Social science is the scientific study of human society and human relationships. Explore political turmoil, environmental change, social inequality and other things that affect people's lives in profound ways.

Studying the social sciences gives you the inspiration to imagine new futures. It will also give you the skills needed to address society's most pressing challenges.

Apply to UVic as an Area Undecided student if you're interested in social sciences, but aren't ready to pick a program. You can use your first year to decide on a direction for your studies and have flexibility in what classes you can take, then declare your program when you're ready.

Interested in the earth, oceans and atmosphere? Curious about geohazards or climate change? On the south end of Vancouver Island, UVic is perfectly situated for offering a complete education in Earth System Science.

You'll experience hands-on learning in the field. From lab classes identifying rocks at the beach to field schools studying the geology of the Cordilleran Mountains, the great outdoors will be your classroom.

Learn about pressing local and global social-justice issues. Gender Studies courses encourage you to examine how gender, in relation to other categories of difference (race, class, sexuality, ability, age, and citizenship, etc.), shapes people’s lives, experiences, knowledge and possibilities. You’ll acquire a unique perspective on the world and your place in it.

What do Friedrich Nietzsche, the Brothers Grimm and Nosferatu have in common? They all have Germanic roots. Germanic studies lets you build language proficiency, explore new cultures and worldviews and even study or work in a German-speaking country. You’ll explore topics including German language, Germanic cultural studies, Holocaust education and memorialization, and multimedia and film studies.
