Our Classics and Ancient History master's builds and expands on your previous studies. You can specialise in either classics or ancient history.

The course is primarily designed for students who have studied ancient history, classics or classical studies as their first degree.

Classics and ancient history at Newcastle has a long and distinguished reputation for its research and teaching. We've taught Latin and Greek since 1874, ancient history since 1910, and classical archaeology since 1931.

You can choose to study one of two pathways: Classics or Ancient History.

If you're interested in classics, you'll study literatures, languages and cultures of Ancient Greece and Rome at an advanced level.

If you specialise in ancient history, you'll focus on the histories, societies and cultures of:

• The wider Mediterranean world

Master up to three languages on our highly flexible Modern Languages degree course and prepare yourself for a career as an engaged, global citizen.

This four-year Modern Languages BA Honours degree immerses you in the study of foreign culture and society. Focusing on the development of your language skills in your chosen languages, you'll graduate with an appreciation for other cultures and multilingual skills sought by employers.

You'll study a broad curriculum covering the theory and practical application of chemical engineering, including how to use industrial apparatus in our very own pilot plant.

In your third year you spend a paid year in industry, gaining invaluable work experience and building industry contacts. You will work in a team of professional engineers and scientists to apply your knowledge to an industrial problem defined by your host company. Your technical skills will be assessed through an industrial design project and you complete selected chemical engineering topics by distance learning.

On return to University in your fourth year, you study a selection of topics that are tailored to further develop the technical expertise you gain on your placement.

Our MSc gives you an in-depth understanding of geotechnical engineering. It covers topics associated with:

Advanced geotechnical specialisms are also taught. These include the application of state-of-the art computational tools in design and the engineering of specialist earth structures such as tailing dams.

This research-focused Media and Journalism MA develops your cultural understanding, and critical analysis. It introduces the content production skills needed for global media industries.

The Media and Journalism MA is designed for new graduates and experienced journalists. If you're planning a career in journalism and related occupations, or to progress to a PhD, this course is for you.

It provides an international context and is suitable for students from across the globe.

The course is flexible and you can tailor it towards professional media and journalism practice or academic engagement. You don't need a media background to join this course.

Course overview

This Civil and Structural Engineering with Year in Industry degree focuses on developing your specialist knowledge and skills of structural engineering. You'll also gain the practical experience you need to pursue a career as a civil engineer.

You'll develop real-world experience – both at University and while on your industry placement in Stage 3 – through our design-intensive programme, hands-on work in our specialist facilities and experience working directly in the sector.

Focusing on the design of bridges, buildings and other structures, you'll become a well-rounded engineer. You'll have an understanding of critical civil engineering topics, such as: an introduction to architecture, sustainable engineering systems, and construction management.

Data Visualisation is an increasingly important part of data science. It aims to bridge the gap between the human and data. It supports human perception and cognition to make sense of data analytics outputs.

We created the PGDip, PGCert, MSc Data Science with Specialisation in Visualisation in collaboration with a number of high profile industry leaders. It aims to address the skills shortage in data analytics.

Our master's in data science brings together students and industry practitioners to develop and translate new technologies into industry practice.
