Good healthcare requires more than doctors and nurses. It involves managing large budgets, finding ways to reduce long wait times in emergency rooms, making sure there are adequate supplies of vaccines and other medicines available when they are needed, and recruiting, hiring and managing the workforce of a hospital, nursing home, or community health clinic. It also includes activities like overseeing the health and safety of employees at a manufacturing plant, planning effective public health education campaigns about the health risks of vaping, and connecting the manufacturers of new medical devices with the surgeons who will use them. 

What all of these activities have in common is that they require management skills: financial management; human resources management; strategic planning; marketing; understanding of how organizations function, and how they can work better. These skills are in high demand in New Brunswick and elsewhere.

The Bachelor of Health – Management in Health Major is a 4-year interdisciplinary program offering a solid training in management with a focus on the health sector. All Bachelor of Health students complete core courses covering the biological and social determinants of health, current health issues, health policy, the management of healthcare services, and data analysis.

In addition to the core Health courses taken each year, Management in Health majors take a series of required and elective courses which develop the business skills necessary in the operation of various types of organizations in the health sector. The program is also comprehensive preparation for further professional or graduate studies.

UNB Saint John offers one of the few Bachelor’s degrees in healthcare management in Canada. Our program provides students with a solid grounding in health and wellness in all its dimensions, as well as in-depth training in their chosen major in healthcare management.

Hands-on learning

Bachelor of Health students experience a variety of work settings in the healthcare system and in the community through job-shadowing and internships. 

In the fourth year capstone course, students from all three majors (Health and Society, Management in Health, and Biomedical Sciences and Health) come together to work in multidisciplinary teams to analyze and address a critical health issue identified in consultation with experts in the healthcare sector.

The Pre-MBA Program is full-time, intensive, non-credit program offered by Saint John College and UNB Saint John's Master of Business Administration program. It is designed to help international students bridge the gap between their undergraduate education, work experience and the entry requirements of UNB Saint John's MBA program.

The Pre-MBA program is designed for international students who have been conditionally accepted to the UNB Saint John MBA Program but who need to increase their level of English language ability and/or gain work experience.

Geological engineers merge earth sciences with engineering principles to determine what lies underground. Working primarily in the mining and mineral extraction sectors, geological engineers oversee the stability and safety of mines and of drilling sites, particularly of oil and natural gas wells.

This includes:

• Stabilizing the site against landslides and other ecological disasters
• Protecting groundwater supplies from contamination
• Ensuring all work is conducted in an environmentally sustainable way

Electrical engineers oversee the production, transmission and use of electricity.

That includes everything from managing large power grids that deliver electricity to designing microprocessors for computers and other electric devices.

With the many applications of electricity, the areas of specialization are wide-ranging:

• Power apparatus and systems
• Electronics and digital systems
• Computer networks and communications
• Eletromagnetics
• System dynamics and control

Environmental biology is an interdisciplinary science because the solutions to environmental problems lie at the intersection of human behaviour, technology and the biology of living organisms.

Environmental biology students at UNB Saint John will take courses in:

• Ecology
• Conservation biology
• Ecotoxicology

From emergency care for premature babies with immature lungs, to ongoing treatment for people with chronic diseases such as cystic fibrosis, asthma and emphysema, respiratory therapists play an important role in lifelong health.

Respiratory therapists can be found throughout the health care system, such as:

• Hospitals
• Rehabilitation centres
• Public health clinics
• Home care services
• Research labs within universities
• Private sector corporations
• Equipment and pharmaceutical sales
• Air quality testing facilities

Open doors

• A respiratory therapy degree can also open doors around the world. Health care providers in developing countries actively recruit Canadian graduates to help develop health care facilities and programs abroad.
• Following completion of the BHS (Respiratory Therapy) students may pursue further training in the specialized treatment areas of perfusion technology, sleep medicine, neonatal or pediatric care and anaesthesia assistant.

Linguistics courses offer insights into the relationship between the brain, mind and language. By studying linguistics, you’ll gain the skills and knowledge to understand foreign languages and the difficulties foreign students encounter in English and French. 

Linguistic courses complement programs in Education, English, Languages, Psychology, Philosophy, Social Science, and Computer Science. Linguistics is a requirement for Speech Therapy, TESL, and other programs related to language processing and language engineering.

This program provides students with a solid knowledge of basic concepts that form the foundation of linguistic theories including:

• The modules of grammar (phonology, syntax, semantics).
• The relationship between cognition and language (psycholinguistics).
• The relationship between brain and grammar (generative grammar.

Civil engineers design, construct and maintain all types of buildings and transportation systems.

That’s an extensive list that includes office towers, highways, airports, canals, bridges, industrial plants, water and sewage treatment systems, hydroelectric developments and irrigation systems.

Mathematics puts our world in order. Arts students may major or minor in Mathematics, studying calculus, geometry, algebra, statistics and mathematical theory. Mathematics provides the framework for scientific theory in applied, natural and social sciences and the principles underlying economics and business studies.

global technological evolution is underway and computer scientists are designing and implementing the computer systems that are the bedrock of the modern world.

The BScCS is a four-year degree program providing students with a solid foundation in core areas of computing recognized by the Canadian Information Processing Society. The program prepares students for a wide variety of careers in traditional and emerging fields in computing. Alongside core courses a targeted range of elective courses are offered through which students have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in specific areas of computing or in complementary disciplines.

Students may choose to specialize in one of the following disciplines: software engineering, or computer networking.
