How does the brain work? How does the brain determine behavior? What happens when the brain is injured? Neuroscience is a sub-field of psychology that examines these questions and many others. 

Research in neuroscience is one of the fastest growing areas of psychology.  We now have new techniques to measure brain activity, such as neuroimaging, which gives us insight into the brain we’ve never had before. When you enroll in the Neuroscience specialization at UNB, you will stay at the cutting edge of psychology. 

The Neuroscience specialization is available as part of your major or honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. You can also get training in Neuroscience through the major or honours Bachelor of Science degree.

The mysteries of number theory and the geometry of curved spaces: these are areas with important applications in data security, computer design and cosmology. For ages, through research both pure and applied, mathematicians have made invisible and unsung contributions to advancements in science and technology, and the importance of mathematical training is increasingly recognized by employers and governments around the world.

In numerous rankings of careers, a significant portion of the top careers are math-intensive, and a degree in Mathematics provides excellent training.  For instance, CareerCast annually ranks 200 careers according to environment, income, outlook, and stress, and Mathematician, Actuary, Statistician, Data Scientist, Information Security Analyst, and Computer Systems Analyst regularly rank in the top ten.

Two Options

Mathematics:The mathematics major degree is designed to prepare you with a career in industry, government or education. Mathematics students are urged to obtain some expertise in an area of application such as the physical sciences, computer science, engineering or business.

Statistics: The statistics major degree is designed to prepare you with a career in industry or government as well as to provide a background for graduate study. Statistics students are urged to obtain some expertise in an area of applications such as the physical sciences, forestry, or computer science.

Hands-on learning

Additionally, you will analyze and deliberate over applications from UNB-led startups to recommend up to two real cash investments each year from the Fraser Student Venture Fund.

Computer science isn't just about computers; it's about using computers to understand and solve large problems. Combating climate change, finding cures for diseases, helping children learn - solving any of these issues can begin by studying computer science. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is part of almost everything you do from the car you drive to the movies you watch to the cell phone you use. It drives innovation in nearly every area of your life. Computing professionals are the creative people who are responsible for many of these innovations. That means career options in computer science are limited only by your imagination.

Through a mix of theory and practical experience, you will learn the fundamentals of computer science, including how to design and build software, how to develop effective ways to solve problems, and how to create new and better ways of using computers. UNB’s Adult Education program combines credit courses with academic research, applied projects, and continuing professional development workshops. Physics is the most fundamental natural science, It examines basic concepts such as energy, force, and spacetime, and all that derives from these, such as mass, charge, matter and its motion. More broadly, it is the general analysis of nature, conducted in order to understand how the world and universe behave.
Physicists want to really understand how the world works, in every detail and at the deepest level. Physicists study questions facing today’s science and technology and are at the forefront of solutions for instrumentation, measurement techniques, and model development in many areas.

Several recent national surveys have indicated that there is a shortage of physicists in almost all parts of Canada. This situation will become even more acute in the next decade, so physicists will continue to find good jobs.

The Physics program is available as a major, double major, minor or honours option as part of a four-year Bachelor of Science degree. The Faculty of Science is one of the university’s oldest faculties and was established when UNB was founded in 1785. Our faculty has an outstanding reputation, both nationally and internationally, and as a student you will be able to benefit from its stellar accomplishments in research and for its acclaimed graduate and nationally-accredited undergraduate degree programs. The impact of their research has led to four of our faculty members being placed in the world's top one per cent of chemists most cited in scientific papers.

UNB is home to some of the best and most up-to-date facilities in the country. We are one of only a few universities with an MRI and our chemistry labs are the best in the country. UNB students have access to the following facilities:

The Faculty of Engineering offers a program leading to a Diploma in Technology Management and Entrepreneurship, administered by the Dr. J. Herbert Smith/ACOA Chair. The mission of the program is to provide undergraduate and continuing education students opportunities to experience the realities of entrepreneurship and management in technology-based businesses and to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in business. The Diploma program consists of three core courses and two electives, totalling 15 credit hours. In selecting courses, students will be advised to develop a curriculum that builds skills in three key areas: business management, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy.

Up to twelve credit hours of required courses for the TME diploma can be shared as credit towards a degree. Each department shall determine its own maximum allowable concurrent credit hours, which may be less than, but no greater than twelve credit hours. Students who intend to complete the diploma must obtain both department and TME program approval of the courses which will be applied towards the degree and the diploma.

Applicants are encouraged to apply to the program as early as their first year of study and begin by taking elective courses. A minimum of 80 credit hours completed, or permission of the TME program Chair, is required to enroll in TME core courses.  Applicants who are not full-time students may still apply for the TME Diploma (or enroll in one or more TME courses). Sport and Recreation Management:
Combine the MBA with your interests in Sport and Recreation Management and prepare for a career in professional or amateur sports, not-for-profit organizations, a recreation facility, resort or park. 

Data science for finance: this is the best way to describe our Master in Quantitative Investment Management (MQIM) program. This one-of-a-kind one-year graduate program will prepare you for a specialized career in quantitative investment management. The program equips graduates with the fundamentals of finance knowledge combined with analytic and programming skills, as well as professional development competencies demanded by the finance industry. 

Quantitative Investment Management integrates tools from finance, economics, applied mathematics, statistics and computer programming to address problems in derivative securities valuation, dynamic investment strategies and risk management. These skills are sought by investment and commercial banks, trading companies, hedge funds, insurance companies, corporate risk managers and regulatory agencies. 

After completing the MQIM you will be qualified for positions such as: 

• Analyst 
• Data Scientist
• Portfolio or risk manager/associate
• Quantitative analyst or developer
• Trading associate

You will be qualified to work for pension funds, hedge funds, investment consulting firms, investment and commercial banks, insurance companies, and regulatory agencies, as well as any company that hires data analysts. Quantitative investment skills are in high demand!
