Our facilities are the perfect places to test and research different materials and designs throughout your Civil Engineering course. You’ll work in specialist labs for geotechnics, hydraulics, structures, engineering materials and concrete testing. You'll go out on site visits, and hear guest lecturers from industry. This course includes, at a subsidised cost, a week-long residential field trip to Constructionarium in the first year. Constructionarium is a hands-on construction experience for students; participants construct scaled down versions of bridges, buildings, dams and civil engineering projects from all around the world. The principle is to link academic institutes with industry and to ensure that you can apply your knowledge in a practical, safe and relevant environment.

Policing is growing as a profession. The Association of Police and Crime Commissioners and National Police Chiefs Council recently set out a ten-year plan for transforming the police, in order to deal with rapidly changing demands in England and Wales.

As of 2020, taking a pre-join degree will be one of three possible routes into policing as a Police Constable. This route, licensed by the College of Policing, will allow you to follow their curriculum, as well as gaining a wider understanding of law enforcement and the justice sector.

Our new four-year MEng Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering degree course is about combining the mechanical with the electrical. It's been created with a focus on project-based learning, allowing you to take the theory you've learned in class and apply it in a hands-on project module that runs throughout Year 1.

You will study alongside other mechanical engineering students, specialising in mechatronics and robotics manufacturing in your final year and in certain modules throughout your course. You will focus on the electronic application of engineering – how this can blend with mechanical engineering to move technology forwards.

While studying our Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering degree course, you will learn through a wide range of lab sessions. We explore manufacturing, 3D printing, thermodynamics, dynamics, and structural analysis so you can analyse, calculate, model, and experience your proposed concepts. As a part of your project-based learning you work in a multidisciplinary team with students from different areas of mechanical engineering. Our Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering course leads you through computer-based advanced design, simulation and modelling practice in various topics including computational engineering, fluid dynamics, stress analysis, and industrial management

These include CAD/CAM and engineering computer modelling centre, industrial-scale CNC milling and lathe machines, metal and plastic rapid prototyping machines, scanning electronic microscope, Instron bi-axial fatigue-testing machine, tensile-testing machine, material-preparation facilities, welding equipment, electronic testing and measuring equipment such as oscilloscopes and signal generating and testing facilities, wind tunnel, air compressors, steam engine and many more.

With our newly designed courses your learning will be based around the civil engineering project, giving you the chance to immediately apply the theory you learn in class to the challenges of the project.

Studying our MEng Civil and Environmental Engineering degree course will give you the knowledge and skills in the management of construction projects. You will assess the safety of a structure such as an old building to approve it as safe for others to work on, and provide specifications and calculations for designs.

Using our specialist workshops and labs you will learn how to carry out site investigations, select the best materials for the job, analyse and design structures and engineering systems, plan the construction process and assess and mitigate the environmental impact of the project. You’ll design, analyse, build and test your projects, developing your technical skills and knowledge through hands-on practice, preparing you to hit the ground running as a graduate civil engineer.

What is the difference between a BEng and a BSc?
Our BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering course focuses on the contractor and production, so if it's the construction site that excites you, this is course for you. If you're interested in the design and analysis of infrastructure, the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering will give you the theoretical framework to work in consultancy.

So what is an MEng?
Our BEng and BSc courses are both accredited. However, to reach CEng (Chartered Status) you will need to go on and do a Masters degree. An MEng is a four-year course that incorporates a BEng degree with a postgraduate year, giving you the ability to apply for CEng status at the end of your course.

What are the differences between our MEng courses?
Our MEng courses will have a lot of shared modules, but give you the opportunity to specialise in your preferred area as well as gain CEng status. If you aren’t sure what area you want to focus on, there's always the chance to switch courses when you join with us.

As well as covering the basics, our course includes a number of optional modules. Choose to explore business innovation, financial management, leadership or intercultural management – and tailor your studies to suit your interests.

Whatever your background is, our course will meet your personal, professional and educational needs through engaging with innovation, research and leadership.

For the blended version of the course, each module starts with a two day workshop to explain the module and expectations. It's also an opportunity to build relationships with peers and staff. Part-time students will do two days of workshops and one module per trimester. Full-time students will do four, one-day workshop and two modules per trimester. The workshops will be in Chelmsford but if numbers are sufficient they can be put on at our Cambridge campus.

The rest of the learning is distance learning through the virtual learning environment. This has been built as a very innovative learning environment which addresses all learning styles.

For distance only students, the workshop will be replicated online through our virtual learning environment.

Each module takes a virtual international journey – the first is the Siberian express travelling from Moscow to China. Students can collect different types of learning materials at each station and the complete tasks, activities and exercises to help develop their learning on each subject area. Students also have access to a blog and a discussion board to post answers and questions with an alert on each one so the distance learning module tutor managing the environment will then be alerted when students have posted. There's also a goods van with study skills material in it.
