This course will allow you to become a qualified youth and community worker, increasing your employment opportunities in this rapidly changing field. It is validated by the National Youth Agency.

You will participate in a rich and culturally diverse teaching and learning environment and undertake two challenging placements, enabling you to apply your knowledge and hone your practical skills. During your studies, you will critically engage with the tensions and challenges of current practice, build a sophisticated knowledge of effective management approaches, debate how youth work and community development has responded to shifting government policies and learn how to support inclusive practice that can inspire positive social change.

This course has been designed on the principles which promote social justice, and challenge injustice and inequality. Alongside the taught modules, you will be able take advantage of our professional development programme, which offers the chance to explore and understand recent developments in the field, exchange experiences with colleagues and practitioners and learn from one another. You will also gain an understanding of how to conduct research as a practitioner, and undertake an in-depth dissertation study.

Develop key skills in economics, accounting and management with a strong vocational focus.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Explore the principles of economics and how they apply to business
• Gain both a theoretical and practical understanding of the economic decisions faced by business managers
• Develop the ability to analyse the economic and social environments in which those decisions are taken

If you take a paid work placement in your third year you’ll develop and enhance your employability skills. Past students have completed placements with companies including Mercedes Benz, Price Waterhouse Cooper and high street retail banks.

You will specialise in either contemporary literature or creative writing. Taught in workshops held on weekday evenings, you will be able to fit your studies around your existing commitments.

Contemporary Literature
Specialise in researching contemporary literature. You will be introduced to a range of recent literary texts in English and develop an advanced, critical understanding of recent debates on the contemporary creative process.

You will be encouraged by expert tutors to develop your skills in close reading, creating and delivering presentations and formal discussions. Modules will explore how contemporary literary studies is a creative process, and will enable you to specialise in topics at the cutting edge of the discipline.   

Your independent project will enable you to experience the process of defining your own area of investigation and conducting in-depth research and writing.

Creative Writing
Study creative writing at an advanced level. From the outset, you will focus on developing particular expertise in the writing process, and the texts and theories you study will enhance your writing practice.

Gain valuable professional skills and specialist knowledge in both marketing and public relations.

As part of your course you’ll:

• Explore a range of topics, from digital marketing to reputation management and campaign development to customer relations
• Understand and positively respond to the changing technological, political, ethical and legal contexts within which organisations currently operate
• Take a real-life client-centred approach to learning though project work, campaigns and consultancy in this dynamic sector

• Explore the technologies and techniques used in the recording, production and reproduction of sound and music
• Fuel your creativity while expanding your theoretical knowledge
• Access industry-standard facilities, including our impressive recording studios, post-production rooms and portable recording and audio analysis devices
• Have the option to work with external clients in your final year

This course is accredited by JAMES (Joint Audio Media Education Support) which encourages the delivery of workshops and lectures from industry professionals. A placement option and your final year project will provide you with opportunities to work with industry partners.

Course structure
You’ll study a balance of history and media modules in your first year, helping you develop a strong skillset and knowledge of methodologies in each discipline. Things like source analysis and media interpretation.

In your second year, you’ll bring your skillset together by completing your first interdisciplinary module. You’ll also begin driving your studies in the direction you want through a wide range of module options.

Your third year culminates in the completion of your dissertation, which explores and celebrates the interconnections between history and media. Employability is embedded throughout your course.

Add managerial knowledge and capabilities to your skillset to equip you for leadership roles in whatever career you decide to forge.

You will learn the broad principles of business management that will make you employable in the public, private and charitable sectors. With a particular focus on international business, you will develop a global outlook and gain an understanding of how larger organisations with an international presence compete successfully across a range of cultures and economic environments.
