This course explores the application and development of techniques used by enterprises for the analysis of business information. On our Business Intelligence Systems and Data Mining MSc, your learning will be supported by experienced SAS-accredited staff, who will equip you with a comprehensive understanding of SAS business intelligence software.

You will learn about the Business Intelligence system concept, its application in organisations, and its relationships with other computer-based information systems – such as decision and management support, data warehouses and artificial intelligence.

We will teach you to review data mining methods and techniques available for effectively uncovering important information from large data sets. In doing so, you will develop an in-depth knowledge of data mining methods and gain practical experience of using the data mining software, SAS Enterprise Miner.

The course will enable you to develop skills in the analysis of international financial markets and institutions, and provide you with a conceptual and theoretical grounding in current concepts and techniques in bank financial management, portfolio management, financial econometrics, business analytics and associated areas.

You will also be introduced to a range of empirical techniques enabling you to analyse sectoral dynamics, the impact of innovation on performance, and the impact of regulation and policy interventions on the financial services industry. The modules you will take consider international aspects of banking and finance and you will have the option to work on an Executive Company Project or traditional dissertation during the summer. Accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), this course puts you at the forefront of specialist areas of electrical and electronic engineering and will help you master a skillset that meets industry needs. You will study a range of core topics, including Electronic Circuits and Systems and Embedded Systems, and choose from optional modules, such as Mobile Communication and Advanced Power Electronics and Applications, to tailor the course to your interests.

Whether you opt for the three-year BEng (Hons) programme or the four-year integrated master's MEng, our experienced staff will further your understanding of electrical and electronic engineering principles, and will also develop your design, research and project management skills.  

In your final year you will focus on a substantial piece of individual research or product development work targeted to your interests, giving you the opportunity to showcase your understanding and skills.

Our dedicated facilities are divided into several specialised areas each featuring experimental equipment, such as: general electronics and assembly, digital electronics and microprocessor engineering supported by state-of-the-art measurement devices and workstations, power electronics, control systems and communications engineering, and Smart Grid.

Accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), this course helps to give you an understanding of the human mind and how it shapes and influences our behaviour. The programme explores human behaviour using sound scientific methodology – observation, measurement, and testing – to understand how and why people function in the way they do. Alongside studies in psychology, you will also explore the study of crime, how psychological theories can be applied to criminal behaviour, and social reactions to crime.

Computational Intelligence (CI) encompasses the techniques and methods used to tackle problems that traditional approaches to computing struggle to solve. The four areas of fuzzy logic, neural networks, CI optimisation and knowledge-based systems encompass much of what is considered to be computational (or artificial) intelligence. There are also opportunities to apply what you learn in areas such as robot control and games development, depending on your interests.

You can choose from a number of specialist modules including natural language processing, artificial neural networks and data mining techniques, while developing your skills in our dedicated robotics laboratory, equipped with a variety of mobile robots. The applied computational intelligence module considers knowledge-based systems, as well as the historical, philosophical and future implications of AI, and focuses on current research and applications in the area.   

Our course encompasses two distinct practical themes - concept art and comic art, both of which focus on fundamental, traditional art skills and contemporary digital techniques.

In concept art you will be helped to master a range of industry-focused tools and techniques for developing pre-production, production and post-production art for the film and video game industries. In comic art you will develop a practical understanding of idea generation, visual storytelling and visual communication.

These two themes mean you will access a wide range of creative possibilities and opportunities. They are underpinned by contextual studies to inform and enhance your practice through an exploration of the historical, cultural and social contexts of the wider world of print and web-based comic arts, graphic novels and visual communication.
