The Department of Sociology and Anthropology offers major/minor programs in Sociology (SOC), Anthropology (ANTH), and a Combined Major in Sociology/Anthropology (S/AN). We also offer honours programs for each major. Members of our internationally-recognized faculty possess a wealth of expertise acquired through study and research in a variety of countries and social settings. • Our graduates have also successfully entered a variety of post-graduate programs, including Masters study in sociology and anthropology, social work, education, law, international development, criminology, and law enforcement, to mention only a few.
• Because of Sociology's broad areas of interest, a degree in sociology is an excellent preparation for a variety of careers, including further postgraduate studies in the social sciences (sociology, social work, education, law, criminology and law enforcement, international development). Sociology graduates have always been valuable players in both public and private sectors; their rich and multifaceted understanding of society, together with their skills in social analysis, communications and problem solving, make them in-demand in this constantly shifting social and economic world.
• Similarly, a degree in Anthropology is a springboard for entry into a variety of professions. Our graduates have distinguished themselves in education, the legal and law enforcement professions, overseas development projects, large and small-scale corporations (including NGO's), museums, human resource departments, advertising and product research/development (some corporations even have their own anthropology units). The possibilities are endless.

Finance (specialization):
Management of financial resources is critical to the success and sustainability of both private and public organizations. An understanding of financial concepts, qualitative and quantitative problem-solving skills, and rational decision-making practices are important learning outcomes of the courses in the specialization in finance.

The courses in the specialization in finance focus on both corporate finance and personal finance with the intent of preparing the student for a career or further education related to finance.

The Co-op option is available to full-time students in any specialization within the Faculty of Business. Applications to the Co-op Education Program are normally made after completion of the first year of study. Students who successfully complete all the requirements of the program will have the notation entered on their transcripts and on the graduation parchment.

The School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences (SMCS) is built on a strong foundation of core Mathematics and Computer Science programs that have existed at UPEI for many years. The SMCS is unique in Atlantic Canada for offering a comprehensive suite of majors in the quantitative disciplines.

Mathematical and computational sciences are experiencing a “boom”, as many industries and sectors need people with the skills to manage, analyze, and extract useful information from data. This is what mathematicians, statisticians, and computer scientists are trained to do. Analytics (sometimes called “data science”) is at the intersection of mathematics, statistics, and computer science, and is the hottest area of job growth right now.

The MBA in Global Leadership is a cohort-model MBA program that can be completed in 12 months. Students complete 14 courses as well as an MBA Skills Orientation Module at the beginning of the program. The cohort model enables students to progress through the applied program together as a community of learners, providing a strong support network for students to achieve their personal and academic goals.

Organizational Management (specialization):

The leadership and management of organizations can promote or undermine organizational effectiveness, the well being of organizations’ members, and outcomes for other stakeholders. Management-related courses such as organizational behaviour, human resource management, and leadership and management skills are important components of the core BBA program.

The specialization in organizational management allows students to delve deeper into the broad, interdisciplinary domain of management and organizational studies by combining additional management courses with relevant courses in social science and liberal arts. Substantive issues relating to organizations as well as social and behavioural research methods are features designed to help students take an evidence-based approach to management.  This specialization promotes development of thoughtful, ethical, and productive members, managers, and leaders of organizations.

The Co-op option is available to full-time students in any specialization within the Faculty of Business. Applications to the Co-op Education Program are normally made after completion of the first year of study. Students who successfully complete all the requirements of the program will have the notation entered on their transcripts and on the graduation parchment.

The Accelerated Bachelor of Business Administration program is available to students who have a two-year diploma from Holland College (or a similar college) in Retail Management, Business, or Accounting.  They must satisfy general UPEI and School of Business entrance requirements. Applicants must demonstrate a minimum average of 70% in their college program.

The Master of Education program is designed to provide experienced educators in any field with the knowledge and skills required to become effective educational leaders. The overall aim of the program is to promote and support educational scholarship, research, and practice. Through studying relevant curriculum with researchers and expert practitioners, our students gain the capacity to make valuable contributions to the field of education—and to the lives of others.

It is also important to note that the Master of Education in Leadership and Learning is unique in that this one degree is structured to permit for a variety of study foci. You can choose a focus in either Global Perspectives, 21st Century Teaching and Learning, College Education, or Additional Designation in Inclusive Education. Students enrolled in the MEd program complete seven compulsory courses and three elective courses (pre-selected for the focus of your choice).

Global Perspectives Focus
This innovative course-based graduate program is designed for international students from a variety of countries. Participants bring a global perspective to leadership in learning in 21st century educational contexts. Participants will explore theory and practice from the fields of international and comparative education, educational leadership, curriculum and pedagogy, and global education. Students will enhance their competencies as educators and global citizens as they engage in active experiential learning and critical reflection.

The Major in English provides intensive study through reading, writing, and lively conversation. Explore the world through fiction, drama, film, poetry, non-fiction, and memoir. Enhance your ability to think about, understand, and interact with our increasingly complex society. Gain a richly diverse knowledge of how language and literature have been shaping, and continue to shape, human experience and culture.

The Minor in English is designed for those of you who want to enhance another major or wish to clear a space for literature and language studies in your lives. We also welcome anyone who wants to sample a course here and there, staying in touch with familiar writers and discovering new ones.

The Honours degree is for those who want to extend a thorough grounding in English language or literature by developing an area of independent study through a scholarly or creative writing Honours project.

The MVSc degree of the University of Prince Edward Island is a two-year, non-thesis (professional) Master’s-track program to enhance scholarship and competitiveness of veterinarians in one of the broad disciplines of pathology, microbiology, or clinical sciences.

The program is designed to provide advanced training in the disciplines, and to develop teaching and communication skills. In addition, a student successfully completing the program may spend an extra year of residency in their selected discipline so as to be eligible for certification by specialty groups that require three years of residency training.

Success in the program is attested by the achieving of satisfactory standings in the minimum number of graduate courses required, the completion of a research project, and the writing of a project report suitable for publication in a refereed journal.

Entrepreneurship (specialization):

The courses and experiences related to specializing in entrepreneurship provide students with the knowledge and the experiential learning to start up a business or manage one in an entrepreneurial manner. Students will study the various types of entrepreneurship including business, social, and innovation within existing organizations.

The key learning outcomes for students will be to gain knowledge, confidence, skills, and practice in both entrepreneurial thinking and leading entrepreneurial initiatives. They will think analytically, ask questions, research the market, solve problems, start a new venture, launch new products/services/ideas, and develop other entrepreneurial skills.
