The central aim of the Philosophy major is to bring clarity and rigour to students’ thinking and to advance their understanding of, and ability to engage with, central questions, arguments, theories, and texts concerning the world and our place within it.

The Philosophy with Creative Writing BA (Hons) will teach you to write and analyse texts and arguments with clarity, rigour, and originality. The Philosophy major will give you the ability to engage with central questions, arguments, theories and texts concerning the world and our place within it. You’ll learn about the logic behind language and meaning, alongside studying topics such as ethics, metaphysics and aesthetics. The Creative Writing minor will enable you to express your philosophical judgements in a variety of forms, from short fiction to poetry to scriptwriting, as has been established practice in the history of philosophy.

Examine the practice and applications of history, and compare political institutions of different countries, analysing their legitimacy to dictate over their subjects. 

Your study of the History with Politics & International Relations BA (Hons) will provide a full understanding of how people have lived, and how states have attempted to shape and influence those lives throughout history. You will study periods from the Roman Empire through to modern day America, drawing on complex and often contradictory sources. You will also take courses examining the practice and applications of the historical discipline itself. In the Politics & IR minor, you’ll compare the political institutions of different countries, analysing their legitimacy to dictate over their subjects and how they interact with other organisations.

Our curriculum approaches the past in all its guises: economic, political, social, cultural and intellectual history.

You will study a diverse range of subject matters, from the Middle Ages to the modern day. You will study two survey courses; six increasingly focused period-specific courses, which encourage real intellectual depth; and one course reflecting on the nature of the discipline and equipping you with the skills to master it.

By choosing Art History as a minor you will have the opportunity to widen your view of history through the study of cultural artefacts, developing a greater understanding of the people and times that created them.  You will develop critical skills in how to look, to think, and to present your ideas succinctly and persuasively.

Our Economics with Law BSc (Hons) will provide you with a full understanding of the forces shaping the way we live. Studying Economics, you’ll engage with the structures that make for wealth and well-being, as well as learning the quantitative skills needed to engage with academic economics as commonly practised. In your Law studies, you will learn about the legal forces which constrain how individuals act, and which thus have an impact on the wider societal structures that you will study in Economics.

You’ll learn about the factors that dictate the real events and decisions that are taking place in the world today, as well as acquiring the quantitative skills needed to engage with the subject as commonly practised. In the Philosophy minor, you’ll engage with central questions, arguments and theories concerning our place in the world.

Explore world culture without geographical or temporal limits, from Europe to China and antiquity to the modern-day while developing an understanding of the social and cultural behaviours which underlie the development of art over time across the world. The Psychology minor explores fundamental principles, concepts, and issues in the major areas of contemporary scientific psychology, which informs your study of Art History by allowing you to dive into the social and cultural behaviours which underlie the development of art over time across the world.

The Law with Philosophy LLB (Hons) is a Qualifying Law Degree, covering all of the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority and Bar Standards Board required areas of study to permit progression onto the professional training courses for qualification as a solicitor or barrister.

The Law with Philosophy LLB (Hons) will allow you to prepare for your career and follow your passions. In your degree, you will take all of the courses required for a Qualifying Law Degree, preparing you to take the professional training courses for qualification as a solicitor or barrister. The study of Politics comprises political theory looking at normative questions, and political science looking at the organisation of government. International Relations examines governance, institution-building and decision-making through an analysis of historical phenomena, economic conditions, diplomatic relations, security and socio-cultural linkages among state and non-state sectors.
The Law minor aims to provide a thematic basis to academic legal studies which align to career paths that are attractive to alumni of the College, in particular, careers in which knowledge and understanding of corporate, commercial and employment matters are valuable; provide legal knowledge and skills.
