General Information:-

Information Systems was established at UNB as a separate program in 2007. The BISys program is administered by the Faculty of Computer Science. The program educates professionals who apply information technology to solve problems within the business domain.

The BISys program is designed as a four-year program or five years if undertaken in conjunction with the Cooperative Education Program (Co-op) or Professional Experience Program (PEP). Students entering the program are strongly encouraged to participate in either Co-op or PEP, as it is widely recognized that the experience gained is a valuable component of an Information Systems background. A description of the Co-op and PEP programs are found in Section G Undergraduate Degrees in the Computer Science section.

NOTE: Admission to the Bachelor of Information Systems program has been suspended, effective September 2015. For further information, please contact the Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science. 

Biology is the science of life, and as a department we want to foster a fascination with the biological sciences, develop scientific literacy, and build a solid foundation for careers in biology and related professions. 

Contemporary biology asks many questions due to the vast scope of disciplines related to biological sciences, ranging from the smallest molecules and cellular components, to individual organisms such as microbes, plants and animals, to the larger environment, ecosystems and the biosphere. 

The Biology program is available as a four-year Bachelor of Science degree with majors and honours programs, or as a minor within range of interdepartmental programs.

Creative writing is available as an option within the English Honours or Majors program. Students in the Creative Writing program must complete the normal English major requirements with courses from relevant creative writing areas.

Bachelor of Arts
The Creative Writing program is available as a major, minor, double major or honours option as part of a Bachelor of Arts degree. Arts is a four-year degree that covers a broad range of subject areas concerned with the study of human beings and the evolution and nature of global societies, ideas, and institutions.

In your first two years of Arts, you will select courses in fields like humanities, languages, social sciences as well as science and business to provide you with a broad foundation for advanced study in your chosen subject area during the final two years.

An English degree helps you develop transferable, functional skills such as writing, critical thinking and communication that employers and most work situations require. Software engineering goes beyond programming.  It’s about developing, writing, testing, implementing, and maintaining software systems. It’s the foundation of all computer systems. In other words, our digital world depends on software engineering.

In UNB’s Software Engineering program, you’ll learn how to develop and maintain reliable, safe, affordable, and efficient software systems that satisfy customer requirements. You’ll also gain the skills and knowledge needed to work on large and expensive software systems that often have safety-critical applications.  

Software Engineering is a joint program in the Faculty of Computer Science and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The program is available as a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree. 

Why Software Engineering at UNB?
Our program is the only Software Engineering program in Atlantic Canada accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), and one of only 14 CEAB-accredited programs in Canada. The program is also accredited by the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS). Our small class sizes at UNB mean greater interaction between you, your instructors, and your peers.

The Faculty of Engineering offers a program leading to a Diploma in Technology Management and Entrepreneurship, administered by the Dr. J. Herbert Smith/ACOA Chair. The mission of the program is to provide undergraduate and continuing education students opportunities to experience the realities of entrepreneurship and management in technology-based businesses and to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in business. The Diploma program consists of three core courses and two electives, totalling 15 credit hours. In selecting courses, students will be advised to develop a curriculum that builds skills in three key areas: business management, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy.

Up to twelve credit hours of required courses for the TME diploma can be shared as credit towards a degree. Each department shall determine its own maximum allowable concurrent credit hours, which may be less than, but no greater than twelve credit hours. Students who intend to complete the diploma must obtain both department and TME program approval of the courses which will be applied towards the degree and the diploma.

Applicants are encouraged to apply to the program as early as their first year of study and begin by taking elective courses. A minimum of 80 credit hours completed, or permission of the TME program Chair, is required to enroll in TME core courses.  Applicants who are not full-time students may still apply for the TME Diploma (or enroll in one or more TME courses). These applicants may be requested to submit the following documents along with their TME Diploma Application:

The mysteries of number theory and the geometry of curved spaces: these are areas with important applications in data security, computer design and cosmology. For ages, through research both pure and applied, mathematicians have made invisible and unsung contributions to advancements in science and technology, and the importance of mathematical training is increasingly recognized by employers and governments around the world.

In numerous rankings of careers, a significant portion of the top careers are math-intensive, and a degree in Mathematics provides excellent training.  For instance, CareerCast annually ranks 200 careers according to environment, income, outlook, and stress, and Mathematician, Actuary, Statistician, Data Scientist, Information Security Analyst, and Computer Systems Analyst regularly rank in the top ten.

Two Options

Mathematics:The mathematics major degree is designed to prepare you with a career in industry, government or education. Mathematics students are urged to obtain some expertise in an area of application such as the physical sciences, computer science, engineering or business.

Statistics: The statistics major degree is designed to prepare you with a career in industry or government as well as to provide a background for graduate study. Statistics students are urged to obtain some expertise in an area of applications such as the physical sciences, forestry, or computer science.

• There are summer employment opportunities (e.g. NSERCs Undergraduate Student Research Awards) for upper-year students
• The Faculty of Science has a Co-op degree program

Data science for finance: this is the best way to describe our Master in Quantitative Investment Management (MQIM) program. This one-of-a-kind one-year graduate program will prepare you for a specialized career in quantitative investment management. The program equips graduates with the fundamentals of finance knowledge combined with analytic and programming skills, as well as professional development competencies demanded by the finance industry. 

Quantitative Investment Management integrates tools from finance, economics, applied mathematics, statistics and computer programming to address problems in derivative securities valuation, dynamic investment strategies and risk management. These skills are sought by investment and commercial banks, trading companies, hedge funds, insurance companies, corporate risk managers and regulatory agencies. 

After completing the MQIM you will be qualified for positions such as: 

• Analyst 
• Data Scientist
• Portfolio or risk manager/associate
• Quantitative analyst or developer
• Trading associate

You will be qualified to work for pension funds, hedge funds, investment consulting firms, investment and commercial banks, insurance companies, and regulatory agencies, as well as any company that hires data analysts. Quantitative investment skills are in high demand! 

Learning the French language provides a wealth of opportunities for your future career and ignites a passion for culture, creativity, and expression. The Department of French welcomes students who wish to learn and perfect the language as well as pursue their studies in literature and linguistics.

We offer a range of courses in French Canadian literature, cinema, and culture, with an emphasis on Acadian and Québécois writers, as well as other Francophone literatures (i.e. France, Belgium, etc.).

Our linguistics courses explore the various expressions across French Canada. We also emphasize the phenomenon of human communication and how language shapes experience.
