Health Studies

• This program examines the issue of health and wellness, including mental health, from a variety of perspectives including how biological, cultural, social, and environmental contexts influence the health and well-being of the individual.

What you will learn

• You will learn about issues of health ranging from biological, psychological, cultural and environmental and how factors such as genetics, personality, attitudes and abilities influence healthy social and emotional development throughout the life span. You will study the role of cultural and community processes in health and healing and examine how groups interact with their environment in healthy and unhealthy ways.

Advance knowledge and understanding of human diversity and adaptation — past, present, and future — while seeking answers to the most vexing issues and problems affecting our species and our planet

What you will learn
Anthropology is the comprehensive study of human beings, past and present, in comparative, cross-cultural, and holistic light. Archaeology is a sub-discipline of Anthropology that focuses on the study of artifacts and other physical remains of past peoples in order to explore adaptation and cultural diversity over time. The Archaeology and Anthropology program at the University of Saskatchewan offers training that emphasizes the role of culture in past and present human behaviour and diversity, and that exposes students to human evolutionary, environmental, and social development and adaptation. The program demonstrates particular expertise in medical anthropology, environmental anthropology, applied (practicing) anthropology, anthropological archaeology, environmental archaeology, and bioarchaeology. We emphasize community-based and engaged learning, a commitment to reconciliation, and a broad disciplinary foundation in both anthropology and archaeology.

Biomedical foundations provides students with a strong foundation of multidisciplinary training in biomedical science while providing flexibility for initial specialization within a particular biomedical science.

What you will learn
This program includes necessary courses to prepare you for entry into health-related professional schools not requiring a four-year degree, such as dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy. You will also learn essential skills for careers in broad aspects of biotechnology, as well as employment in academic/research institutions and related industries.
 

Through innovative programming, integrated on-campus and field study opportunities, and the support of experienced and caring faculty, you will be prepared to succeed from the first day of classes through to graduation.

What you will learn
The Bachelor of Education program is designed for future educators wanting to teach students in a variety of educational institutions, including K to 12 schools. You will specialize in two teaching areas to concentrate your expertise in specific subjects.

Program options
The Bachelor of Education degree is offered by the College of Education. You have two options when completing this program:

• Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) - Secondary Program

Secondary
If you want to teach students in Grades 9 through 12, choose the Secondary level. You will specialize in two teaching areas to concentrate your expertise in specific high school subjects.

Discover unique traces of life from millions of years ago and follow the evolution of species from the depths of geologic time.

What you will learn
Your studies will focus on the fossil record of ancient organisms and their living descendants. You will learn to analyse the distribution and function of fossil animals and plants, reconstructing their evolutionary paths. Such evolutionary relationships are then tied to environmental data to reconstruct  the fossil species way of life. You will learn about human, plant and animal diversity, morphology and history.

The Bachelor of Commerce (B.Comm.) degree is a four-year program offered by the University of Saskatchewan's Edwards School of Business.
All undergraduate students admitted to the Edwards School of Business are required to complete a common first-year of studies. In January of your second year, you'll apply to a specialization in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Management, Marketing or Supply Chain Management.

Finance
Finance is the science of funds management, with a focus on saving, lending, and investing money. The field of finance deals with the concepts of time, money, and risk, and how they are interrelated.

What you will learn
The Finance major is well positioned to provide students with specialized financial knowledge and the necessary management skills to be competent financial managers. Learn how people should invest their money and how companies will perform in the future based on the past.

Finance students will understand the areas of finance theory, corporate, securities, risk, insurance, venture capital, planning, modeling, investments and portfolio management. Trained to compete and succeed in the financial marketplace.

With an industry worth more than $95 billion annually in Canada alone, agribusiness is big business. It is a business of local and global importance, encompassing a huge range of activities that contribute to our supply of food and natural fibres.

Agribusiness comes into play at every stage in the food chain, from primary production to the packaging of your favourite snack food. It is also a dynamic business that must respond to advances in technology, changes in trade and policy and to an ever-changing, consumer-driven marketplace.

What you will learn
You will learn about business management, economics, marketing, finance and sales, as well as the legal and institutional environment that characterize agribusiness. You will study the structure and organization of the agri-food sector and develop business skills relevant to farm input, on-farm businesses, processing, transportation, credit and marketing.

Human Resources
Human Resources is about helping organizations succeed by managing employees and helping them reach their full potential. It serves a strategic function linking talented people with organizational success.

The major prepares students to handle human resource concerns in a timely and professional manner relating to all HR competencies including strategy, professional practice, engagement, total rewards, labour and employee relations, health, wellness and safe workplace, learning and development, workforce planning and talent management, HR metrics, reporting and financial management.

What you will learn
The human resource major prepares you for all aspects of the employment relationship. You will learn to how to recruit, select and engage employees, how to set up a compensation system, and how to deal with the intricacies of employment law including union-management relations. As part of managing people, you will also learn about specific areas such as workforce planning, retention, training and development, and health and safety.

Archaeology is the study of artifacts and other physical remains of earlier societies and communities in order to unravel the mysteries of human cultural diversity and adaptation. Archaeologists can reconstruct past human behaviours and life ways from tools, shelters, ornaments, food remnants, modified landscapes, and even human remains.

What you will learn
The program focuses on the past peoples of western Canada and the broader Circumpolar North. You will have the opportunity to participate in the excavation of archaeological sites and will learn how to employ a wide variety of laboratory techniques. These include the analyses of artifacts and other archaeological materials such as human and non-human skeletal remains. You will learn how people interacted with past environments and how sociocultural explanations relevant to past human experiences are developed and tested. In sum, you will learn about how and why human behaviour has changed in the past in order to better understand human behavioural changes today and into the future.

Physics is the study of matter and energy and how they interact. Physics helps us understand how the world, and everything in it, really works. Physicists study all aspects of nature—from the study of subatomic particles to the study of astronomical objects many times larger than the sun.

What you will learn
You will discover the particles that make up the universe and the forces with which they interact. You will learn about black holes, atmospheric phenomena, new materials, quarks and gluons. You will investigate such phenomena as the big bang, quantum mechanical paradoxes and superconductivities. You will experiment using telescopes, satellites, radar, tokamaks, synchrotron and particle accelerators, and conduct space weather observations and atmospheric ozone monitoring.
