The Interdisciplinary Health Program offers education and training leading to a Bachelor of Health Studies degree. The Interdisciplinary Health Program (IHP) is a joint program between the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences in partnership with the Faculties of Arts and Science. Classes take place at the Fort Garry campus.

Our program focuses on health promotion. Students gain an understanding of the determinants of optimum health and well-being and the actions and circumstances that maintain those conditions. Health and wellness are understood in the context of the individual, the community and society with a particular focus on Manitoba and its peoples. 

The BHSt program requires the completion of 120 credit hours of required and elective coursework; this includes a minimum of 18 credit hours of concentration electives. Students must declare at least one concentration.

Concentrations

• Health Policy, Planning and Evaluation
  • This concentration provides foundational knowledge related to health policy development and related evaluation, and programming services. This can be a potential route for individuals seeking careers in areas such as health policy analysis or program planning and evaluation coordination.
• Health Promotion and Education
  • This concentration would be a route through which students pursuing a career as a home economics teacher could obtain their ‘teachable subjects’ in family studies and nutrition. Students should consult with academic advisors in the Faculty of Education as additional training will be required.
  • Students who pursue this concentration can also explore future career opportunities as community health educators, health-related fundraisers, health and safety coordinators, or professional home economists (PHEc).
• Family Health
  • This concentration is suitable for students interested in family social science. It provides the educational background suitable for a future career as a community wellness worker, victim services worker, youth care worker and residential care manager.
     

The Geological Sciences or Earth Sciences are multidisciplinary sciences that apply principles from many different fields to deal with all aspects of the solid Earth and its interactions with the hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere and Solar System. Quantitative data is provided through fieldwork, laboratory analysis and theoretical modeling for understanding the physical, chemical and biological behaviour and characteristics of Earth materials – rocks, minerals, fossils, liquids and gases. Once the nature and extent of the Earth’s natural evolution is understood and quantified, as well as the more recent environmental impact of human activity, they can help tackle many resource extraction, mineral processing and environmental problems, and predict future changes to the Earth.

Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes. It is also the profession that applies the accumulated knowledge of this science to practical problems. Psychologists and their work can be classified into three general categories: Research Psychology, Applied Psychology, and Clinical/Counselling Psychology. Bachelor of Arts programs in psychology offer comprehensive training that will provide an essential foundation for pursuing careers within any of these three areas.

Physical Geography examines the natural and physical systems of the Earth including the atmosphere, biosphere, cryosphere (ice and snow), hydrosphere (water) and lithosphere (land surface). Physical geographers also look at the connections between these systems, how they change over time, and the implications of these changes. Atmospheric science covers topics such as climate change, storms (including tornadoes), weather systems and other atmospheric phenomena. Biogeography is the study of the biosphere, and examines the geographic nature of plants, animals, and ecosystems. Hydrology is the study of the Earth’s water in its many forms including ice, snow, rivers, lakes, and groundwater. Lastly, geomorphology examines the nature of the Earth’s land surface features such as mountains and river.

The Department of Icelandic Language and Literature seeks to offer innovative and challenging courses in Icelandic language, literature, films and aesthetics, as well as Icelandic history and culture at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The Department also recognizes its commitment to the Icelandic community in North America by actively promoting North American-Icelandic history and culture. It has served to highlight the cultural contribution of Icelandic-Canadians to North America, and the curriculum includes courses dealing exclusively with Icelandic-Canadian literature and the poetics of immigration.

Geography is a broad synthesizing discipline that studies humans and the Earth by focusing on the themes of place and space. Geography is therefore not an encyclopedic listing of capital cities, mountains and rivers, but rather an understanding of the causes, effects, implications, and importance of these and other features. As Geography is so broad, it is often studied as a number of separate but closely related sub-disciplines, notably physical geography and human geography, and also regional geography (Area Studies), topical geography and geographic techniques (Geomatics).

Chemistry is the science concerned with the properties of atoms and molecules, of which all matter is composed. Chemistry is important for all aspects of the material world - food production; the manufacture of medicines, textiles, and plastics; energy production; identifying environmental problems and remedies; and understanding the workings of living organisms. The Honours and cooperative work-study (co-op) programs provide experience in government, private sector and research laboratories.

The Diploma in Agriculture is a hands on two-year program which prepares students to manage a farm or work in an agricultural business. Courses cover everything from agricultural production to marketing and business management. Students will develop the communication and leadership skills needed to thrive in the industry whether in marketing and financial services, livestock and crop supply, crop management, agricultural merchandising, or managing a farm.

Co-op options
The Cooperative Education option integrates the student’s academic study with practical work experience in industry, government and the farming profession. Cooperative Education in the Diploma of Agriculture incorporates one summer work term after the first year of study.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts is designed to provide a balanced learning of theory and practice. Studio courses focus on the production of art and design, though studio practice, related theory, and the technical education necessary to become an educator, or a professional creative artist in fine art or applied fields.

All undergraduate students take first and second-year studios in experimental and foundation studies, followed by more intensive study in specific fine art and design disciplines beginning third year. Students graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and deep disciplinary knowledge along with strong critical thinking skills and the agility to problem solve and connect the dots across a wide range of fields.

The BFA Honours degree allows you to complete an additional year of study including electives, as well as self-directed studio work and research.
