You will participate in a rich and culturally diverse teaching and learning environment and undertake two challenging placements, enabling you to apply your knowledge and hone your practical skills. During your studies, you will critically engage with the tensions and challenges of current practice, build a sophisticated knowledge of effective management approaches, debate how youth work and community development has responded to shifting government policies and learn how to support inclusive practice that can inspire positive social change.

This course has been designed on the principles which promote social justice, and challenge injustice and inequality. Alongside the taught modules, you will be able take advantage of our professional development programme, which offers the chance to explore and understand recent developments in the field, exchange experiences with colleagues and practitioners and learn from one another. You will also gain an understanding of how to conduct research as a practitioner, and undertake an in-depth dissertation study.

Develop a thorough and critical understanding of psychological theory and research methods.

As part of this course you’ll:

• Apply this expertise to your study of human behaviour
• Question why humans act the way they do, delving into specialist areas including drug abuse, clinical and forensic psychology and cognitive neuroscience
• Conduct contemporary psychological research, including laboratory experiments, interviews and focus groups

 You'll meet psychologists and skilled professionals working within psychology who will educate you in how to apply your knowledge in the workplace.

Develop your theoretical understanding, technical skills and creative practice in the emerging field of sonic arts through a series of lectures, seminars and workshops which aim to challenge preconceptions surrounding musical composition, performance and sound art.

You will explore varied approaches to sound practice through exposure to modern ideas and techniques in the areas of electroacoustic music, spatial sound, contemporary music thinking and sound interactivity. You will have the chance to investigate new software and hardware tools, inquire into the ideas and practical work of the most influential contemporary music thinkers, such as John Cage, Pierre Schaeffer and Brian Eno, and produce a variety of creative artefacts to begin building your own music and sound repertoire.

The course is delivered by a team of practitioners, whose work at the forefront of this field enjoy critical acclaim at an international level, and who will support you in preparing for a career in sound or further study.

Designed in consultation with statutory, charitable and voluntary crime-related agencies in the region, this course will allow you to explore current issues in criminology and criminal justice and reflect upon the related themes of race, ethnicity, gender, state power, and war.

As part of your course, you'll:

• Study theoretical approaches in criminology and their methods of criminological research
• Develop an advanced understanding of the dimensions of social divisions and social diversity
• Understand local, national, and international contexts of crime, victimisation and punishment, and responses to crime and deviance
• Apply your knowledge in a dissertation aligned to your personal interests or career ambitions

Nutrition plays a key part in the promotion of good health and the primary prevention of diet-related illness in communities and populations.

As part of this course, you’ll:

• Become a critically reflective practitioner and gain practical experience in our health science and catering laboratories
• Gain an understanding of the relationship between food, nutrition and health
• Manage, analyse, interpret and communicate information and statistics about nutrition related health and disease states
• Undertake work-based placements to apply your expertise and refine your practical skills
• Have the option of undertaking a sandwich placement in year three

Develop the technical and creative skills you’ll need to write music for the moving image.

As part of this course you’ll:

• Gain a solid grounding in the theories, techniques and practices essential for contemporary film and television music production
• Have access to a suite of high-quality, professional music studios approved by JAMES, the accrediting body of the Music Producers Guild and the Association of Professional Recording Services
• Develop your composition skills in a range of genres
• Have the chance to work with colleagues from other media courses to further develop your portfolio of work; for example, you could find yourself working alongside student filmmakers from our university's Northern Film School
• Have plenty of opportunities to sharpen your practical skills through our links with local and national music, arts and festival organisations

This trend is leading to a greater demand for communications professionals who can plan strategic PR campaigns and implement social media and viral campaigns in order to drive businesses forward in the digital age.

You will be paired with an experienced mentor from industry, who will offer valuable advice on your future career and the latest developments in the field. You will also take on a live public relations consultancy project for a client.

You’ll have access to software such as Logic Pro, Cubase, Adobe Audition, MAX MSP and Synthmaker. Your specialist modules might require you to use Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Unreal and other industry standard software.
