On BA (Hons) Philosophy you’ll consider ground-breaking philosophical theories from figures like Socrates, Kant and Nietzsche, to more contemporary thinkers such as Frantz Fanon, Hannah Arendt and Judith Butler. You’ll explore theories about the meaning of life, the nature of reality, who we are as individuals and society, and how these theories have shaped our ideas about humankind. As a philosophy student you will be joining a hub of research-active philosophers with local, national and international impact, with many of them being invited to present at major international conferences and workshops. Our staff work across key areas including History of Philosophy, critical social theories, Philosophy of Art, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Education, History and Philosophy of Science and much more – with this expertise behind us, we can give you a rounded, balanced understanding of the subject.

On this course, you’ll explore the scientific, health and psychosocial factors influencing health and safety in the 21st century.

You’ll study current and emerging legal and compliance issues and consider the many factors that influence workplace safety and health, such as legionella, contaminated land and air quality.

You’ll learn how to formulate, implement and evaluate safety, health and environmental (SHE) management systems for an organisation, including concepts and techniques of occupational health and safety management.

Topics you’ll investigate include the principles and practices of risk management in the workplace, environmental protection and management, and the principal diseases of significance to public health.

You’ll develop your knowledge of hazard and operability analysis (HAZOP), major incident contingency plans (MICP), and occupational hygiene management. You’ll consider topics such as benchmarking safety and risk management and assessment of hazards, risks and dangers at work, including processes in the development and management of ISO 14001 (environmental management) and ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety management) standards.

As well as studying theory, you’ll have practical sessions. You’ll learn skills in how to identify, evidence and analyse concerns for safety at work, such as assessment and control of occupational risks that arise from exposure to hazards at work including noise levels and extreme working environments.

Examine the role of psychologists in legal settings, advances in the psychological understanding of criminal behaviour, and offender assessment and rehabilitation.

Our master's course is specifically designed to meet the criteria of the BPS Division of Forensic Psychology Training Committee. It’s accredited as the first stage towards gaining Chartered Psychologist status with the BPS.

You’ll explore topics such as investigating and prosecuting crime, rehabilitation, and other current issues within forensic psychology.

In practical sessions, you might work on case formulations, complete violence risk assessments and undertake behavioural investigative advice reports.

As well as lectures, seminars and workshops, you’ll have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers to help you learn about what it’s like to work in the field. Past speakers include alumni talking about their careers, members of the local police force, and psychologists working in prisons.

As a Web & User Experience Design student, you will be part of a vibrant, multi-disciplinary creative community at our School of Digital Arts (SODA). With an innovative curriculum that ignores the narrow limits of any one discipline, you’ll have ample opportunity for collaborating with fellow SODA students – whether they’re studying games, photography, animation or sound design (to name a few). It’s an approach designed to mirror the real working practices within the creative industries, but it also lets you find the cross-over areas and creative directions that interest you most. SODA Placement Year
As part of your studies with SODA, you will have the chance to take a year working on placement within the industry. During your year, you will spend at least 36 weeks working within an organisation in the industry, developing workplace skills, practical understanding and genuine industry experience.

Educational psychology draws on a wide range of psychological theory and real-world experiences to build an understanding of how children develop and learn.  It takes account of the social and cultural contexts of children’s lives and schooling, as well as their individual growth and development.

Here at Manchester Met, we are working with key partners in services, schools and communities across Greater Manchester and beyond to create a vibrant place for study.  This course will bring psychological theory and research to life by looking at its influence in key areas for education.  Our course themes reflect priorities shared with our partners and with local and national policy-makers: school readiness; inclusive cultures of practice; and health and wellbeing.  

You'll cover all the core areas of psychology set out by the British Psychological Society, applied to the context of education.

During the three-year course, you’ll experience placement opportunities to develop an understanding of the different psychological approaches needed to address social problems and you'll use data from real world projects to develop skills in research and evaluation with academic staff .

Learning psychology through its real-world applications will provide you with the best opportunity to develop a deep understanding of psychological theory and practices. For example, you'll learn to understand the experiences of children with special educational needs or disabilities. We will also explore how wellbeing can impact learning, particularly how social, emotional, and mental health aspects changes how able a student is to learn.

The Living Lab is at the centre of the Educational Psychology program. It is a place of connection where you'll develop the knowledge and skills to become independent researchers.

The Combined Honours program offers you an opportunity to study two subjects at degree level.

English:
English explores the role of writing in defining and transforming human experience. Creative writing is a contemporary art practice which expresses that experience.

At the Manchester campus, the English department has access to a community of internationally renowned writers and critics through the Manchester Writing School, one of the most successful of its kind in the UK. It boasts over 95 published graduates and its Creative Director is Carol Ann Duffy DBE (Poet Laureate 2009-2019).

Against this backdrop you will examine major periods and forms of literature, learning to analyze literary and media texts by drawing on wider humanities disciplines. Creative writing students will develop the craft of writing, learning to read as a writer and collaborate with artists across the creative spectrum. Both approaches develop the necessary skills in critical thinking and communication that are of value to graduates entering a wide array of career paths or establishing practice.

French:
Proficiency in modern languages can give you the competitive edge in the global jobs market. Our LLM in Legal Practice at the Bar brings together the essential practical skills and knowledge from our Bar Training Course (BTC) and masters-level legal research skills that can help you stand out in a competitive jobs market.

Everything about the BTC element of the course is built to prepare you for life as a barrister. You'll work with other students in a mini chambers group, designed to mirror the real-life practices you'll face in a career at the bar. You’ll further prepare for the demands of the Bar with our innovative professional practice unit, under the mentorship of a practising barrister.

Meanwhile, the LLM advanced study element offers the chance for you to deepen your knowledge in a specialist area of the law.

You’ll learn from a team that includes seasoned barristers, solicitors and a deputy district judge, together with active researchers and scholars who produce impactful legal research in the UK and internationally.
