Studying BSc Medical Biochemistry with us will introduce you to new ideas and products that are applied to some of the biggest health problems of today. You’ll study the subject with a focus on human biology and medicine. Core themes will include chemistry, immunology, and molecular biology. There are two honour degree programmes to choose from - one is a three-year Bachelor of Science (BSc), and the other is a four-year Master of Science (MSci).

We’ll teach you how to think like a biochemist. You’ll develop essential research, diagnostic, and laboratory skills. The wide range of academic and professional skills gained on this course will prepare you for different career paths within the field. You can choose from working within a hospital or private labs in the health sector, research institutions, and pharmaceutical and biotech industries. You’ll have the chance to pursue your interests with optional modules and individual assignments.

You’ll study in some of the UK’s best laboratories, equipped with cutting-edge technology. Our £36 million Hatchcroft Building houses the bioscience suite, the cell and tissue culture lab, the mass spectrometry and medical engineering labs, to name just a few. You’ll have access to all the latest equipment you need to develop your skills and launch a career. Access to the labs is dependent upon any restrictions resultant from the ongoing Covid 19 outbreak.

How you’ll practise your skills

• Our course is unique among other medical biochemistry degrees because we focus on getting you work experience throughout your time with us. You’ll have the option of taking a year-long industry placement that’ll help you develop your transferable skills. We also have a work experience module that’ll allow you to increase your chances of employment and practice working in the scientific field. Workplace learning is under the control of our employer partners who may need to restrict access to placement learning in light of the ongoing Covid 19 outbreak.
• You’ll learn through a series of computer-based sessions, practically focused learnings, and workshops. This mixed learning style will ensure you’re practising your skills in hypothesis formation, data collection, analysis, and interpretation as you learn. In addition, you’ll get the chance to become a member of the Middlesex Biochemical Society and gain experience as part of different research groups.

Our multi-disciplinary biomedical engineering course mixes engineering with biomedical science and physiology. This provides you with a solid understanding of the technological developments taking place in the fields of medical engineering and bioengineering.

You will build on your previous experience in applied mathematics, physics, or other sciences. During your course you will enhance your engineering knowledge and gain specialist skills which will help you to design and improve existing and emergent systems, devices and treatments.

Our degree has been specifically designed to meet the standards set by the collaboration between the UK Quality Assurance Agency and the Engineering Council alongside the demands of healthcare providers. You’ll gain specialist biomedical engineering skills to follow in the footsteps of graduates who’ve forged careers in clinical engineering, biomechanics, orthotics and prosthetics.

Develop your biomedical engineering skills

• We have fully equipped, state-of-the-art laboratories for medical device design and human performance measurement. You will also have access to the facilities in ourbioengineering and physics research laboratories. It is here that we’re making significant healthcare developments, which include the monitoring of premature babies, deep brain stimulation and the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
• You can gain valuable professional experience – and receive a Diploma of Employability Studies – by taking a work placement with the NHS or one of our industrial partners between years two and three.
• Our highly experienced team of professional engineers and qualified healthcare practitioners are on hand to give you the support you need to succeed in your studies and establish your career in biomedical engineering.
• If you are applying for our four-year MEng biomedical engineering degree, you will not only be able to gain an integrated masters qualification once you’ve completed the fourth year of the degree, you will also be able to receive student loan funding to cover your course fees.  Continuation on the MEng degree is subject to you achieving a good academic profile in years one and two.
• Biomedical engineering studies gives you the ultimate stepping-stone to a number of global career opportunities in a rapidly expanding field. You will graduate from our course with career options in a variety of sections, including  clinical or rehabilitation engineering, bioinstrumentation, biomaterials, biomechanics, and medical imaging.

You enrol on a four-year course, which includes the one-year foundation course. If you complete this year successfully you progress directly onto one of our three-year degree courses in these subject areas. The number of students who progress to degree study are very high - in fact some of these students have gone on to become some of our most successful graduates.

BA Sociology with Psychology

Nursing can be a rewarding and flexible career you can shape according to your interests. Once you graduate and become a registered children’s nurse you can choose to specialise, pursuing paths like neonatal intensive care, oncology, and even opting to become a school nurse.

Not all nutrition courses take a holistic approach to the subject. Our BSc Nutrition programme is interdisciplinary in its approach, exploring the link between diet, health, disease and performance. As nutritionists play a key role in creating and translating research into nutritional advice and policies, you’ll learn all about how the human body uses nutrients and the effects this has on health.

Beyond theoretical knowledge, our course will advance your employability by developing skills like communication, numeracy, research, team working, creative thinking, and more. Your new skills will be relevant in a variety of careers, especially dietician, nutritional therapist, and science writer. If you’d like to focus on nutrition directly after graduation you’ll have the chance to work as a nutritional advisor, food scientist, heath trainer, or sports nutritionist.

Typical employers of nutrition graduates include the NHS, Public Health England, food manufacturers, plus the catering and hospitality industry.

Learn to apply your skills

• Our course offers you the unique opportunity to undertake a 12-month placement in your third year before returning for a final year of study subject to availability in light of the Covid 19 pandemic. Completing the placement will mean you graduate with a BSc Nutrition (Professional Practice) degree, which highlights the additional practical skills you’ve gained to prospective employers. You’ll get plenty of support from our Employability Advisors, who’ll ensure you secure a placement that closely matches your interests.
• Members of the Nutrition Society have the option of taking advantage of its internship programme. Other potential placement opportunities include Unilever, GSK, sports clubs, NHS Primary Care Trusts, and Nestle.
• During your studies, you’ll use innovative technology to enhance your learning. You’ll be taught with a mixture of seminars, group and individual tutorials, and through laboratory classes to help you gain theoretical and practical knowledge of nutrition.

Our criminology degree is one of the first in the world and we offer one of the most innovative programmes in the UK. The BA Criminology (Policing and Investigations) shares its core with the BA Criminology, while offering a series of modules with a focus on contemporary policing and investigations, together with options for relevant practice-based placements (online or face-to-face).

Due to the evolving situation as regards COVID-19, some or all of the work placements and in-person visits we normally facilitate for our students may be suspended in the 2020/21 academic year.

The BA Criminology (Policing and Investigations) is not a pre-join degree for the police service, however the degree will allow you to apply for the accelerated Degree Holders Entry Programme, if you are interested in joining a UK police service after graduation.

To study criminology is to embark on a fascinating journey exploring the problem of crime. Learn about its causes and consequences, and investigating how society does and should respond to criminal behaviour in all its forms.
This degree provides an in-depth exploration of crime, criminals, victims and interaction with the Criminal Justice System. It's been designed for those who have an interest in how society responds to deviant behaviour and challenges the concept of social deviancy.

You'll focus on the theoretical concepts and approaches in criminology and their application to contemporary life through studying the impact of social divisions in minorities based on their experiences, interpretations, and representations of crime and criminal justice.

You'll be taught by staff currently involved in researching key issues related to crime and justice, and the findings of their research will influence your learning and research skills. As such, you'll learn to understand the factors that influence criminological research, policy and practice, and learn the fundamental skills of research and analysis.
