Sustainable use of our land, water and plant resources is increasingly recognized as a key societal goal. Resource Science provides essential skills and knowledge in applied sciences and resource management which can be used to influence sustainable development such as rejuvenating disturbed land or reducing greenhouse gas emissions from landscapes.

What you will learn
The Resource Science specialization provides you with hands-on, practical experience in field measurement and assessment. You will learn about:

• Environmental site assessment and soil landscape relationships
• In-field understanding of the spatial relationships of ecosites and soil units
• Remediation and reclamation practices
• Analysis and aggregation of field data
• Application of ecological land classification

Geological engineers connect the worlds of nature and engineering. They apply engineering principles to the natural materials and fluids found in the earth, including rocks, soils, groundwater, petroleum and natural gas.

What you will learn

• We’ve redesigned first-year engineering at USask to help you succeed and make engineering more fun. We call the new first year RE-ENGINEERED. It’s the only program of its kind in Canada. It will get you excited and inspired about engineering.
• In RE-ENGINEERED, instead of high-stakes exams, you will do more assignments and quizzes so you can improve your mark if you stumble early. Daily tutorials are part of the schedule so you can get help when you need it. And instead of final exams, you will explore the different branches of engineering in hands-on courses.
• You will choose your engineering specialty – known as your major, or discipline – at the end of your first year. This is the area you will study in-depth in your upper-years classes.

Planners balance science, aesthetics and community interests in the planning of healthy urban, rural and regional communities and environments. They work with community members, developers and elected officials to create places that optimize the use or preservation of society’s environmental, economic, social, cultural aesthetic, and infrastructure assets.

What you will learn
You will learn about the challenges of managing urbanization in a variety of contexts and about the latest innovations in planning policy and design. Some of the topics you’ll study include: land-use planning that integrates modern technologies, active transportation and transportation infrastructure, climate change solutions, energy conservation, protecting water supplies, and caring for natural areas. You will learn about community engagement, policy analysis and government processes, economics, planning and development law, geomatics, and conflict resolution.

Statistics is the science of learning from data. Statisticians can analyze and draw practical conclusions from data and provide crucial guidance in determining what information is reliable and which predictions can be trusted. Many economic, social, political, and military decisions cannot be made without statistical techniques.

What you will learn
You will study principles of experimental design and methods for data collection, analysis and interpretation.

Environment and Society focuses on the interplay between humans and their environment including complex issues such as climate change, population growth, pollution, and management of natural resources faced by our modern society.

What you will learn
You will take courses in a diverse range of topics including the following: hydrology, climatology, vegetation, geomorphology, public policy, political studies, history, philosophy, and statistics. Through exposure to science, social science, and humanities perspectives related to the environment, you will develop an understanding of environmental science, resource management, environmental philosophy, policy, and environmental studies.

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) program, accredited by the Canadian Association of Programs in Public Administration (CAPPA), is designed to prepare students for careers in public administration and policy work in diverse areas such as non-government organizations, industry associations, and, of course, the public service. MPA students are exposed to core concepts in policy formation and analysis, and have the opportunity to explore substantive areas such as social policy, health policy, innovation policy, trade and immigration policy, resource and environmental policy, and public sector management. 

The standard time in the program for the MPA is two years. However, the MPA can be completed in a period as short as 16 months (via an accelerated program) and as long as five years (the maximum time allowed in program for Masters students).

Cellular, physiological and pharmacological sciences is the study of the structure, function and development of organisms at the molecular, subcellular, cellular, tissue and organ levels. It investigates the functions and mechanisms of major systems of the human body and studies the effects and mode of action of drugs which modify major body systems.

What you will learn
You will study human anatomy, cell biology, neurobiology, skeletal biology, embryonic development, histology, and anatomical imaging. You will also study the properties of chemical compounds in relation to their interactions with living organisms and examine the basis for the discovery and study of drug actions either as therapeutic agents or as tools in physiological research. These fields can be used to advance medical science with clinical relevance to osteoarthritis, Alzheimer's disease, peripheral nerve damage and repair, multiple sclerosis, aging, cancer and pain.

Political Studies examines the use and abuse of power in societal struggles for justice, equality, freedom, and the common good. It deals with issues, at the local, national and international levels, relating to government and governance, authority and legitimacy, equity and resource distribution, rights and responsibilities, and peace and conflict.

What you will learn
You will learn about the forces and factors that influence the process of political decision-making, including ideologies, political parties, political leadership, civil society, elections, and the media. You will also gain an understanding about threats to global stability including poverty, environmental degradation, human rights violations, and migration and refugees, amongst other topics of contemporary national and international significance.

Crop scientists contribute to global food security by increasing local and global food production, developing new crop varieties, and protecting plants from disease and environmental stresses. Discover alternatives to traditional cropping systems and learn to improve the quality and nutrition of crops that feed the world.

Crop Science is the study of agricultural issues and challenges, including:

Crop Science integrates a broad range of disciplines, including genetics, pathology, crop quality and biotechnology, leading to the development of superior varieties of horticulture and field crops.

Kinesiology is the scientific study of the body in movement. It involves the understanding of how and why people move and the factors that limit and enhance our capacity for movement.

Kinesiology at the University of Saskatchewan takes a holistic approach, covering many areas of study, such as exercise physiology, gross anatomy, biomechanics, motor learning and control, growth and development, psychology and ethics.
