The MA/MFA Performance is an exciting taught masters programme that offers a practical, versatile and interdisciplinary approach to performance-making and training. The programme provides students with an advanced and practical understanding of current performance practices, drawing on a broad range of artistic and theoretical influences. The development of new creative practice is at the core of the programme, as well as how this work might be developed and profiled in a professional context.

Furthermore, MA/MFA Performance also offers students the chance to specialise in either of the distinctive areas of laboratory theatre or contemporary performance, or to combine elements from both with direct experience of a current professional arts context. The experience of these options is fed through a further process of critical and professional contextualisation, before students embark on the creation of their own major projects as the culmination of the degree.

The Master of Landscape Architecture is a professional qualification, accredited by the Landscape Institute, which provides a route to an internationally recognised qualification in a fast growing, global profession.

The MLA combines an emphasis on individual practice and an exploratory, experimental approach, with a strong professional underpinning. It is both a conversion course for graduates of related subject areas and a final postgraduate year of education for landscape graduates.

The subject is awarded by Manchester Metropolitan University where it has been taught for over 40 years and today forms part of the prestigious Manchester School of Architecture. Students with a good honours degree in Landscape Architecture may enter directly into Part 2 of the programme (1 year full-time).

BSc Sociology with Quantitative Methods offers exciting opportunities for you to study the cutting-edge discipline of sociology in the vibrant city of Manchester, whilst gaining extensive quantitative skills. It is aimed at students who want to understand and analyse contemporary social phenomena, trends and problems as well as develop a specialism in quantitative methods to study society.

The first year introduces you to the building blocks of sociology: key sociological concepts and theories, social divisions and problems, and major transformations – such as globalisation or digital culture – which are altering the fabric of contemporary society. You will receive training in a wide range of research methods, both qualitative and quantitative, during the first two years. In the final year, you will focus on quantitative research methods for designing, implementing and analysing social issues and complete an independent project.

Our large, multi-disciplinary department believes in offering extensive optionality to study specific areas of sociology in depth. Throughout the degree, there is an emphasis on developing skills and experiences that are relevant to professional careers, including work experience, study-abroad schemes, and independent project work. In the final year, there is the opportunity to complete a placement in a relevant organisation. You may also have the opportunity to spend an extra year expanding your horizons studying with one of our partner universities overseas.

Psychology is the science of human behaviour and mind. It is concerned with individual psychological processes and the social context of how we think and interact with the world around us. Forensic psychology applies these processes and knowledge to legal domains, helping shape how the police, courts, prisons and probation services understand and react to victims, witnesses and offenders.

Forensic psychology practitioners assess and work with offenders, work with victims and witnesses to crime, and give evidence in court. They might carry out risk assessments on offenders with mental health issues, work with children with anti-social behaviour or create treatment plans to help rehabilitate offenders.

Our course covers all core elements of psychological study as required by the British Psychological Society (BPS), from lifespan development, neuropsychology, and research methods, to social, critical and abnormal psychology. As well as developing a thorough understanding of key psychological research, theory and principles, you’ll also explore a wide range of topics focusing on theories of crime, victimisation and psychology in legal contexts; including offender behaviour, eyewitness testimony, jury decision-making, police investigations, and the assessment and treatment of offenders.

Good journalism is essential to a functioning society. This course is designed to give you all the valuable skills and knowledge needed to work in the diverse and fast-moving environment that is modern journalism and media.

Our core units will give you a solid foundation in the principles and practice of good journalism, and you’ll learn how to cover stories for print, web, TV and radio, and how to adapt a story from one medium to another.

You'll then have the opportunity to develop a specialism and graduate with a bracketed degree title. Depending on your specialism, you could graduate with:

This degree is geared towards inquiring minds and creative thinkers seeking a career in journalism and the creative media industries. Throughout the program, we’ll encourage you to carve out your own creative identity as you express yourself through a variety of media and genres – including print, broadcast and digital publishing.

You’ll start with the core skills of interviewing and reporting, before going on to look at specialist areas like media law and ethics, magazine journalism, editing and production. You’ll also get the chance to work on live events and learn how to cover breaking news – all under the pressure of tight deadlines.

In your third year you’ll be able to focus on your own particular interests, such as sports and music journalism. You’ll also create a portfolio of original journalism, rooted in the real world – real people, real issues, real events.

Throughout it all, you’ll have access to the multimedia newsroom, TV studio and radio production facilities, getting you up to speed with all the latest technology. So, by the time you’re finished, you’ll have acquired the wide range of skills necessary to work in today’s multiplatform digital environments.

Our dedicated placement team has developed excellent links with various industries. You will be offered support through a preparation program of activities, including guidance on selection procedures, working overseas, CV preparation, interview and selection techniques.

The course offers an in-depth understanding of how the law applies to individuals, business and society, not only regionally and nationally but also in the global arena of international relations and multinational corporations.

As such, you will study the effectiveness of the post-1945 legal world order and how the globalised system of business, trade and commercial laws has developed. You will also learn about the growing body of international human rights and European laws, exploring issues around Brexit and the protection of fundamental rights in the UK in particular.

With an element of independent study, you can focus on an area of law that interests you, with the support of specialist academics and researchers who are contributing towards shaping today’s legal, policy and business environment. And, while you can choose to keep your LLM broad, you could instead opt for one of four specialist routes:

MFA Fine Art provides a stimulating environment in which you will be guided to develop your creative aspirations, reach a critical maturity, and gain the self-confidence and skills that will enable you to work as a successful artist.

The course is studio practice-driven and relies on experimentation and critical reflection supported by individualized mentoring, lectures, seminars and group critiques. It emphasizes the articulation of ideas, development of working methods and the realisation of independent work. Seminars are structured to investigate a broad range of themes relevant to the practicing artist and provide a rich diet of inspiration.

The world’s habitats are undergoing rapid transformation. The impacts of climate change are causing species extinction at an unprecedented rate. Conservation biology as a discipline looks at the science behind these changes – including the identification of ecosystems at risk, ways of conserving biodiversity, and the role of genetics and demography.

With our masters, you’ll tackle all that and more, gaining the knowledge and skills for a career at the forefront of conservation. You’ll explore the scientific background to species conservation and the factors driving extinction. You’ll also look at the sustainable use of resources and learn valuable statistical techniques for analysing ecological data. With a range of option units, you’ll be able to specialise in areas like species recovery and behavioural biology.

Ready to test yourself in the real world? You can work with a qualified solicitor offering pro bono services to local people. You might join the Business Law Café offering advice to local SMEs, or maybe you’ll help someone with legal advice and support they wouldn’t normally be able to afford.

Placement options

As part of our full-time LLB degree, you’ll have the opportunity to apply for a work placement year. It’s a chance to apply the academic knowledge you’ve learned in the classroom to a real, professional workplace, while getting the industry experience that will show potential employers that you’re ready to get to work after you’ve graduated.
