It’s a great pathway for a number of careers in fields involved in education policy or strategic development, or for further study to become a teacher. Because this major is part of the Bachelor of Arts, it’s easy to combine it with many other aspects of society and culture. Choose from majors in areas as diverse as education, social sciences, psychology, international studies, Maori development, event management or languages.

You can build your degree in a way that suits you study either one or two majors, select from a wide range of minors or perhaps add elective courses from another area of study.

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) is for students with an undergraduate degree in applied mathematics, computer science or science.

At the heart of the programme is the honours dissertation; an independent small-scale research project on a scientific topic. We have strong links with key industry organisations, and many students complete their research project in collaboration with an industry partner. courses in the Bachelor of Science (Honours) focus on the latest developments in applied mathematics, computer science and science.

With the Creative Writing major you develop your creative writing skills for the page, screen and spaces in-between.

Explore style and genre, media, and the demands of readers, editors and publishers. You develop your skills as a writer, testing your creative ideas in an environment that challenges, critiques and supports you as you go.

Develop specialist skills in a chosen field of medical laboratory science, demonstrate your analytical and problem-solving skills and learn to apply contemporary theory to current practice.

The ability to carry out research in medical laboratory science is a skill in high demand by industry. Medical laboratory scientists are facing new challenges as technologies evolve and diagnostic services change. Top-level evaluative and management skills are in demand along with specialised skills in research and development. The Master of Medical Laboratory Science equips you with the skills to make the most of these opportunities.

With the Mechatronics Engineering major in the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) you develop professional skills in several engineering disciplines, including complex technical, business and project management techniques.

Mechatronics engineers design and develop smart products and processes. They use principles of mechanical, electrical and electronics engineering, and computer science to create solutions and systems that are effective and viable. The Mechatronics Engineering major covers engineering fundamentals as well as human-centred design and systems thinking.

Advertising is about thinking laterally and developing effective brand and product campaigns. You start with a blank piece of course, do the hard work to get to a great idea and then choose various media to create a campaign. AUT is the only New Zealand university that teaches advertising creativity specifically and at degree level.

We work closely with the advertising industry, and you learn from guest speakers from leading advertising agencies and client companies like Google, TVNZ, Spark, MediaWorks, Saatchi & Saatchi, DDB, Colenso BBDO, FCB New Zealand and Film Construction.

Clients and agencies brief our students directly, and your completed ads may even be published in the media. Many students are also offered workplace experience at major advertising agencies. By the end of your degree you’ll have a professional portfolio to apply for work as a copywriter, art director and other roles in an ad agency.

The Microbiology major prepares you for careers in this interesting and dynamic field.

Microbiology is the study of living organisms and infectious agents that can’t be seen by the naked eye. You explore the role of microorganisms across many areas – human health, industry, agriculture and the environment.

You develop the skills for careers in a wide variety of settings in industry, research or government organisations. Graduates of the Microbiology major could also be involved with the industries that produce antibiotics, foods and drinks, or alternative fuels.

The Master of Science (Research) is a great opportunity to gain advanced research skills and explore an area within science through the one-year research thesis.

You study in a friendly, professional environment and can choose the generic Master of Science (Research) or select one of: Applied Conservation, Biomedical Science, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Food Science, Geospatial Science, Marine Science, Microbiology and Molecular Genetics.

With the Master of Sport, Exercise and Health you can advance your knowledge of the sport industry, and be involved in world-leading research in sport, exercise and health.

You can specialise in coach and athlete development, outdoor learning, physical activity and nutrition, sport leadership and management, or strength and conditioning.
