Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) in Economics (Co-op Optional)

If it moves, a mechanical engineer designed it! Mechanical engineers are responsible for a wide range of mechanical, thermal and biomedical systems and devices, from computer parts to power plants, from manufacturing systems to spacecraft. This is a broad-based area of engineering, and graduates find work in almost every industrial sector, including high tech, aerospace, manufacturing, auto, energy, biomedical and consulting.

Upon completion of a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical engineering, a student who completes the requirements specified below for 30 extra units will be eligible for a BSc in Computing Technology, as a second degree. The remaining 132 units are from their engineering degree; students follow the engineering degree requirements and the computing technology degree requirements in parallel. It is not allowed to obtain the computing technology degree without also completing the corresponding engineering degree.

The School of Information Studies, located in the Faculty of Arts, offers a graduate diploma in Information Management and a Master of Information Studies (MIS).

The master's program offers three options to complete the units required for the MIS degree. The three options include a course-based option, a thesis option, and a co-op option. Please note that the co-op option is available to full time students only, and that there are a limited number of work placement spots available to SIS students each year. In all cases, a minimum of 25% of the courses must be completed in the second language.

Graduates of the MIS program are prepared to take on many exciting career opportunities as controlled vocabulary specialists, digital curators, information architects, knowledge management analysts, library directors, metadata managers, privacy analysts, records managers and web content managers, to name just a few.

The period known as the European Middle Ages has endowed the Western world with a rich architectural, musical, poetic, theological, literary and linguistic heritage. Our vision of the world has its origins in the Long Medieval period, so studying this era that starts at the end of Antiquity and reaches the Modern times introduces you to your past in all its dimensions: linguistic, cultural, historical, political, philosophical and religious. These multidisciplinary programs include courses in history, philosophy, music, theatre, English, French, Italian, and Latin literatures.

The Honours Bachelor of Science in Human Kinetics emphasizes the biophysical sciences of human kinetics, with a focus on the role that biological, anatomical, musculoskeletal, and neuro-motor systems have on motor performance, and the impact of sport and physical activity on the body. It provides the knowledge, skills and techniques required for you to play a leading role in developing and implementing evidence-based approaches that maintain and improve human movement, and lead to positive health outcomes for different populations in a variety of settings. While the program focuses on disciplines such as anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology, motor control and psychomotor behaviour, it also provides an understanding of how the social sciences contribute to human movement and performance. Students have the opportunity to do experiential education internships in a community venue, or do a research project supervised by faculty. This degree can lead to admission to graduate studies in human kinetics and advanced degrees in allied health and rehabilitation sciences such as physiotherapy and occupational therapy, medicine, or chiropractic studies. Potential additional certifications: College of Kinesiologists of Ontario (Registered Kinesiologist), Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Exercise Physiologist).

History
History is the discipline that focuses on the diverse and complex ways that individuals and groups have created and adjusted to change over thousands of years around the world. In studying change over time, history students learn to interpret evidence of human thought and behavior, in order to understand the impact of individual and collective decision-making, the changing relationships among people and societies, and between humans and their environment. 

Political Science
Politics is omnipresent in our lives. Political science seeks to describe, analyze, understand and assess the principles and power relations that govern social life. It revolves as much around the structures and institutions that define these relations and principles as around the ideas and practices that drive them. It studies everything that influences political life and institutions (ideologies, groups, social movements, etc.) on a local, regional, national and international scale.

Our programs offer in-depth training in political science and encourage critical reflection on pivotal issues like citizenship, identity, political participation, globalization and development, governance and the state, and ethics and democracy. A discipline open to many theoretical and methodological approaches, political science constantly exchanges and shares with other fields. At the University of Ottawa's School of Political Studies, you build your knowledge in four subfields of political science: political thought, Canadian and Quebec politics, comparative politics, and international relations and global politics.

Philosophy
Since it deals mainly with issues that have no simple solutions, philosophy emphasizes the exchange of ideas and debate, and thus cultivates an appetite for deep and serious reflection. By reading and discussing the works of the world's great thinkers on fundamental topics like truth, justice, morality and existence, you sharpen your own ability to think clearly, critically and independently. The Department's curriculum has a twin approach, historical and analytical, and covers political and social philosophy, ethics, philosophy of science, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind and logic. 

Political Science

Ever wonder why some countries are richer than others? Ever question why income inequality has been growing? Ever wonder why Canadian politicians worry when other countries may be going bankrupt? Economics can answer all these questions. 

Economics examines how individuals and society make choices in a world where resources are limited. It focuses on the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. Two important themes are efficiency (the absence of waste in the use of resources) and fairness. Since making choices is central to all human activities, studying economics often helps explain why people and governments behave in certain ways.

Anthropology involves studying the diversity of human societies through comparative analyses. Anthropologists develop tools that contribute to identifying and exploring a variety of social, cultural, political, economic, environmental and other important issues. Anthropology is unique among disciplines because of its methodological approach, which involves in-depth qualitative field work. Our specialized programs in social and cultural anthropology enable students to better understand and analyze cultural changes and intercultural relations in the context of globalization, development, migration and new technologies.

In the three-year Bachelor of Social Sciences program, students cover the fundamentals of the social sciences while studying three specific areas of their choice, including at least two from the following areas: anthropology, criminology, economics, political science, psychology, public administration, sociology and women’s studies. In addition, the Bachelor of Social Sciences is an excellent springboard to studies in law or education.

The Visual Arts Department offers a graduate program leading to the degree of Master of Arts in Contemporary Art Theory (MA).

The program is bilingual and is intended to develop research capability in various fields of contemporary art history and focus on graduating academics specializing in the areas of contemporary art, contemporary visual culture (cinema, television, internet) and visual theory. In accordance with University of Ottawa policy, students may choose to complete written assignments, examinations, and studio critiques in either English or French.
