Our British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) accredited lab allows you to secure real-world experience and employability skills, working across a number of performance sport settings.Our flexible MSc in Sport and Exercise Science course means that you'll work in your specific interest area from day one, focusing your learning and research to become a specialist on your chosen theme.You'll use a range of advanced techniques throughout all of your modules, including creating online tools, practical experiments, auditing and planning to create and analyse real-world data.
Continually engaging with contemporary and future issues within sport and exercise science, including legal and ethical problemsolving, you'll critically consider your long-term career goals and plan for your future.Depending on your research focus, you'll develop a range of practical skills by using our specialist equipment, which includes 3D motion analysis system, breath-by-breath oxygen kinetics, near Infra-red spectroscopy, GPS in-match/motion tracking software, eye tracking glasses, force plates, thoracic impedance, and blood chemistry.
Because some of our module content is delivered online, you'll have time to either continue working in the field of sport and exercise science or take advantage of the internships and industry connections we have to increase your skills while you study. Explore the causes of crime, the effectiveness of punishment, and how crime and victimisation are represented in the media.
In doing so, you’ll challenge your existing opinions. You’ll also develop skills in evaluating contrasting evidence, critical thinking and crafting arguments by learning how sociologists, psychologists, political theorists and law experts approach crime and complex social problems.
Our BA (Hons) Criminology course places value on hands-on learning. We learn through case studies, the latest research and interactive sessions. There may be field trips to courts, prisons and sites such as Auschwitz.

Our Sport and Exercise Therapy degree course will give you the skills to work with a range of individuals, using evidence-based practice to bring them back to optimal levels of fitness and performance.
You're likely to find yourself working pitch-side, dealing with a range of emergencies, behind the scenes, helping athletes recover from injury and also advising on how to train for optimum performance.
But there are opportunities outside of professional sport too. Our course recognises broader concerns about low levels of physical activity, leading to poor health and an increased susceptibility to injury. We are all living longer, and with that, we need professionals to help support an increasing range of ages and not always working in the sports environment. There is an emerging and urgent need for qualified healthcare professionals to work with different groups or individuals in rehabilitation and exercise referral. This means you, as a sport therapist, will be busy when you graduate!
Our BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Therapy students are based in the Cambridge Centre for Sport and Exercise Sciences. Our BA (Hons) Music Performance will challenge your creativity. You’ll learn to analyse and deconstruct existing modes of performance, songwriting and composition before finding your own way to create new performances or rework the music of others.
As the course develops, you’ll examine increasingly complex performance scenarios, using them to inform aspects of your own live work. Weekly performance workshops in Year 2 will help you hone your stagecraft in particular styles of performance, while analysis seminars will allow you to explore vocal and instrument techniques by genre.

You’ll learn to tell stories which engage audiences, whether you want to write poetry, drama, short fiction, or make films and documentaries. You’ll explore and develop professional writing techniques related to film including screenwriting and film journalism.
You’ll get invaluable feedback on all of your creative writing work from professional writers, including our teaching staff and Royal Literary Fund fellows, as well as your fellow students. This will offer you the unique opportunity to consider a range of responses to your work, as well as sharpening your own critical skills.
Investigating filmmaking practices from all over the world, and learning the language of film from the perspective of a filmmaker, you’ll make your own short films in video, animation or 16mm format, with full training in camera operation, sound recording and editing from professional filmmakers. If you specialise in filmmaking, you’ll put your well-practised skills to the test in a project that, once complete, will be screened at the Cambridge Arts Picturehouse. The best may also be selected for showing at the Cambridge Film Festival. You’ll learn to write knowledgeably and critically about film, giving you even more opportunities to get involved in Cambridge’s exciting arts scene.
Our optional modules allow you to further explore your interests or specialise for a particular career. As a Musical Theatre student at ARU, you’ll train with industry professionals, take part in showcases and productions from Year 1, and gain real-world experience.
On our BA (Hons) Musical Theatre degree you will gain skills unique to musical theatre training, specifically actor-musicianship, physical theatre, dance and choreography.
Your tutors will include established musical directors, artistic directors and choreographers – and you’ll learn in professional facilities including our Mumford Theatre.
With a buzzing creative scene, and opportunities to perform in renowned local venues, Cambridge is the perfect place to study Musical Theatre. You can even choose to study abroad for a semester, with funding on offer to help cover the cost.
In your first year as a Musical Theatre student we’ll work on a small-scale musical, before tackling a full-scale book musical as your second year begins.
Next comes an Industry Project on an intense four- to five-week schedule, led by a professional director and our resident Musical Director. This gives you a real-world, authentic experience of industry practice in musical theatre production. We’ll also support you to learn through work-based projects, internships or placements. You can even take an optional placement year.
Our Musical Theatre degree features four productions and two skills showcases. You’ll learn advanced audition techniques and produce your own showreel. Alongside this, you’ll gain confidence, emotional resilience, and the ability to work as part of a team.

You’ll also develop research and communication skills that are highly valued in the job market, and can tailor your degree to your particular career goals by choosing from our wide range of optional modules, taking an optional placement year, spending a semester abroad, learning a foreign language, or studying for the internationally recognised CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)* qualification alongside your degree.
Our BA (Hons) English Language and Linguistics course was ranked 7th in the UK for Overall Satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2020, with a score of 95%.
Our team of expert lecturers will be on-hand to support you throughout your time at ARU, including Dr Bettina Beinhoff (Perceiving Identity through Accent – Attitudes towards Non-Native Speakers and their Accents in English), Dr Sebastian Rasinger (Quantitative Research in Linguistics: An Introduction) and Prof. Michelle Sheehan (co-author, The Philosophy of Universal Grammar).
Once you’ve graduated, you can continue to develop your skills with one of our Masters degrees, such as our MA Applied Linguistics and TESOL or MA Intercultural Communication.
At the end of the first year of your degree course, you can apply to study for the internationally recognised CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) alongside your BA (Hons). You will need to research and complete a language task and attend a group interview. The task and the interview will be used to check that you meet the entry requirements for the CELTA qualification, which are different from the course entry requirements
If you are accepted onto the CELTA course, you must complete the syllabus for the CELTA, both the methodology and teaching practice modules, in one academic year. You’ll take part in supervised lesson planning, observation of experienced teachers and assessed teaching practice, with support and feedback from experienced CELTA tutors. Having successfully completed all elements of the course, you will be awarded the CELTA qualification. This qualification will enable you to start teaching English as a second or other language immediately.
