This course has the broadest range of subjects of all our chemistry courses. In the first two years, you’ll study an introduction to all areas of chemistry, gaining the practical and theoretical skills needed to design experiments and test hypotheses. This includes understanding the theories of chemical behaviour and how they're applied.

Our course brings together architectural design and engineering so you can create spaces that are practical and sustainable as well as beautiful. You'll learn how to design buildings with low-carbon footprints and a focus on comfortable and healthy living. There is a need for trained professionals who know how to reduce the environmental impact of construction. We'll help you develop your design and technical skills throughout the course to meet this need. You’ll apply engineering principles and your understanding of how people use buildings to come up with building design solutions. Our course is for creative engineers who want to develop a holistic approach to designing buildings and structures. As a graduate, your imaginative approaches, ingenuity and communication skills will help you develop responsible solutions for the engineering challenges you will face.

In your first two years, you will learn the foundations of materials, geotechnics, structures and digital design. Once you have developed your fundamental engineering design skills, you will then explore aspects of sustainable building and structural design in later years.

Our courses draw on the strengths of a joint department with architecture, offering you a different experience from most universities. You’ll work with architecture students to prepare you for the professional relationships you'll experience in your career.

At Bath, you will have the opportunity to experience studio-based projects and gain insight from industrial guest lecturers, preparing you to tackle the range of structural engineering projects you will meet in your career.

We also offer this course with a placement year, giving you the opportunity to gain work experience as part of your degree. You can move between our Civil Engineering and Structural and Architectural Engineering courses, as well as decide whether you want to go on placement, up to the end of your second year.

Placement Year

Going on placement gives you the chance to apply the skills you’ve developed at university to the workplace, and gain complementary skills and knowledge. You’ll gain insight into the construction industry and develop your confidence and standing as an engineer. Having professional experience can benefit the rest of your degree and improve your career prospects. You’ll gain a solid foundation in chemistry with a focus on how drugs and medicines are designed and made, how they work and why they’re successful. Major pharmaceutical companies have contributed to the design of the course so you can be sure your studies will be relevant for industry. You’ll develop in-depth knowledge of the drug design process, and the skills to carry out experimental and computational drug discovery projects.

Understand the foundations of aerospace engineering science and explore the latest thinking in aircraft design and manufacture.

The first two years of this course give you a detailed understanding of core mechanical engineering principles. You’ll learn how to use mathematics and computing to assess engineering systems, and develop knowledge in design and manufacturing processes.

You’ll study aircraft performance, control and structures, aerodynamics, propulsion and helicopter aerodynamics. Lectures are balanced with laboratory work to give you the skills you need to build, analyze and test a product. So that you can develop a full understanding of aircraft from design to manufacture, you’ll visit an aerospace manufacturing company and take a flight test course at a local airfield.

In your final year, you’ll choose from a range of specialist units and complete an individual research project that could be based on simulation, experimentation or design.

Studying an MEng gives you an in-depth study experience through advanced taught units and project work, and it fulfills the educational requirements you need to become a Chartered Engineer. You have the flexibility to transfer to any of our five mechanical engineering courses up until the end of your second year. Do you aspire to contribute to the future of an expanding industry in engineering? Our course will help you do this by advancing your knowledge of robotics, artificial intelligence and electronics systems at the forefront of engineering and design.

In your first two years, you'll learn core elements of electronic, electrical and mechanical engineering. A you'll combine this with aspects of computer science, giving you a comprehensive overview of robotics engineering. You'll be supported by, and benefit from, academic staff who are advancing research in our Centre for Autonomous Robotics (CENTAUR).

To become a skilled engineer, you need good technical design knowledge. That’s why our course places project work at the centre of your learning experience. Group projects challenge you to work in teams to solve practical engineering problems using communication, teamwork and management skills. You can also join one of our student teams who compete annually. These include Team Bath Racing Electric, Team Bath Drones and the autonomous underwater systems team.

You’ll graduate with a strong understanding of the operation, components and design techniques of robotics engineering. Your studies will prepare you for a career in robotics and automation in areas such as robotic systems design, autonomous systems and medical robotics.
