Because of Sociology's broad areas of interest, a degree in sociology is an excellent preparation for a variety of careers, including further postgraduate studies in the social sciences (sociology, social work, education, law, criminology and law enforcement, international development). Sociology graduates have always been valuable players in both public and private sectors; their rich and multifaceted understanding of society, together with their skills in social analysis, communications and problem solving, make them in-demand in this constantly shifting social and economic world.

The Bachelor of Business in Tourism and Hospitality (BBTH) is a two-year post-diploma degree available only to graduates of diploma programs at the Atlantic Tourism and Hospitality Institute (ATHI) or of similar programs at similar post-secondary institutions. This post-diploma degree provides the opportunity for students to continue their education through a concentration in Business Administration.

Students must meet the UPEI admission requirements for this degree by completing the ATHI diploma, including economics, or equivalent course work at a university or college, with a minimum overall average of 70%. In the BBTH program, students must obtain grades of at least 60% in at least 12 of the 16 required business courses in order to qualify for the degree. Students are subject to all of the Academic Regulations of the University.

The Department of Modern Languages provides courses for several categories of students: for persons with little or no French, for those who have had French through high school, and for students who are fluent in French through residence, or through family, etc. A placement test must be taken prior to the beginning of classes to confirm the level at which these students should register.

In our modern complex and diverse world, the study of history has never been more relevant. Understanding the origins and developments of institutions and ideas, tensions and conflicts, societies and civilizations improves our social awareness and provides insight into the perspectives of others, allowing us to make informed decisions about future courses of action.

Studying history provides students with a tool box of transferable skills that will serve them well in today’s evolving job market. History students are trained to be excellent researchers, tracking down information and communicating their analysis with clarity and confidence. A History degree at UPEI will hone students’ abilities to weigh and assess evidence and expert opinion, to evaluate causes and consequences, and provide them with a foundation from which to develop practical solutions to contemporary problems. Our History graduates are pursuing successful careers in heritage and conservation, law, journalism, education, medicine, social services, policy analysis, business, communications, and digital information management.

The MBA in Global Leadership is a cohort-model MBA program that can be completed in 12 months. Students complete 14 courses as well as an MBA Skills Orientation Module at the beginning of the program. The cohort model enables students to progress through the applied program together as a community of learners, providing a strong support network for students to achieve their personal and academic goals.

The Minor in English is designed for those of you who want to enhance another major or wish to clear a space for literature and language studies in your lives. We also welcome anyone who wants to sample a course here and there, staying in touch with familiar writers and discovering new ones.

The Honours degree is for those who want to extend a thorough grounding in English language or literature by developing an area of independent study through a scholarly or creative writing Honours project.

A degree in Anthropology is a springboard for entry into a variety of professions. Our graduates have distinguished themselves in education, the legal and law enforcement professions, overseas development projects, large and small-scale corporations (including NGO's), museums, human resource departments, advertising and product research/development (some corporations even have their own anthropology units). The possibilities are endless.

Prince Edward Island was the first province in Canada to adopt baccalaureate education as the exclusive entry to nursing practice. This decision placed us at the forefront in the initiative across Canada to locate nursing education at the university level.

The Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program is intended for applicants with a university degree who wish to become professional nurses. Students in the Accelerated Program are required to take the same courses and have the same number of clinical hours as students in the four-year BScN program.

Since 1992, The Faculty of Nursing at the University of Prince Edward island has fostered an interactive academic environment that prepares nursing students to become critically reflective practitioners, advocates, educators, and professional leaders grounded in the principles of primary health care.

The curriculum of the Faculty of Nursing is based on the concepts and principles of Primary Health Care. Primary Health Care is defined by the World Health Organization (1978) as "essential health care made universally accessible to individuals and families in the community by means acceptable to them, through their full participation and at a cost that the community and country can afford." The purpose of the program is to prepare nurses to practice according to the concepts and principles of Primary Health Care.

In keeping with the basis of Primary Health Care, nurses collaborate with clients, other health care providers, and people from other sectors of society in promoting health. Nursing roles range from direct caregiver to formulator of healthy public policy and include advocate, leader, educator, researcher, and program developer.
