Computer science isn't just about computers; it's about using computers to understand and solve large problems. Through a mix of theory and practical experience, you will learn the fundamentals of computer science, including how to design and build software, how to develop effective ways to solve problems, and how to create new and better ways of using computers. Software engineering goes beyond programming.  It’s about developing, writing, testing, implementing, and maintaining software systems. It’s the foundation of all computer systems. In other words, our digital world depends on software engineering.

In UNB’s Software Engineering program, you’ll learn how to develop and maintain reliable, safe, affordable, and efficient software systems that satisfy customer requirements. You’ll also gain the skills and knowledge needed to work on large and expensive software systems that often have safety-critical applications.  

Software Engineering is a joint program in the Faculty of Computer Science and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The program is available as a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree. 

Why Software Engineering at UNB?
Our program is the only Software Engineering program in Atlantic Canada accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), and one of only 14 CEAB-accredited programs in Canada. The program is also accredited by the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS). Our small class sizes at UNB mean greater interaction between you, your instructors, and your peers.

Mechanical engineers solve problems. They focus on making the world a better place by creating efficient, safe, and environmentally sound components and systems.

In UNB’s Mechanical Engineering program, you’ll learn to analyze, design, manufacture, and maintain mechanical systems. You’ll gain the skills you need to create and build mechanical devices such as spacecraft and artificial limbs, to design automation, medical tools, robotics, and ventilation systems, and to redesign existing mechanical systems and components to be more affordable and environmentally sound. 

Mechanical Engineering is available as a major in the Bachelor of Science in Engineering program.

The Faculties of Arts and Science at UNB in Fredericton work together to offer a combined arts and science four-year degree program. The BAS is a joint degree in Arts and Science. It provides you with an in-depth scientific education, as well as an understanding of people and the analytical and critical thinking skills acquired in an Arts degree.

Geological Engineers explore, protect, and responsibly develop the Earth’s water, mineral, and energy resources. They also ensure that engineering structures are designed for long-term stability and safety, taking geological conditions and hazards into account.

Why Geological Engineering at UNB?
UNB offers the only geological engineering program in Atlantic Canada. As a joint initiative from the Department of Earth Sciences and the Department of Civil Engineering, your degree will focus on one of the three specialized learning streams: geoenvironmental, geotechnical, and mineral resources. Small class sizes provide excellent access to mentorship and opportunities to participate in groundbreaking research. Additionally, the program takes advantage of New Brunswick’s incredible geological diversity to offer students hands-on training.

Hands-on learning
Students complete three field schools as part of their degree. They may also participate in two subsidized field trips to international destinations of outstanding geological significance. Students complete a design course in each year of their degree, culminating with a full-year team design project. Students may also enroll in the Engineering Co-op Program as part of their degree.

Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment which takes place in the private, municipal and federal sectors.

Civil engineers work on solving many of the largest problems facing the world today. They plan, design and build infrastructure essential to a modern society. From highways and pipelines to water treatment plants and energy-efficient buildings, civil engineers develop sustainable, safe and environmentally appropriate answers to basic human needs.

Psychology is the science of human thought, behaviour and emotion. All that we think, feel and do is a possible topic for psychological study. Psychology applies its knowledge to human activity in order to improve lives and alleviate suffering.

At UNB, we offer a broad spectrum of research areas in psychology, including: human sexuality, depression, feminist perspectives, Autism, women’s studies, internet and gambling addictions, gender and laterality, pain assessment and management, infant and adolescent development, cultural psychology, self-concept and identity, bilingualism and cognitive neuroscience.

Learning the French language provides a wealth of opportunities for your future career and ignites a passion for culture, creativity, and expression. The Department of French welcomes students who wish to learn and perfect the language as well as pursue their studies in literature and linguistics.

We offer a range of courses in French Canadian literature, cinema, and culture, with an emphasis on Acadian and Québécois writers, as well as other Francophone literatures (i.e. France, Belgium, etc.).

Our linguistics courses explore the various expressions across French Canada. We also emphasize the phenomenon of human communication and how language shapes experience.
