It links academic knowledge to the practical applications of biomedical science, particularly in relation to modern diagnostic methods. You can choose to study one of two pathways – haematology or medical microbiology. Taught by researchers and expert practitioners, the course content is kept up to date through extensive links with leading healthcare and research laboratories such as GlaxoSmithKline, the Institute of Cancer Research and local hospitals. In addition, key features of the course include the following.

Biomedical Science is a course that covers a huge range of topics, such as cancer screening, diagnosing HIV, blood transfusion, the control of infections, immunology and conditions such as cancer and heart disease. It could be the ideal course for you if you enjoy laboratory investigation and the monitoring of diseases.

You'll be introduced to biological and chemical principles, molecular and cell biology, physiology, anatomy, biochemistry, and relevant laboratory techniques.

You'll also independently research a subject that interests you. This might include a laboratory-based project, analysis of survey information, or a review of scientific literature.

This course explores current trends in chemical, biological and biotechnological therapeutics and examines the latest technologies in the pharmaceutical industry. You will gain an understanding of processes used in clinical trials and in the development, manufacture and regulation of medicines. Through an independent research project, you will study an area of interest in depth. Examples of projects include: medicinal chemistry (eg. synthesis of anti-cancer compounds and natural products), pharmaceutical technology (eg. optimisation of tablet manufacture and formulation), and clinical pharmacy (eg. pharmacovigilance, clinical trial and medicines regulations).
