. Studio courses focus on the production of art and design, though studio practice, related theory, and the technical education necessary to become an educator, or a professional creative artist in fine art or applied fields.

All undergraduate students take first and second-year studios in experimental and foundation studies, followed by more intensive study in specific fine art and design disciplines beginning third year. Students graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and deep disciplinary knowledge along with strong critical thinking skills and the agility to problem solve and connect the dots across a wide range of fields.

Environmental Science examines the physical, chemical, and biological components of the Earth’s environment, its diverse systems, and the complex ways in which they interact. Environmental scientists use a variety of scientific and analytical techniques to measure environmental parameters, to evaluate the state of environmental systems, and to project the changes in environmental systems as a result of human activities and climate change. Natural and physical systems behavior is key to evaluating the implications of human activities such as agriculture, industry, and resource extraction, processing, and use. Environmental problems such as contamination and pollution, global warming, and biodiversity loss are studied with regard to past, present, and future practices and solutions.

Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms: bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and algae. Programs provide a comprehensive study of modern microbiology ranging from environmental to medical to molecular microbiology. Many courses include laboratory components to develop skills in microbiological techniques.

Plant Biotechnology uses applied biology and chemistry to develop advanced knowledge of crop plants and their pathogens. Plant Biotechnologists develop new technologies for crop improvement.

The Bachelor of Science (Agriculture) in Plant Biotechnology provides students with a solid background in genetics, pathology, the physiology of plant growth, and the development of crop plants for food, feed and industrial uses. It also introduce students to the fundamentals and applications of the advanced biotechnologies currently being used in crop development industries and research.

The International Business major offers a variety of courses designed to help students understand and manage globalization from a strategic and functional perspective. Courses are taught by faculty members from diverse geographical backgrounds who have vast experience living overseas and conducting research and business abroad. In addition to imparting knowledge through relevant coursework, there are several international exchange programs that provide an opportunity for students to develop their skills in a direct manner by living and studying abroad. 

University 1 offers the unique opportunity for students to plan for one or more target degree programs during their first year of university. University 1 is designed to meet the needs of students who are not sure which program they are going to pursue as well as students who are seeking advanced entry to a specific program. This allows students to design their schedule to meet the admission and/or first year course requirements of their target program(s).

If students are not yet sure which specific degree path is right for them, they have the flexibility to explore a variety of subject areas while in University 1. All of the courses that a student takes in University 1 can become part of a student's degree program. The program assists students transitioning from high school to university by providing a large support network for first year students in adapting to university life and academic expectations.

What is unique about this program at the U of M?
The First Year Planning Guide is an online resource to help guide students through decisions about first year course selection and degree planning.

• The majority of students at the U of M begin their first year of studies in University 1.
• Students who complete 24 to 30 credit hours of coursework while in University 1 will be eligible to transit to the Faculty of Arts or Faculty of Science.
• The First 6 Weeks Program is a week by week introduction to academic skills and services that help students adjust to university life.
• The Next 6 Weeks Program is a week by week continuation of the First 6 Weeks Program that continues to help students become acquainted with university life, preparing them to begin looking and planning ahead.
