Film Studies at the U of M provides students with a unique opportunity to create a feature length film, as well as make short films, working with their peers in a collective context which is an experience very different from that at other institutions. Our faculty have broad mix of scholarly and practical expertise in areas that address multimedia issues in areas like film and surveillance, documentary, and television. Faculty teach a mix of courses on topics such as film aesthetics, video gaming, international cinema and filmmaking every year. Our students all have access to the Media Lab, a post-production space that offers students the use of cutting-edge software and an extensive DVD lending library. Our film production equipment includes up-to-date digital cameras, sound recording technology, a Steadi-Cam harness, and more.

Environmental Studies focuses on the complex relationships between humans, whether as individuals, communities or institutions, and the environment. It examines the social, cultural, institutional, political, policy and legal aspects surrounding environmental issues and concerns. The Environmental Studies Program uses not only scientific approaches but also traditional knowledge, and in doing so broadens the ways in which the environment is viewed. This is illustrated using local, regional, and international case studies, which reveal the implications of diversity and inequality. Students gain a broad and integrated understanding of diverse fields, and develop a wide awareness of human and environmental concerns, such as human health, community and urban planning.

Genetics is the science of heredity, which deals with the mechanisms of inheritance. The Genetics program is interdisciplinary, comprising courses from Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Chemistry, Arts, Medicine and Agricultural and Food Science. The study of Genetics is divided into three broad areas: Classical genetics, population genetics, and molecular genetics. Students will study advances in medicine, agricultural techniques, heritable IQ, genetically modified organisms, genetic counselling and gene therapy. The Honours and cooperative work-study (co-op) programs provide experience in government, private sector and research laboratories.

Biology is the study of life as it has evolved and is evolving on earth. All aspects of life are examined, from molecular processes inside cells, to large scale ecological interactions between organisms in their environment, and how the changing environment shapes these interactions.

Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space, and change. Mathematicians seek out patterns and formulate new conjectures which provide the language, reasoning, and analytic tools that many other disciplines use to investigate their areas.

In this program the emphasis is on Mathematics and another field of study. For example: Mathematics and Computer Science; Mathematics and Economics; or Mathematics and Statistics.

Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms: bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and algae. Programs provide a comprehensive study of modern microbiology ranging from environmental to medical to molecular microbiology. Many courses include laboratory components to develop skills in microbiological techniques.

Students pursuing Latin American Studies learn about the cultural, political, social, and economic dynamics of a multifaceted and diverse region comprising over twenty countries, different geographic regions, and a rich history. They will also learn about conflicts generated by unequal relations of power, and fundamental issues such as human rights, Indigenous mobilization, and political democratization. This interdisciplinary program features courses from various departments, including Anthropology, History and French, Spanish, and Italian.

Anthropology is a biocultural discipline grounded in a comparative and cross-cultural perspective and concerned with diverse aspects of human life. While broadly educated, individual anthropologists generally specialize in particular approaches, collectively contributing to a rich and holistic view of humanity. The University of Manitoba offers undergraduate and graduate training in anthropology’s four sub-disciplines: cultural anthropology, archaeology, physical anthropology, and anthropological linguistics.

Criminology is concerned with the complex social phenomena of crime and criminalization. The criminology program engages students in a systematic study of the nature and extent of crime and criminalization along with the array of agencies and programs designed to prevent, control, and respond to criminal activity over time and place. Attention is given to specific issues related to gender, race, class and crime, youth and crime, violence and victimization, criminal law and procedure, policing and crime prevention, restorative justice, and global criminology. Courses in the criminology program are taught primarily from a sociological perspective, with emphasis placed on research, program development, and policy analysis.
