The English programme at NCH is intended to bring rigour to a student’s thinking, and advance students’ powers of engagement with both literary texts and the issues with which they engage. The central aim of the Politics and International Relations minor is to analyse the relationship between the individual and the state, and the sources of state authority and forms of government, by understanding resource distribution and value allocation.

The Politics & International Relations with Economics BSc will equip you to analyse political institutions and their actions effectively. You will take a course in political theory, and compare that with your knowledge of current political institutions and the real-life economic events and decisions which take place within them.

In Philosophy, you will consider how humans ought to interact with each other and the world and explore central philosophical arguments and questions throughout history. In the Politics & IR minor you will study how humans interact with each other, how they create their institutions, and the different bases societies find for state authority and legitimacy.

Your Art History minor will complement your major by training you to look closely at works of art, architecture and design, and to understand their aesthetic, cultural, and economic contexts.

The Art History with English BA (Hons) will allow you to study the full range of artistic expression. You’ll have the opportunity to interpret moments of history as manifested in works of art from antiquity to the contemporary, originating from as diverse cultures as Europe, China, and North America. Survey courses are combined with more media-specific subjects, such as architecture, landscapes, painting, and in English, a range of literary forms and critical responses to them.

The English with Art History BA (Hons) will allow you to study the full range of artistic expression. You’ll take courses covering literature from 1550 to the present day, and you’ll explore forms of literature such as political speeches, the plays of Shakespeare, and responses to them.  For your Art History minor, you’ll study different forms of visual art in detail and their aesthetic and cultural contexts. These studies will allow you to make connections between art and the literature you study for your English major.

The Law with Psychology LLB (Hons) is a Qualifying Law Degree, covering all of the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority and Bar Standards Board required areas of study to permit progression onto the professional training courses for qualification as a solicitor or barrister. Learn how English law is created, interpreted and developed while covering a range of areas such as criminal law, public law and contract law.
