Over the course of our Biomedical Science degree, you’ll gain an in-depth understanding of the biological principles that relate to the workings of the human body, as well as the characteristics and diagnosis of disease leading to possible therapeutic interventions.

After gaining a solid grounding in the principles of biomedical science, you’ll move on to specialist topics, acquiring the in-depth understanding and advanced techniques vital for professional practice. That means you’ll study a range of areas, from cell and molecular biology, physiological systems and research skills, to blood science, cellular science, and techniques and applications in biomedical science, to name but a few.

In your final year, you’ll get the chance to develop your own particular interests with a major project. With our excellent facilities and close links with local hospitals, by the time you graduate you’ll be ready for the next stage of your career.

Placement options
You can apply to transfer to the four-year BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science with Placement Year program, which provides the opportunity to go on a placement for at least 36 weeks, to get a taste of professional life in either a clinical or industrial setting. You will be required to secure your own placements for this route and as such the placements are not guaranteed. You will be required to pass a medical health check and be vaccinated to work in medical fields. You’ll also need a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service certificate, which is completed through the University.

Once enrolled on this program, you will be also be given the opportunity to apply to transfer to the full-time four-year BSc (Hons) Applied Biomedical Science placement route. This very specific route provides the opportunity to complete a 48-week placement in an Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) approved training laboratory and work towards completion of the IBMS Registration Portfolio. Graduates from this degree route will be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist. The number of placements are limited by the capacity of local placement providers, making this a highly competitive placement route.

With our BSc (Hons) Chemistry degree, we blend laboratory study with classroom learning to ensure you graduate with a balanced understanding of the subject, from inorganic and organic chemistry, to physical and analytical chemistry.

We’ve worked to shape our curriculum around industry needs and developments, so we’ll equip you with the skills and strengths that employers want. And, while the units you’ll study provide a well-rounded understanding of the subject as a whole, you’ll also have the flexibility to focus on those areas that interest you most – developing the knowledge, experience and skills you’ll need to fulfill your professional or academic ambitions. As such, we cover a wide range of specialist areas, including physiochemical processes, materials chemistry, drug discovery, green chemistry, catalysis, computational chemical modelling, spectroscopy, and synthetic chemistry.

Our chemistry degree also provides the option of spending an extra year expanding your horizons, either studying with one of our partner universities overseas, or working on a placement in industry.

Placement options
The four-year placement route gives you the opportunity of spending your third year on an industrial placement. The Department of Natural Sciences offers help with finding a suitable placement and experience has shown that placements can lead to improved performance in the final year and improved employment prospects after graduation.

Counselling and psychotherapy are terms for a wide variety of evidence-based talking and listening approaches which apply established theories to promote psychological change.

Alongside the main discipline of psychology, each year of this course offers specialist units where you’ll study the fields of counselling and psychotherapy.

Our course also covers all core elements of psychological study as required by the British Psychological Society (BPS), from lifespan development, neuropsychology, and research methods, to social and critical, and abnormal psychology.

In addition to theory, you’ll also learn basic practical counselling skills. Some of these skills may include how to offer acceptance, empathic listening, questioning techniques and how to develop practitioner resilience. You’ll mostly learn through role-play in pairs and small groups, listening, observing and giving feedback to your peers.

Optional internship year

When you have successfully completed your taught units, you will have the opportunity to undertake a 36-48 week internship. You will be supported by our Placement Office, who have extensive contacts with the industry and over 25 years of experience of helping students to find placements.

The Placement Office advertise a variety of opportunities, support and advise on the application and recruitment process and continue to support you whilst you are away from the University.

This course rethinks the use, practice and industry of Textiles within the 21st century. It is responsive to an emerging global landscape that requires, sustainable, design-led, innovative positions to be adopted from which to anticipate and forecast our Textile futures.

Manchester and the School of Art have been at the forefront of textiles innovation since the late 19th Century and this course is built on that rich heritage, offering students the opportunity to challenge and innovate in equal measure.

As a student, you will develop innovative study hubs of interdisciplinary expertise, which will both rethink and regenerate textiles within its expanded field (including Textile Craft, Innovation and Digital specialisms). As computing technology becomes more integral to our homes, workplaces and public services, cybercrime is increasingly widespread and dangerous. With our BSc (Hons) Cyber Security, you’ll be part of the solution as you learn to investigate breaches and harness secure systems.

You’ll specialise in identifying different cyber security attacks and mitigation techniques, detecting and responding to network-based intrusions, ethical hacking and testing approaches, and applied cryptography. And because other people’s private data is involved, you’ll also explore the legal and ethical implications and how they relate to cyber security.

Throughout our cyber security degree, you’ll also gain a broad understanding of core computing subjects, such as programming, mathematics for computing, databases, networks and operating systems.
