Health is not merely the absence of disease, but a state of physical, mental and social well-being. How do we promote the health and well-being of all members of society?
Society faces significant health challenges. Healthcare is the biggest ticket item in most provincial government budgets in Canada. Still, many people don’t get the care they need. They spend hours in emergency waiting rooms or months to get into an addiction treatment program. At the same time, the Canadian population is getting older. An increasing number are overweight and suffer from chronic diseases. This puts even more pressure on healthcare services.

The average life expectancy for an aboriginal male in Canada is ten years less than that of a non-aboriginal male. How can we explain this and what can be done to reduce health inequalities? Research shows that regular exercise can prevent many health problems, yet many people still don’t do it. Why not, and how can we get them to change their behaviour? In general, how do we build communities that enhance the health and well-being of all residents? 

If these questions interest you, the Health and Society major might be the program for you.

The Bachelor of Health is a 4-year interdisciplinary program focused on all aspects of health. Students develop the knowledge and the skills necessary for success in a variety of careers in the health sector. The program is also comprehensive preparation for further professional or graduate studies.  All students complete core courses covering the biological and social determinants of health, current health issues, health policy, the management of healthcare services, research methods, and data analysis.

In addition to the core Health courses taken each year, Health and Society Majors take a series of courses which further develop their knowledge and skills in health policy and policy analysis; their understanding of how income, education, place of residence and other social factors affect individual and population health; and their social science research and communications skills.

This is a unique interdisciplinary program providing students with a solid grounding in health and wellness in all its dimensions, healthcare systems, as well as in-depth training in their chosen major in healthcare management, biomedical sciences, or health policy and the social determinants of health. As they will in their careers, students work together in multidisciplinary teams addressing current health issues.

Hands-on learning
Bachelor of Health students experience a variety of work settings in the healthcare system and in the community through job-shadowing and internships. Beginning in their first year, students apply what they’ve learned in the classroom in practical lab experiences and community-based research assignments.

In the fourth year capstone course, students from all three majors come together to work in multidisciplinary teams to analyze and address a critical health issue identified in consultation with experts in the healthcare sector.

Information and Communication Studies (ICS) is online, interactive, and connected. Society is in the midst of a fundamental shift in how we communicate with each other, access information, and view popular culture.

As an ICS student on our Saint John campus, you will cast a critical eye on the impact of new technologies and processes on our social, political, economic, and cultural landscapes.

Topics include the decline of newspapers, radio, and television; the rise of Twitter, Facebook, and other social media; the impact of mobile computing; and the eternal question of ‘do we control our devices or do our devices determine who we are?’

Unlike many similar programs, which focus on one discipline’s perspective, our program is multidisciplinary. This means you’ll learn about complex topics from multiple fields of study and perspectives, including Sociology, Psychology, and History.

Mathematics puts our world in order. Arts students may major or minor in Mathematics, studying calculus, geometry, algebra, statistics and mathematical theory. Mathematics provides the framework for scientific theory in applied, natural and social sciences and the principles underlying economics and business studies.

Our BScEC program will introduce you to the function and roles of Canadian and global economies, and the tools economists use to analyze the decisions made by individuals and businesses. Our BScEC graduates are well-qualified for jobs in economics or finance, or the pursuit of graduate studies in either field.

Scientific research has made great advances in the past 20 years and at UNB Saint John you’ll have the opportunity to learn and experiment in small classes led by instructors passionate about science and the theoretical and practical knowledge it imparts.

The Faculty of Science, Applied Science and Engineering is the home of the Chemistry department in Saint John and is located on the top floor of William F. Ganong Hall.

Chemistry is the study of atoms, molecules and their interactions. It is often described as the central science because studies in biology, geology and physics examine the gross behaviour of materials which is a reflection of what is occurring at the molecular level. 

Our principle teaching strategy is to work with small groups of students to maximize the personal experience and optimize skills development.

From emergency care for premature babies with immature lungs, to ongoing treatment for people with chronic diseases such as cystic fibrosis, asthma and emphysema, respiratory therapists play an important role in lifelong health.

Respiratory therapists can be found throughout the health care system, such as:

• Air quality testing facilities

Open doors

• A respiratory therapy degree can also open doors around the world. Health care providers in developing countries actively recruit Canadian graduates to help develop health care facilities and programs abroad.
• Following completion of the BHS (Respiratory Therapy) students may pursue further training in the specialized treatment areas of perfusion technology, sleep medicine, neonatal or pediatric care and anaesthesia assistant.

Biology is the study of life. At UNB Saint John, Arts students can major in Biology, studying botany, ecology, zoology, organic chemistry and microbiology. You will be able to explore the world of environmental science, sustainable development and public policies towards land and water use.

In your first year you will take introductory studies in organic chemistry, ecology cells and organisms and biology lab work. In second year you will add botany, microbiology, zoology and statistics to your course work and at the end of the year you may apply to major in Biology. Upper-level studies in Biology may include conservation biology, environmental law and animal behaviour.

Your biology degree will teach you to analyze how living things work and interact with other organisms. You will learn to think critically and solve problems through observation and evaluation.

Anthropologists study humans: who we are, what we do, what we say, what we look like, and what we believe in.

At UNB, Anthropology is a holistic discipline, meaning you’ll examine humans, both past and present, as biological, cultural, and social beings. You’ll explore three central subfields – sociocultural anthropology, archeology, and biological anthropology – and you’ll have access to our expanded lab facility that includes a vast collection of human, hominid, and primate teaching specimens.

We use a range of learning styles and innovative teaching methods, and we incorporate findings from our research. Our small class sizes mean greater interaction between you, your instructors, and your peers.

Geological engineers merge earth sciences with engineering principles to determine what lies underground. Working primarily in the mining and mineral extraction sectors, geological engineers oversee the stability and safety of mines and of drilling sites, particularly of oil and natural gas wells.

This includes:

• Stabilizing the site against landslides and other ecological disasters
• Protecting groundwater supplies from contamination
• Ensuring all work is conducted in an environmentally sustainable way
