This concentration within the Bachelor of Arts, Media, Art and Performance Major, is designed for students interested in curatorial work. Students take specific Art History courses as well as selected Media, Art, and Performance courses. This program was developed to meet the demand of students and graduates for more training in this area.

The Department of Music’s MMus and MA degrees can lead to career opportunities in performance, education, library science, music publishing, media, and arts administration, among others. It also provides exciting potential for further studies at the doctoral level. Our programs promote study in areas as traditional or contemporary as you are, with individualized instruction, and excellent performance and rehearsal facilities. There is also ample opportunity to explore interdisciplinary studies with the other Media, Art, and Performance areas.

Master of Music (MMus) in Conducting
This 30 credit hour program offers intensive individualized studies in conducting for wind ensemble, orchestra, or choir. Students undertake a wide range of conducting projects and score study. The program culminates with a concert in which the student conducts a major work for large ensemble. All students also take graduate courses in critical theory in the fine arts, and in research techniques specific to music. This degree is an excellent choice for anyone interested in enhancing their conducting skills, including high school teachers who wish to gain extra qualifications.

The Department is engaged in a broad range of research in pure and applied mathematics and statistics, and offers programs leading to the MSc, and PhD degrees in mathematics or statistics. The MSc degrees normally requires two years of study, and students may chose either a course-based option or a thesis option for the research component of the degree.

The PhD program is an advanced, research-oriented course of study for which an original contribution to knowledge in the form of a dissertation is to be written and defended. The PhD program involves course work, comprehensive examinations, seminars, original research, and the defence of the dissertation.

Master of Music (MMus) in Performance (Voice)
This 30 credit hour program offers advanced studies in the above areas of specialization, as well as directed studies in the repertoire of the student’s instrument. Students study solo repertoire, participate in chamber ensembles, and undertake leadership roles in the ensemble most relevant to them (orchestra, concert band, wind ensemble, concert choir, or chamber choir). This program includes the performance of two full-length recitals. All students also take graduate courses in critical theory in the fine arts, and in research techniques specific to music. Graduate students in Performance participate in workshops with internationally renowned guest artists and are encouraged to perform in competitions at the national and international levels.

Process Systems Engineering (PSEng) is a broad category of engineering that deals with the process design for the purpose of converting raw goods to usable end products, including energy. Process engineering looks at the entire process from Point A, which is a raw material, to Point Z, which is the desired end product. It does not necessarily deal with acquiring the raw base material, although knowledge of its acquisition is part of the U of R’s systems approach to teaching and research.

The professional Master's option in Journalism is a 30 credit program to be completed over three semesters. It is not an academic track degree; rather it is designed to develop students' capacity for advanced journalistic investigation. Candidates will take a suite of core courses in the theory, history and methods of journalism as well as two advanced specialization options (in print, magazine, broadcast, documentary, international media, alternative media or photojournalism). An outside elective will draw on the resources of other departments and programs and will be related to students' professional capstone projects. In lieu of a thesis, their professional Master’s project will be completed under the supervision of an assigned faculty member. Long-form journalism proposals may include a film or radio documentary; a creative non-fiction or investigative series for magazine, newspaper or online publication; a publisher-ready book proposal and first chapter; a photo-journalism exhibit; or a community-based media project. Students will follow a rigorous and methodical process of research planning and investigation to produce journalism of publication / broadcast quality. Proposals must meaningfully advance the public interest.  Students will also participate in a Master's workshop, as they move from the conceptualization and investigation phases to the project production phase. The purpose of this MA program is to give graduate students in English the opportunity to complete an MA that has a creative writing emphasis and requires the submission of an extended creative work. At the same time, it will be a degree that requires a substantial amount of work within the field of English, which we also see a valuable part of the education of creative writers. It is hoped that the degree will be the foundation for careers in creative writing and editing. It is aimed at students who have aspirations in this field but have not had the rather more extensive professional experience involved with gaining admission to an M.F.A. degree.

The film and video studies program results in a liberal arts degree where you will focus on media studies while developing skills in critical thinking, analysis, problem solving, decision making and communication. You will also develop transdisciplinary knowledge and a strong awareness of culture.

This is a 30 credit hour (10 courses) diploma offered by Faculty of Media, Art, & Performance. It will enable students with no previous film training to gain a diploma in film production within one year.

Students will take courses in narrative modes of film production, technical aspects and media theory. The admission requirements are the same as those for the Faculty of MAP, but students must also have either a Bachelor's degree in a field other than Film Production, or 90 credit hours in any other discipline.
