Environmental Studies & Earth Sciences
Bachelor of Science in Environmental Geoscience
Increasingly, humans are inhabiting areas of both natural and human-made geological hazards. In order to prepare for and manage potential hazards, we need to know more about the natural geological processes that affect them. New generations will need to know more about the earth to make the best decisions for humans’ well-being.
Geology emphasizes solid earth science and applications in mineral and oil and gas resources. It can be divided into two areas of concentrations:
Environmental geoscience focuses on applications in environmental studies.
Our programs have a well-rounded curriculum that promotes a solid understanding of the fundamentals of the earth sciences across all sub-disciplines, combined with extensive hands-on training, field-oriented class exercises, regular use of the Saskatchewan Geological Survey’s subsurface core repository, and two intensive field school courses. Our programs have an established reputation for training highly qualified graduates.
What is Geology and Environmental Geoscience?
Geology is the study of the processes and physical structure of the earth. Environmental Geoscience is the study of the geological and geographic composition of the environment and the forces that shape the earth.
The U of R’s geology and environmental geoscience programs are highly relevant to today’s world, where human societies require more and more mineral resources and energy sources from the earth. At the same time, environmental issues, including climate change, resource depletion, scarcity, and pollution are increasingly constraining sustainable economic development and affecting our living environment.

The Department currently offers three routes for the MA in English: course-based, Creative Writing, and thesis-based. The course MA (ten courses) provides an opportunity to achieve a breadth of knowledge in many areas of English literature. The thesis MA (five courses plus thesis) provides an opportunity to do in-depth research, and an extended piece of writing, on one area of English literature. The Master's degree is normally the highest offered in the Department of English at the University of Regina, and affords the Department the opportunity for close support of Master’s students and high-priority supervision of Master's theses Both the thesis and course MA offer students excellent preparation for graduate studies at the doctoral level, or for jobs and careers in English. Bachelor of Science in Geography and Environmental Studies
Geography and environmental studies differ from other subjects due to their emphasis on space, place, and how humans connect and interact with their environment. Major global challenges of our time, such as climate change, depletion of natural resources, water availability, migration, war and conflict are better understood and addressed by those who have an in-depth knowledge of geography and environmental studies. The subject is diverse and is based on both natural science and social studies.
What is Geography and Environmental Studies?
Geography and Environmental Studies encompasses three areas:
Human geography analyses the way humans use and understand the world and addresses the spatial differentiation and organization of human activity and its interrelationships with the physical environment.
Physical geography—a component of Earth sciences—is the study of the natural processes that occur at and above the surface of the Earth.
Geography is one of mankind’s earliest scientific disciplines and studies the environment – everything that surrounds us, including human beings.
Environmental Studies encompasses the study of the planet and its intricate variety of living and non-living elements and processes, how human beings connect with the physical structures, institutions and economies we build, and the politics, language and culture by which we communicate.
