Chemistry is the study of the properties of the fundamental building blocks of matter, ranging in size from single hydrogen atoms to complex aggregates of biologically important species. Chemists prepare new compounds and study their composition and structure. This activity, coupled with studies of the way in which chemical reactions occur, allows theories on chemical bonding and reaction to be formulated.

Chemistry can provide the foundation for interesting careers in medicine and medical laboratory work. It can also lead to a career in pharmaceutical design and innovation, or genetic research. Chemistry provides the strong background needed to research and develop discoveries in countless real-world materials, from plastics to foodstuffs to modern materials used in housing, transportation, and computer technology.

The Chemistry program is available as a major, double major, minor or honours option as part of a four-year Bachelor of Science degree. The Faculty of Science is one of the university’s oldest faculties and was established when UNB was founded in 1785. Our faculty has an outstanding reputation, both nationally and internationally, and as a student you will be able to benefit from its stellar accomplishments in research and for its acclaimed graduate and nationally-accredited undergraduate degree programs. The impact of their research has led to four of our faculty members being placed in the world's top one per cent of chemists most cited in scientific papers.

The Classical Studies program is designed for students who wish to study the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome either as a secondary interest (e.g. a double major) or as preparation for entrance into further professional studies (architecture, education, journalism, law, library science, museum studies). 

Classical Studies offers students the option of studying the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome with only minimal or no language study.  It is a perfect fit for those who wish to develop their interest in and knowledge of Ancient Greece and Rome but who do not wish to continue their study of ancient societies into a career or post-graduate study.

Data science for finance: this is the best way to describe our Master in Quantitative Investment Management (MQIM) program. This one-of-a-kind one-year graduate program will prepare you for a specialized career in quantitative investment management. The program equips graduates with the fundamentals of finance knowledge combined with analytic and programming skills, as well as professional development competencies demanded by the finance industry. 

Quantitative Investment Management integrates tools from finance, economics, applied mathematics, statistics and computer programming to address problems in derivative securities valuation, dynamic investment strategies and risk management. These skills are sought by investment and commercial banks, trading companies, hedge funds, insurance companies, corporate risk managers and regulatory agencies. 

After completing the MQIM you will be qualified for positions such as: 

• Analyst

The Faculties of Arts and Science at UNB in Fredericton work together to offer a combined arts and science four-year degree program. The BAS is a joint degree in Arts and Science. The Faculty of Engineering offers a program leading to a Diploma in Technology Management and Entrepreneurship, administered by the Dr. J. Herbert Smith/ACOA Chair. The mission of the program is to provide undergraduate and continuing education students opportunities to experience the realities of entrepreneurship and management in technology-based businesses and to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in business. The Diploma program consists of three core courses and two electives, totalling 15 credit hours. In selecting courses, students will be advised to develop a curriculum that builds skills in three key areas: business management, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy.

Up to twelve credit hours of required courses for the TME diploma can be shared as credit towards a degree. Each department shall determine its own maximum allowable concurrent credit hours, which may be less than, but no greater than twelve credit hours. Students who intend to complete the diploma must obtain both department and TME program approval of the courses which will be applied towards the degree and the diploma.

Applicants are encouraged to apply to the program as early as their first year of study and begin by taking elective courses. A minimum of 80 credit hours completed, or permission of the TME program Chair, is required to enroll in TME core courses.  Applicants who are not full-time students may still apply for the TME Diploma (or enroll in one or more TME courses). Everything around us leaves an impression. In this way, spatial information exists in all aspects of human activity. In Geodesy and Geomatics, you’ll analyze data about the Earth’s surface to solve complex problems. This  specialized field of study is useful in many circumstances, including: fighting climate change, creating tsunami warning systems, urban planning, constructing pipelines, operating navigation systems, understanding public health, recreating crime scenes, and numerous other examples. 

The Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering program is available as a major or minor as part of a four-year Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree. The Faculty has been preparing graduates for success in their engineering careers since 1854, when UNB was the first university in Canada to introduce an engineering program.

UNB is one of only two certified Geomatics programs in the country. Our world-class education and research on the subject has resulted in a 100% employment rate for our students.

Our graduates have gone on to help design and build bridges, make cleaner fuels and next-generation wireless communications tools. Researchers in the Faculty are developing technologies to help improve satellite imagery used by Google Earth and the Canadian Department of National Defence. General Information:-

Students can choose between two programs: German and German Studies. "German" is the language stream and "German Studies" is the area studies. The Undergraduate Advisor of the German unit will assist students interested in German/German Studies to select the program best suited for them. 

GERMAN:-
The focus of this program is language acquisition, even though students will also take content courses offered in English. It is suited for students who are eager to express themselves in German and who enjoy learning languages. 

GERMAN STUDIES:-
The focus of this program is on a wide variety of perspectives related to all things German, even though students will take two introductory German courses to get elementary exposure to the German language.

PROGRAMS OF STUDY

Minor in German
Students wishing to Minor in German are required to successfully complete GER 1001, GER 1002, GER 2001, GER 2002, plus four other German courses (12 ch) at the third or fourth-year levels in German language, literature, culture or film, offered in the Department. Courses cross-listed must be taken as German credits. Students in Minors must obtain a grade of C or higher in all required German courses.

Major in German
Students majoring in German (single or double majors), are required to complete GER 3011 and GER 3022, plus 6 other courses (18ch), at the third-or fourth-year levels in German language, literature, culture or film, offered in the Department. Courses cross-listed must be taken as German credits. The total of required courses is 24 advanced-level ch in German. Students in Majors must obtain a grade of C or higher in all required German courses.

Honours and Joint Honours in German:-
Honours students must obtain a grade of B- or higher in all required German courses. 

A. Single Honours 

Students in Single Honours are required to complete GER 3011 and GER 3022, plus 10 other courses (30ch) at the third-or fourth year levels in German language, literature, culture or film, offered in Department. Courses cross-listed must be taken as German credits. The total of required courses is 36 advanced level ch in German.

B. Joint Honours

Students in joint honours are required to complete GER 3011 and GER 3022, plus 6 other courses (24ch) at the third- or fourth years level in German language, literature, culture or film, offered in the Department. Courses cross-listed must be taken as German credits. The total of required courses is 24 advanced-level ch in German.

Note: Students majoring or honouring in German are strongly encouraged to spend one academic year at a university in a German-speaking country, for example in the program "Canadian Year in Freiburg" preferably in their third or fourth year of study. Interested students should consult the undergraduate advisor for German before November 30 of the year prior to the time of departure.

Geological Engineers explore, protect, and responsibly develop the Earth’s water, mineral, and energy resources. They also ensure that engineering structures are designed for long-term stability and safety, taking geological conditions and hazards into account.

Why Geological Engineering at UNB?
UNB offers the only geological engineering program in Atlantic Canada. As a joint initiative from the Department of Earth Sciences and the Department of Civil Engineering, your degree will focus on one of the three specialized learning streams: geoenvironmental, geotechnical, and mineral resources. Small class sizes provide excellent access to mentorship and opportunities to participate in groundbreaking research. Additionally, the program takes advantage of New Brunswick’s incredible geological diversity to offer students hands-on training.

Hands-on learning
Students complete three field schools as part of their degree. They may also participate in two subsidized field trips to international destinations of outstanding geological significance. Students complete a design course in each year of their degree, culminating with a full-year team design project. Students may also enroll in the Engineering Co-op Program as part of their degree.
