The Faculty of Science, Applied Science and Engineering is the home of the Chemistry department in Saint John and is located on the top floor of William F. Ganong Hall.

Chemistry is the study of atoms, molecules and their interactions. It is often described as the central science because studies in biology, geology and physics examine the gross behaviour of materials which is a reflection of what is occurring at the molecular level. 

Our principle teaching strategy is to work with small groups of students to maximize the personal experience and optimize skills development.

Civil engineers design, construct and maintain all types of buildings and transportation systems.

The University of New Brunswick is introducing a new two-year diploma in engineering foundations program, offered on its Saint John campus. Starting in September 2021, the diploma in engineering foundations will provide graduates with formal recognition upon completion of the two foundational years in engineering.

At UNB Saint John, you will get off to a great start while enjoying the benefits of our small campus and class sizes. Our diploma in engineering foundations gives you a strong base before transferring to our Fredericton campus or another university to complete your four-year degree program.

The two-year diploma program provides you with a basic understanding of scientific principles and a foundation in engineering, mathematics, design and technical communication. After a general program of study in your first year, you will focus on one of five engineering disciplines (Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, Software) in your second year.

The Mathematics program on the Saint John campus is available as a major and minor option as part of a Bachelor of Science degree as well as part of a Bachelor of Arts degree. Additionally, there is a major in Mathematics and Economics option as part of a Bachelor of Science degree and there is a Certificate in Mathematics for Education.

Radiological technologists are experts in the use of electromagnetic radiation, such as X-rays, for the diagnosis of injury and disease. Radiography is offered in collaboration with the Saint John Regional Hospital and The Moncton Hospital.

Just about every Canadian will benefit from the work and care of a radiological technologist at some point in their lives - whether it's for a sprain, broken ankle or an annual preventative care mammogram.

Radiological technologists use a variety of technologies such as:

• Radiography, the commonly used X-ray for the chest, bones, joints, spine and gastrointestinal system
• Mammography, for early detection of breast cancer
• Bone Mineral Densitometry for detection and follow up of osteoporosis
• Angiography, to examine the heart and vascular (veins and arteries) system
• Fluroscopy, real-time, moving images of internal structures
• Computed Tomography (CT) scanning used to obtain crosssectional virtual slices through anatomical structures and to create 3-dimensional reconstructions

Radiological technologists work directly with patients, providing a combination of technological expertise and personal one-on-one care. as a registered radiological technologist, you will:

• Assess a patient’s condition and obtain clinical history
• Determine technical parameters for production of images
• Conduct examinations within a hospital’s diagnostic imaging department, operating room, trauma room and critical care units
• Analyze images
• Collaborate with the medical team, including radiologists
• Provide education and information to the patient and their family

Geological engineers merge earth sciences with engineering principles to determine what lies underground. Working primarily in the mining and mineral extraction sectors, geological engineers oversee the stability and safety of mines and of drilling sites, particularly of oil and natural gas wells.

This includes:

• Stabilizing the site against landslides and other ecological disasters
• Protecting groundwater supplies from contamination
• Ensuring all work is conducted in an environmentally sustainable way

Software engineers fuse the creativity of software design with the discipline of engineering principles.

A relatively new field, software engineers perform a number of tasks including design, development (or construction), testing, maintenance, systems management and the adaptation of software to address regional and language differences, also known as software localization.

Software engineering is a fast-growing field with employment opportunities located in almost every sector and all over the world.

Statistics is the collection and interpretation of data. At the University of New Brunswick Saint John, you will learn to develop tools to predict behaviour and actions across a variety of sectors including government, business, science and academia.

In your first year you will be required to take introductory mathematics courses in calculus as well as two introductory courses in probability and statistics. In your upper years you will build upon this foundation with courses in probability analysis, design and sample surveying. You may declare your major or minor in statistics at the end of your second year.

A degree in statistics prepares you for a career in analyzing a variety of factors for many types of employers including government, business, education and academia.

Our graduates go on to become actuaries, forensic auditors, insurance underwriters, market research analysts, medical researchers, public opinion researchers, statisticians and systems operation analysts.

Mathematics puts our world in order. Arts students may major or minor in Mathematics, studying calculus, geometry, algebra, statistics and mathematical theory. Mathematics provides the framework for scientific theory in applied, natural and social sciences and the principles underlying economics and business studies.
