Our professionally accredited Marine Engineering degrees provide a pathway to becoming a Chartered Engineer and prepare you to face challenges associated with the various specialisms.

This foundation year will help you build the base knowledge you need to progress to any of our marine technology BEng degrees.

This is a full-time programme of study covering core mechanical engineering topics, including:

• Foundation mathematics
• Applied mechanics
• Material science

This Civil and Structural Engineering with Year in Industry MEng degree focuses on developing your specialist knowledge, practical experience and skills of structural engineering. It also provides a direct route to chartered engineer status, so you graduate prepared for your future career.

You'll develop real-world experience – both at University and while on your industry placement in Stage 3 – through our design-intensive programme, hands-on work in our specialist facilities and experience working directly in the sector.

Focusing on the design of bridges, buildings and other structures, you'll become a well-rounded engineer. You'll have an understanding of critical civil engineering topics, such as: sustainable engineering systems, and construction management.

You'll also study in advanced structural engineering fields, like seismic-resistant design, unique and unusual structures and structural reliability and analysis.

Our MArch Architecture is designed to help you define the kind of architect you want to be. You can tailor your portfolio towards the practices in which you want to work or areas in which you want to demonstrate your expertise.

It is a modular MArch based on design project work. Lectures and seminars examine the theoretical, practical and material dimensions of architecture.

Through the course you'll:

• Develop an appreciation of design as a collective cultural endeavour involving the acquisition and exercise of complex knowledge and skills
• Learn to think and act critically. You'll think harder and deeper about architecture, what it can achieve and what you can do with it
• Define the kind of architect you want to be
• Tailor your portfolio towards the practices in which you want to work or areas in which you want to demonstrate expertise
• Develop the knowledge and skills necessary to work in the architectural profession with an independent, research-led attitude towards design

Biology and geography are an important part of this degree, to help you to understand the processes within ecosystems and how we can manage our natural resources effectively.

You will also study chemistry, physics and geology as applied to the study of the environment. Topics cover a wide range of subjects, from plant biology and ecology, to sustainability and environmental law.

You'll learn about the role of social and economic factors, ethics and public perception in environmental management.

BSc or MEnvSci?
Some of our degrees are offered at two levels:

• Three-year Bachelor of Science (BSc)
• Four-year Master in Environmental Science (MEnvSci)

Our MEnvSci degrees include an additional year of advanced study at master’s level, where you will gain additional research and practical experience to increase your employability and have the opportunity to work alongside our world-leading experts.

This three-year degree equips you with the knowledge base and practical skills of a sociologist. You'll be trained to think about the world with a clarity that employers value.

You will explore cutting-edge sociological theories and research to understand social life, the way the social world works and how it can be changed for the better. You will gain a solid understanding of sociology and learn from leading research that addresses various contemporary societal challenges, such as refugees and displacement, multiculturalism and British identity.

A wide variety of optional modules will allow you to focus on topics that suit your interests and career plans, from childhood, race and ethnicity, class and sexuality, to educational inequalities in a global age.

The International Relations pathway is a specialism on the Cross-Cultural Communication MA. It lets you study international relations with intercultural communication. You'll gain a comprehensive grounding in the approaches to understanding contemporary international politics and society.

Academic staff in politics from the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology deliver this specialist pathway.

This three-year joint honours English Language and Literature BA Honours degree develops your knowledge of the history of English and how it's used. You'll gain an insight into literature from medieval England to the present day, while also investigating the structure and development of the English language and its many uses today.

You'll learn from subject experts, world-leading researchers in literature and linguistics throughout your degree programme.

You'll be able to immerse yourself in local culture at venues such as Seven Stories, The Wordsworth Trust and the Literary and Philosophical Society.

Developing your knowledge of the scientific methodologies used to study the English language, you'll become a confident professional with a range of valuable skills applicable to fields across language and literature.

This four-year degree focuses on developing both your business and language skills, so you graduate ready for a fast-paced career in a global and complex business environment.

You'll gain core business skills, in human resource management, finance and strategy. Language proficiency is integral to this degree and you can choose from Chinese, French, German or Spanish.

During the third year of your degree, you'll be studying or working abroad, giving you the opportunity to improve your language skills, while also experiencing another culture.

You'll leave University as a proficient linguist, equipped with the skills, knowledge and experience needed for a management career in international, multinational, or global organisations.

We place a particular emphasis on the scientific study of livestock and companion animals (including horses). You'll study subjects that reflect the whole life of an animal:

• Microbiology and biochemistry
• Animal health and behaviour
• Animal reproduction and nutrition

We bring your learning to life through extensive interaction with animals throughout your degree. You'll gain practical experience through regular visits to local animal centres and the University's two farms. You'll also enjoy input from professionals in the animal science industry.

Your third year group project to organise a conference on animal science equips you with marketable skills such as project management, organisation and teamworking.

You can boost your employability and professional skills with an optional placement year in industry, or a summer internship in the commercial sector.

An exciting part of your degree is your research project, where you undertake a piece of original research on a subject of your choice. This may be carried out in the lab, at one of the University's farms or at an animal centre. You also have the chance to study and learn alongside staff in the Animal Science research group, who are internationally recognised for their research.

Our master's inInternational Development and Education with Cross Cultural Communication uses a multidisciplinary approach to international development. It considers contemporary global change through various perspectives, including:

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) run through the modules. This provides a contemporary stance on where the world stands today at building a better world for people and our planet by 2030. You'll gain an understanding of and explore current debates around how education contributes to the development process.

Learning through case studies will cultivate your ability to think critically about development issues. You'll explore data using secondary sources. You'll also carry out your own research study through our unique placement module. This extends your learning into the field of development and education. This hands-on experience is an opportunity to co-create and co-develop impactful change.
