The course covers key areas of knowledge and professional practice which reflect the way journalists work today. However, journalism’s role in society, how we do journalism, and careers in journalism is constantly transforming. This master's in journalism is a ‘laboratory of inquiry’. It will prepare you to negotiate these changes through your career in journalism or the wider fields of professional communication.

You spend two-thirds of your time studying mathematics and statistics, and one-third studying topics in accountancy and corporate finance in Newcastle University Business School.

Alongside core modules from our mathematics and statistics programmes, you will take specialist topics with financial applications, such as financial modelling.

This is complemented by corporate finance modules, including interpreting company accounts and international finance management.

If you don't have mathematics and/or science at the appropriate level to apply for our Engineering degrees, this course is for you. If you have proven ability in other subjects, it gives you the opportunity to develop the knowledge you need to apply to an engineering degree here.

This course is also appropriate if you have technical or vocational qualifications or are from a different educational system.

Control Systems Stream

You'll gain a thorough understanding of key areas, including:

• AC and DC electric drives systems
• Analyse and design control systems for a wide range of electric drive applications
• Construct and critically test drive simulation studies in the area of control of electric drives
• Gain insight and advanced understanding of modern controller design, emerging intelligent control methods, and mitigation techniques for problems associated in real-life design

Mechatronics Stream

Focusing on the systems and design aspects of mechatronics you'll:

• Gain knowledge and understanding of the operating characteristics and design of a range of sensors and motors. This includes their integration into appropriate control systems within a specific mechanical design
• Understand key mechatronic concepts and their specific applications to the robust design of mobile robotic systems. This will provide you with skills to design, develop and operate a functional mobile robot mechatronic system

Our master's in International Development and Education uses a multidisciplinary approach to international development. It considers contemporary global change through various perspectives, including:

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) run through the modules. This provides a contemporary stance on where the world stands today at building a better world for people and our planet by 2030. The lecturers on this master's in International Development and Education are experts in the field. They advise on policy around global challenges.

This programme follows the same programme as our Marine Technology with Naval Architecture BEng Honours degree. It focuses on developing skills across all aspects of the design and operation of ships and other large floating structures. You'll gain a broad engineering education. This equips you with key engineering skills engineers apply to industry-specific problems. This accredited degree also provides a direct route to Chartered Engineer status.

You'll have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge in advanced topics of naval architecture during your third and fourth year. You'll specialise in a field that interests you. This enables you to graduate in your chosen specialism tailored to your career of choice. Specialisms include:

In Year 4 you'll develop your technical and professional-standard skills. This will be through a final group design project.
