Where possible, you will be able to study and learn without the University's specialist laboratories. This will be augmented through the use of sophisticated virtual laboratory simulation. Subject to any restrictions as a result of COVID-19, you'll also learn how to use cutting-edge equipment such as MALDI-TOF mass spectrometers and flow cytometers.

The Biomedical Science courses at Middlesex have a burgeoning international reputation and the University's strong links with London hospitals, NHS laboratories and other universities and industrial partners ensures that you will be studying the latest developments, practices and research. Genomic technologies are transforming the Biomedical sciences. Recent developments in DNA sequencing are creating unprecedented opportunities in molecular diagnostics, personal medicine and (infectious) disease prevention. There is a clear need for genomics specialists that can analyse and interpret genome data in a (bio)medical context.

This is an interdisciplinary programme with teaching provided by Life Sciences and Computer Science research active academics as well as other experts in the field. You will gain a comprehensive understanding of how changes in the genome relate to human disease. You will be trained to pursue a career in medical genomics in academia and industry.

This programme has a strong applied and practical focus. Hands-on learning provides you with the skills needed for a successful career in medical genomics.

During the foundation year you will learn how computers are used by a broad range of people and organisations as well as acquiring fundamental software development skills and knowledge of hardware. You also gain relevant mathematical and statistical skills and develop useful communication skills.

BSc Computer Science

You’ll gain an understanding of the key principles of computer science while you develop your programming, system engineering, and project experience skills. Covering everything from human behaviour and molecular neurobiology to psychiatric disorders and neurogenetics, our BSc Neuroscience gives you the specialist skillset to start your career.

Set in cutting-edge bioanalytical facilities our neuroscience degree will give you an opportunity to study and practice your new skills through both on campus (subject to availability in light of Covid 19) and on line learning.

Guided by our teaching staff – who are leading researchers in cognitive psychology, neuropsychology and neuroscience – you’ll explore a range of disciplines as you enhance your understanding of the function and dysfunction of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. You’ll also learn how to carry out a range of specialist procedures and techniques that are used for both research and diagnosis. This will be support by a range of online and on campus teaching, the latter dependent on availability as a result of the Covid 19 outbreak.

Develop your hands-on experience

• Our recently revamped bioanalytical laboratories give you access to the next generation of scientific instrumentation for molecular analysis – which is in line with the new focus on protein-hunting in scientific research. On campus experiences will be subject to ongoing and future restrictions as a result of the Covid 19 outbreak.
• With the help of our expert teaching staff, you’ll get to grips with specialist procedures such as psychophysiological monitoring, electroencephalography (EEG) and brain imaging techniques.
• By providing you a specialist skillset that applies to a variety of careers in science and non-science sectors, our neuroscience course opens up career opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry, clinical research, academia and teaching. It also gives you an ideal foundation for further study in areas such as drug development, neurone and glial cell culture, and molecular neuroscience.

You will enrol on a four-year course which includes the one-year foundation year. The number of students who progress to degree study is very high. The Foundation Year in Performing Arts is taught in our excellent studios and facilities at our Hendon campus by the same lecturing staff who teach on our degree courses. BA International Tourism Management (Spanish)

Our multi-disciplinary biomedical engineering course mixes engineering with biomedical science and physiology. This provides you with a solid understanding of the technological developments taking place in the fields of medical engineering and bioengineering.

You will build on your previous experience in applied mathematics, physics, or other sciences. During your course you will enhance your engineering knowledge and gain specialist skills which will help you to design and improve existing and emergent systems, devices and treatments.

Our degree has been specifically designed to meet the standards set by the collaboration between the UK Quality Assurance Agency and the Engineering Council alongside the demands of healthcare providers. You can gain valuable professional experience – and receive a Diploma of Employability Studies – by taking a work placement with the NHS or one of our industrial partners between years two and three.

Develop your understanding of criminal behaviour
During the course, when possible, you’ll learn in our award-winning Hatchcroft Building which includes the state-of-the-art facilities you would expect, including psycho-physiology, observation, and virtual reality laboratories. Even in eventualities where we are unable to be in the laboratory or classroom together, we aim to use virtual tools to help you develop key practical skills.

You’ll build up a range of skills by examining theoretical and scientific approaches to criminology, human behaviour, and psychology. You’ll also gain understanding of the psychological issues associated with criminal behaviour and the treatment of people who have committed criminal offences.

During your degree, you’ll take part in work placements with forensic psychologists, police forces, prisons and hospitals so you can build up a portfolio of professional experience. You can expect to engage in activities like running anger management courses for prisoners, while you also perform clinical research in areas such as eating disorders and autism, among others.

Studying BSc Medical Biochemistry with us will introduce you to new ideas and products that are applied to some of the biggest health problems of today. How you’ll practise your skills

• Our course is unique among other medical biochemistry degrees because we focus on getting you work experience throughout your time with us. You’ll have the option of taking a year-long industry placement that’ll help you develop your transferable skills. We also have a work experience module that’ll allow you to increase your chances of employment and practice working in the scientific field. Workplace learning is under the control of our employer partners who may need to restrict access to placement learning in light of the ongoing Covid 19 outbreak.
