This course combines science, social science and public health. Through learning about how the human body works, you will understand the impact that physical activity, diet and other lifestyle choices have on health and wellbeing.

This degree has three core themes running throughout the course:

• Exercise Science provides a fundamental, interdisciplinary understanding of human function
• Behavioural Medicine explores how we can use the principles of exercise science to promote health, or treat and prevent disease
• Public Health investigates the determinants of population health, focusing particularly on the role of physical activity and lifestyle in the health of a population

Through these core themes you will apply your knowledge to health and exercise settings and understand their relevance in current practice.

Develop specialist knowledge in machine learning, statistics and software technology for a solid grounding in the theory and practice of data science.

Data science drives a significant proportion of global economic activity from healthcare to finance and technology. It's influencing scientific progress across numerous fields including bioscience, energy and telecommunications. This course provides you with the tools and strong mathematical foundation to become an industry expert. You'll gain an understanding of the balanced combination of science and technology required for delivering effective data science.

Vital in addressing global health and environmental challenges, biochemistry explores the chemical processes of living organisms at a molecular level.

Combine your interests in biology and chemistry by applying chemical knowledge and techniques to study biological processes. You’ll learn what’s happening inside cells, how they communicate with each other, and use this to predict how molecules will interact.

Tailor to your interests

In year one you’ll gain a broad grounding in biosciences to help work out where your interests lie. Then from year two, you'll choose optional units in specific areas, such as developmental biology, genomics, neuroscience, cancer biology and microbiology.

And to keep your options open further, you'll even have the flexibility to switch between our biology and biochemistry courses after the first year.

On this degree you’ll combine the study of politics with an engagement in economic theory and practice. It will appeal if you’re interested in issues of global power, decision-making, democracy and inequality.

You’ll cover topics such as international politics, political ideologies and economic thought. You will explore a range of contemporary economic and political challenges facing national and international society, such as terrorism and climate change.

In your first year you'll focus on concepts and theories relating to both politics and international relations. You'll study economic theory and methodology, and explore contemporary political and economic systems.

In your second year you'll advance your knowledge in political and economic theory. You can focus your studies through optional units covering areas from global responses to international environmental crises, to the nature of UK Parliamentary politics. You'll also develop your skills in research design and methods.

You’ll carry out a year-long dissertation and select optional units relating to your interests in politics and economics, with themes such as financialisation, inter-state relations, and gender politics.

Placement Year

The placement year is an opportunity for you to use the theory you have learnt in a practical context. You will learn about an organization and its area of work. This is an excellent opportunity to test potential career paths. Sometimes permanent jobs are offered to our students.

Explore the intersection of gender and politics on one of the only master’s in the UK focused on these two subjects combined.

With gender at last being given centre stage as a political issue, now is a particularly interesting time to be looking at politics and gender in combination.

Delving into this fascinating area, this MA will give you a deep insight into issues related to gender and the contemporary world.

You’ll explore how gender intersects with politics, international relations, political theory and public policy.

Other topics covered include the politics of gender inequality, and the part gender can play in the peace and reconciliation of countries; and gender in political representation, and the steps needed to make electoral organizations more gender-equal.

You’ll be joining a well-established team of academics specializing in gender and politics. We have a growing Gender and Sexuality Research Group at the University.

This is also currently one of the only MA courses in the UK focusing specifically on politics and gender, giving you a stand-out qualification.

As well as a compelling set of master’s level skills, you will gain a deep understanding of how gender is approached in politics across national and international spheres, putting you in a strong position for a policy-making career.

This course is for you if you’re keen to learn about current Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, specialising in this field from the start of your degree whilst still gaining a broad grounding in computer science. This course has the broadest range of subjects of all our chemistry courses. In the first two years, you’ll study an introduction to all areas of chemistry, gaining the practical and theoretical skills needed to design experiments and test hypotheses. This includes understanding the theories of chemical behaviour and how they're applied.

Integrate structural, architectural and environmental principles to advance the creative and sustainable design of our built environment.

Our course is for creative engineers who want to develop a holistic approach to designing buildings and structures. As a graduate, your imaginative approaches, ingenuity and communication skills will help you develop responsible solutions for the engineering challenges you will face.

In your first two years, you will learn the foundations of materials, geotechnics, structures and digital design. Once you have developed your fundamental engineering design skills, you will then explore aspects of sustainable building and structural design in later years.

Our courses draw on the strengths of a joint department with architecture, offering you a different experience from most universities. You’ll work with architecture students to prepare you for the professional relationships you'll experience in your career.

At Bath, you will have the opportunity to experience studio-based projects and gain insight from industrial guest lecturers, preparing you to tackle the range of structural engineering projects you will meet in your career.

We also offer this course with a placement year, giving you the opportunity to gain work experience as part of your degree. You can move between our Civil Engineering and Structural and Architectural Engineering courses, as well as decide whether you want to go on placement, up to the end of your second year.

Placement Year

Going on placement gives you the chance to apply the skills you’ve developed at university to the workplace, and gain complementary skills and knowledge. You’ll gain insight into the construction industry and develop your confidence and standing as an engineer.
