As part of your course you’ll:

• Learn more about your current artistic interests as you draw from a range of disciplines as inspiration for your project work

• Undertake a professional placement during your second year

Leeds is home to hundreds of professional theatre collectives, dance companies and arts festivals so you’ll be surrounded by a vibrant creative community and an exciting range of performance work.

We’ll support you in setting up your second-year professional placement. You could spend a semester learning alongside and networking with one of the many artistic companies in Leeds or you could choose to travel abroad to work for an international organisation. Our students have previously completed placements at Company Chameleon in Manchester, BMotion Festival in Bassano del Grappa, Italy and with theatre company Third Angel based in Sheffield.

All of the staff teaching on your course are practising artists, which means our teaching is based on real professional experience. You’ll also have the chance to attend additional workshops delivered by external artists and companies.

Train to be a qualified social worker and gain a thorough grasp of the knowledge, skills and values that sit at the core of this rewarding career. Recognising the powerful links between personal and political issues, the course will assert the need to challenge inequality and safeguard vulnerable people.

In your first year, you will study the legal frameworks, policies and theories - in particular psychosocial perspectives - that underpin social work. A practice placement will offer you the chance to hone your communication skills as you start to apply your knowledge in the field.

In your second year, you will continue to extend and refine your understanding of the law. You'll also undertake a second practice placement and complete a dissertation. This course remains approved by Social Work England. This means that people qualifying from this course can apply to become a registered social worker.

Accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), this course allows you to study a range of contemporary themes within human geography, including globalisation, sustainability, identity and the diversity of human living.

As part of your course, you’ll:

• Learn about the role that planning plays in helping to shape our cities and towns and make them better places for us to live
• Engage with live projects through a wide range of field trips, from half-day site visits in Leeds to week-long field trips further afield, giving you the opportunity to apply your classroom learning in the real world
• Be entitled to free student membership of the RTPI

Professional links
Many of our academics are active in or have previous experience of working in planning practice, and guest lecturers provide further professional links. This also leads to opportunities for hands-on experience via participation in real-world projects and consultations.

Develop the specialist skills and knowledge to enter the games, digital and creative entertainment industries.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Focus on three main areas: programming and software engineering; art, concept and asset production; and game design studies, practice and theory
• Take products from an initial idea through the design, visualisation and technical implementation stages
• Be encouraged to foster your individual creativity
• Produce games based on your ideas
• Work with other students and tutors who have a passion for games and gaming

 Placement opportunities, networking events and guest lectures from industry experts such as Disney animator Aaron Blaise and codemasters Team17 Digital and Dan Gray from UsTwoGames will enhance your awareness of the career opportunities open to you.

We are also members of industry network, Game Republic, where past students have won awards from industry judges in the Student Showcase Competition.

Final year students also have the opportunity to showcase their work in front of leading employers at the end of year degree show. You can see some of their work in the Leeds School of Arts Festival. Previous years have seen many of our students gain job offers through the showcase opportunities.

 You’ll also engage with real businesses through live projects, chair discussions and guest lectures. Past speakers include the CEO of the London Stock Exchange, the Chief Executive of the British Bankers Association and the Chief Economist of Yorkshire Bank.

This course will allow you to become a qualified youth and community worker, increasing your employment opportunities in this rapidly changing field. It is validated by the National Youth Agency.

You will participate in a rich and culturally diverse teaching and learning environment and undertake two challenging placements, enabling you to apply your knowledge and hone your practical skills. During your studies, you will critically engage with the tensions and challenges of current practice, build a sophisticated knowledge of effective management approaches, debate how youth work and community development has responded to shifting government policies and learn how to support inclusive practice that can inspire positive social change.

This course has been designed on the principles which promote social justice, and challenge injustice and inequality. Alongside the taught modules, you will be able take advantage of our professional development programme, which offers the chance to explore and understand recent developments in the field, exchange experiences with colleagues and practitioners and learn from one another. You will also gain an understanding of how to conduct research as a practitioner, and undertake an in-depth dissertation study.

As the UK's cities and towns continue to expand, there is an increased demand for experts in property and real estate management.

This RICS accredited course reflects the real-world workings of the property and construction industries, preparing you for a career in property investment and development, property management or real estate management.

As part of your course, you’ll:

• Develop a combination of technical knowledge and professional skills
• Study the planning, building, maintenance and day-to-day management of properties from domestic dwellings to full-scale industrial and commercial units
• Cover key topics including estate and property management; portfolio management; valuation for mortgages; negotiation for sale, purchase, leasing or auction; and the financial aspects of real estate, including the financing of real estate projects
• Explore the impact of urban and regional planning policies on property management
• Gain the skills to work with planners to enhance commercial development proposals within a given timescale and budget

Working closely with other built environment students, you’ll take part in projects that mirror the professional relationships you’ll experience in industry. This will develop your sense of identity as a property manager and provide you with an understanding of the role played by bankers, accountants, developers, surveyors and investors in the real estate industry.

Quantity surveyors are the cost managers of the construction industry. While studying for a recognised degree, you’ll learn how quantity surveyors organise, control and manage the costing of projects, including building economics, contracts and construction law, construction technology and project management.

As part of your course, you’ll:

• Undertake individual and group assessments and develop core skills
• Build analytical, arithmetic and IT abilities
• Develop as an innovative team player with the problem solving and transferable skills needed to succeed
• Gain the confidence and skills to tackle difficult contractual situations and negotiations
• Develop an industry perspective on contemporary issues in the field

Sandwich year
Our sandwich route includes a one year industry placement, enabling you to take advantage of the strong links we have with local authorities, commercial organisations and private quantity surveying practices - all of whom provide placement opportunities for our students.

As part of this course you’ll:

• Learn to help people of all ages to manage pain and dysfunction
• Study the core areas of neuromusculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory and neurological physiotherapy
• Practise thinking independently and problem solving in a clinical capacity
• Gain comprehensive hands-on experience through diverse clinical practice placements

Professional regulation
This course is accredited by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and approved by the Health & Care Professions Council and will provide you with the necessary expertise and skills to become a qualified physiotherapist.

• Explore social psychological approaches that extend Western scientific thought
• Reconsider ideas of consciousness, mind, self and social living from a range of alternative cultural frameworks including psychoanalysis, discursive psychology and non-Western belief systems such as Buddhism and Daoism
• Gain insights into how the environment, spirituality, language and relationships shape who we are and what we become
• Develop a critical philosophy of what it means to be human

You can get involved in plenty of volunteering opportunities in several areas including mental health and disability support. We also have strong ties with local charitable and community organisations, helping you to understand issues such as domestic abuse as well as child and adolescent psychotherapy.

You’ll gain unique perspectives by looking into the important works of Sigmund Freud and Karl Marx and discuss theories gleaned from film and literature works. You’ll challenge contemporary thought on psychology, spiritualism, religion and culture, bridging the gap between the self and society.
