Our Product Design course helps you to take your imaginative ideas and make them real. To do that you need both the creativity and the technical skills to bring your ideas to life.

On this course you’ll study the fundamentals of maths and science, electrical, electronic and mechanical principles, and simulation and fluid dynamics, as well as the functional and market-led requirements of product design.

You’ll look at specific areas including technology integration, computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D design, sustainability and design for manufacture, and be taught by academics with current industry connections.

Analyse the most significant issues of the 21st century, such as factors that influence states going to war, why some states are weaker than others are, and how global order is maintained. Our course will enable you to obtain an advanced understanding of the modern world, including the way in which states, regions and international organisations interact, and practice a range of methods and methodologies to support research and policy analysis.

Our wide range of core and optional modules – including Britain and European Integration, Global Health and International Trade Theory and Practice – will help you to develop the subject-specific knowledge and professional skills necessary for a career in any field related to international relations.

This course will challenge you to explore the diverse and novel application of textiles and push the boundaries of textile design and production. We aim to equip you with the creative skills to enter the industry with an innovative vision for the application of textile materials and the advanced technical expertise to design, construct and test garments in a specialist area.

We encourage applications from students from either design or technical backgrounds, and previous students on this course have created some of the most exciting, pioneering work by drawing on their wide-ranging areas of expertise. We have seen an engineering graduate using lasers to enhance the design process, a mechanical design engineer investigating the performance of lightweight synthetic motorcycle clothing and a contour design graduate developing clothing for amputees.

Sustainability is embedded into the curriculum. You will critically examine the ethical and environmental impact of design and explore a variety of materials and processes. Quantity Surveying and Construction focuses on controlling and managing the costs of construction projects; you could be involved with any stage of a project, from feasibility, design and construction, through to extension, refurbishment, maintenance and even demolition.

Our course will help you gain an understanding of the technical aspects of construction over the whole life of a building or facility. You will learn to understand contracts, budgets, quantities, measurements and sustainability to achieve the best quality and value within the project’s specifications. You are likely to be involved in a range of services, from cost consultancy to contract management.

Contour Fashion is a huge, established and specialised field within fashion design. It is defined by garments worn close to, or shaping the contours of the human form, including corsetry, lingerie, swimwear, performance sportswear, nightwear and athleisure. The Contour Fashion Innovation MA is ideal for contour graduates with advanced pattern-cutting skills wishing to further their practice, or fashion or textile graduates who want to specialise in contour design.

The course explores creativity, technologies and entrepreneurship, alongside the technical considerations of this complex specialism. Contextual studies into historical, political, social and cultural considerations are at the core of this programme and fuel intellectual curiosity, speculative enquiry, imagination, and divergent thinking to successfully understand design concepts.

Balancing taught with independent study, the course is delivered from practical and scholarly perspectives through studio-based and classroom activities. We will help you develop into a creative professional such as craftsperson, jeweller, ceramicist, textile artist, designer-maker, glass artist, designer, researcher, consultant, curator, buyer, stylist or educator. You will be encouraged to select a specialism, helping you establish your own personal creative voice and be capable of producing inspiring work.

You will explore both traditional hand skills and emerging technologies while working with a wide range of materials such as hot glass, clay, paper, fine metals, plastics, resin, wood and textiles. Students produce a wide range of objects, including individual artefacts for galleries and to commission, small batches of similar items, limited editions, public installations and designs for industry. Bespoke objects are produced for domestic, interior spaces, exterior spaces, to be worn on the body, and can be hand-held or large-scale sculptural pieces.

Professional practice is embedded throughout the course to grow your entrepreneurial and business skills, preparing you for your career. Graduates have gone on to set up their own craft workshops, secure roles in design studios with brands including Sainsbury’s, work in the craft industry with leading ceramicists, for example Sue Pryke and Hannah Tounsend, as well as to collaborate with the likes of the National Trust.
