Overview
Study the theory and practice of preserving historic architecture and cultural heritage sites in one of the world's most culturally significant cities.
We offer you the unique opportunity to learn how to design and manage conservation projects while studying in a UNESCO World Heritage site. Taught by experts in the field, our course focuses on preserving historic buildings and cultural heritage worldwide. You’ll learn philosophical approaches to conserving the built environment and its significance within the context of international standards and charters, and English legislation frameworks. You’ll also explore materials, techniques, traditional constructional principles and structural behaviour.
To learn about conservation in practice, you’ll visit and work on case studies at historic buildings sites in and around Bath. These help you understand how our built heritage is repaired and re-used, and develop your technical and communication skills. You’ll finish your master’s degree with a large research project in an area of conservation that excites you.

Understand the foundations of aerospace engineering science and explore the latest thinking in aircraft design and manufacture.
The first two years of this course give you a detailed understanding of core mechanical engineering principles. You’ll learn how to use mathematics and computing to assess engineering systems, and develop knowledge in design and manufacturing processes.
You’ll study aircraft performance, control and structures, aerodynamics, propulsion and helicopter aerodynamics. Lectures are balanced with laboratory work to give you the skills you need to build, analyze and test a product. So that you can develop a full understanding of aircraft from design to manufacture, you’ll visit an aerospace manufacturing company and take a flight test course at a local airfield.
At Bath, we focus on giving you opportunities to apply what you’ve learnt through practical project work. This is to help you develop the set of skills needed by professional engineers. Research Placement
As an MPhys student, you’ll be able to undertake a research placement in the final year of the course. You’ll spend six months (July to December) working in a research organisation of international standing, before returning to the University for the final semester. We have links with leading research organisations, including CERN, NTT Basic Research Laboratories (Japan), European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (France) and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.
