Tailor to your interests

In the first year, you’ll learn core skills in mathematics and programming and the foundations of artificial intelligence, software design and development, interaction design, computer graphics and vision. More advanced and specialised units follow in the second and final years. In the second year, you'll complete a group project with other students to design and build an interactive application.

In the final year, you'll choose optional units alongside an individual project combining your interests in a specific area of computer science. You’ll regularly meet with an academic who specialises in your chosen field.

This degree has a strong global focus. You’ll explore crime and related topics from around the world, including human rights and terrorism, social justice, contemporary social problems, and the globalisation of crime.

You’ll develop an in-depth knowledge of how the various components of the criminal justice system work, from the police through to prison and probation. As well as a strong theoretical grounding, the course is designed to equip you with practical skills in critical enquiry, research and data generation.

In your first two years, you’ll develop a detailed understanding of mechanical engineering. You’ll use mathematics and computing to analyse engineering systems and study design and manufacturing processes. Specialist units encourage you to take a hands-on approach to engineering design. You’ll work with other students in studios, labs and workshops to experiment with design and production. ‘Design-make-test’ activities give you practical experience of designing, building and testing prototypes.

Placement Year

A placement gives you first-hand knowledge of working in a commercial or industrial environment and can count towards becoming a Chartered Engineer. The professional skills you learn can benefit the rest of your degree and improve your career prospects. It can also be an opportunity to earn a salary during your degree and make industry contacts.

Over half of our students choose to take a placement but you can decide whether this is right for you up until your second year. Placement opportunities cannot be guaranteed but you will receive tailored support from our specialist team to help you secure a placement.

In this course, you’ll examine the challenges facing individuals, countries and the international community. You will develop an understanding of government and society through core concepts such as power, justice, conflict, accountability, obligation, sovereignty and decision making. You will develop strong analytical skills which will aid your understanding of the institutional, UK and global context within which economic decisions and policy formation takes place.

In your first year you'll study key concepts in microeconomic and macroeconomic theory. You'll explore political theory and analysis, introducing central subjects such as power and the state, democracy and the climate crisis.

In your second year you'll continue with more advanced study of political and economic theory. You'll study the exercise of power in societies and economies through an engagement with themes such as democratic theory, populist and nationalist politics, and the politics of race and gender.

In your final year you'll explore your interests through a range of optional units in both economics and politics.

The MSc Sport Management has been co-developed by the Department for Health and the School of Management. Through the course, you'll cover the diverse theories and methods relevant to the Sport Management industry. The course will draw upon expertise from industry partners to deliver content with real-world application.

You'll also cover core management concepts and practices focusing on the types of business involved in sport and exercise provision.

Working with civil engineering students develops your understanding of the technical aspects of designing structures. Your study experience at Bath will be distinct from that offered by most other universities in the UK. You’ll go on two placements (lasting between three to six months) as part of your four-year degree to help you on your journey to becoming a qualified Architect. You could also have the opportunity to study abroad as part of a student exchange agreement.

Placement Year

We blend architectural studies with professional experience to help you get the best out of your degree. Our course integrates two placements (lasting between three to six months) into the second semesters of year 2 and year 3, making it easier for you to develop and transfer your skills between study and placement. You'll be able to apply your university learning in a practical context and use your placement experience to improve the architectural skills you’ll use later in your course.

Our students benefit from work experience gained in many of the leading architectural practices in the UK and other countries. You could go on placement in practices like FCB Studios, Foster and Partners, Grimshaw Architects or Roger Stirk Harbour + Partners.

Placement

In year four of your degree, you’ll undertake an extensive research project, studying alongside researchers in the Department or on a 12-week placement with an international partner organisation. There are placement opportunities available in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Brazil.
