The Bioinformatics MSc combines foundational skills in bioinformatics with specialist skills in computing programming, molecular biology and research methods.

Our MSc Bioinformatics is unique and interdisciplinary. It draws together highly-rated teaching and research expertise from across the University. It equips you for a successful career in the bioinformatics industry or academia.

We've designed this MSc Bioinformatics for students from both biological science and computational backgrounds. Prior experience with computer programming is not needed. We welcome applications from those with mathematical, engineering or other scientific backgrounds.

Our course structure is highly flexible and you can tailor it to your own skills and interests.

Research is a large component of this course. Our emphasis is on delivering the research training you'll need to meet the demands of industry and academia now and in the future. Our research in bioinformatics, life sciences, computing and mathematics is internationally recognised. The School of Computing has an active research community. We have several research groups and three research centres.

All four courses share core modules. This creates a tight-knit cohort. It encourages collaborations on projects undertaking interdisciplinary research.

This Urban Planning degree focuses on the built environment and how it’s developed. You'll develop a thorough understanding of planning processes, design awareness and housing policy so you're equipped to pursue a career in town planning.

The course draws on Newcastle’s rich history, including the rise and decline of industry and its more recent cultural renaissance. You will undertake projects that address real-life planning situations and challenges, taking you out into the city and beyond. Study visits in Stage 2 also offer opportunities for international exploration and comparison.

You'll study topics such as design awareness, environmental sustainability and housing policy, and participate in a range of field trips and projects to see planning in action. You can specialise in subjects such as global poverty, the design of urban spaces, the effect of digital tools on democracy and how we plan for mega projects and the unknown.

Medicinal Chemistry is the discovery, design and synthesis of new clinical drugs.

Our MChem degree follows the normal BSc curriculum, plus a further year of advanced study. The MChem programme is perfect for those pursuing a career within scientific research.

This three-year Politics and Economics degree will give you the intellectual capacity to recognise, understand and anticipate the way that political and economic forces combine to shape our everyday lives.

You will study at both the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology and the Business School, tapping into their combined expertise, networks, support, careers advice and facilities, and becoming part of two flourishing student communities.

Your studies will be split 50:50 between politics and economics, with each helping to inform your understanding of the other. The course also has a strong mathematical component to help you master the unique quantitative requirements of the economic discipline.

Our Banking and Finance degree will:

Chemical Engineering MEng Honours is a four-year degree. It focuses on developing your knowledge and skills across many chemical engineering topics. Its aim is to provide a direct route to becoming a Chartered Chemical Engineer (CEng). This is one of the industry's most recognisable international qualifications.

You'll deepen your knowledge in more advanced topics during your fourth year. You'll specialise in a field that interests you. This enables you to graduate in your chosen specialism tailored to your career of choice. Specialisms include:

BEng or MEng?
Both our BEng degree and specialist MEng degrees provide a pathway to becoming a Chartered Engineer. This is one of the most recognisable international engineering qualifications.

Our MEng degrees are a direct route to becoming a Chartered Engineer (CEng). You don’t need to study any more qualifications after your degree to work towards chartered status.

Our three-year BEng degree can also lead to Chartered Engineer status. However, you’ll need to complete further study, such as an approved master’s degree.

This four-year Linguistics with French degree concentrates on developing your understanding of how languages function, how we communicate and the growth of language in the brain. You'll explore linguistics in the context of English and French language. You will build a firm foundation of skills and knowledge to pursue many career paths.

Building your fluency in French alongside your study of linguistics will give you a unique perspective on the language. You will study French from intermediate or advanced level depending on your previous experience.
