Overview

Our BA Comparative Literatures and Cultures degree offers an unmatched opportunity to study international cultural production in both depth and breadth. You will study global literatures and cultures in comparative frameworks that draw on methodologies from textual, cultural and visual studies, as well as from translation, philosophy, history, social science and critical theory. Texts will be read in English translation.

Core units in years one and two currently include: What is Comparative Literature and How Do We Practise It?; Introduction to Visual Cultures; Popular Representation and Institutions of Culture; Migrations of Culture. Additionally, you will have a wide choice of optional units based in the culture of a single language or a combination of cultures.

You will spend your third year in a Spanish-speaking country, where you will undertake university study, a British Council assistantship or a work placement. You will follow a programme of study in Spanish, developing linguistic skills enabling you to communicate easily in writing and orally. In year four you will complete an innovative supervised independent project, consisting of an extended essay on a topic of your choice and a public-facing element presented to the entire cohort (e.g. prospectus, interview, museum catalogue entries, newspaper article).

You will be taught by experts in the field and teaching is informed by staff research interests. The course is delivered in varied ways through lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops and one-to-one supervision. You will participate in small-group teaching and may be asked to give introductory talks to initiate discussion.

This course encourages attributes highly valued by employers, including intercultural understanding, analytical and critical thinking, clarity and self confidence in communication, an aptitude for collaborative work, and creativity. In the Department of Film and Television, guided by leading scholars and practitioners, you will explore the history of film and television, considering theoretical perspectives and appreciating how films are made. You will also engage in practical filmmaking.

The curriculum progresses from introductory units, which use specific topics to teach you how to analyse film and television, to more advanced units. These cover significant historical movements, contemporary practices and the theoretical concepts that underpin, inform and shape film and television.

Our BA Classics degree focuses on the study and appreciation of a wide spectrum of Greek and Latin literature. Languages are taught at all levels, from absolute beginner onward. Some classes concentrate on building and developing language and translation skills; others focus on literary criticism and engagement with the text.

In the first two years you will study both Greek and Latin language and literature as well as choosing from optional units on a wide range of topics, including Graeco-Roman literature, philosophy and art. There is the possibility of studying abroad for one semester in the second year.

In your third year you will continue to study at least one language and choose from a range of special subject seminars based on our academics' wide range of research interests.

In cooperation with a supervisor, you will also research and write a dissertation on a topic of your choice. You will also plan, promote and execute a project aimed at presenting the ancient world to the wider public, with a member of staff acting as adviser.

Our Chinese-English Translation MA program will increase your understanding of the field of translation and interpreting. You will explore how practical translation is informed by theory, develop your verbal and written communication skills, and build your IT literacy to help you produce translation of the highest quality. Students graduate from the program equipped with specialist skills in interpreting and localisation, as well as transferable skills such as analytical thinking, research and collaboration, which are essential to today's increasingly global market.

Students coming to the UK from overseas not only learn advanced translation skills from and into Chinese, but also develop their English language competency and their knowledge of UK and international culture. The program is also open to students for whom English is a native language with a high level of Chinese, typically undergraduate level or higher.

Postgraduates are full members of the academic community, with the opportunity to participate in the many research seminars and conferences taking place within the Faculty of Arts.

The School of Modern Languages has an established record in translator training and excellent industry links. Its translation staff include practising professional translators and translation researchers. We are a corporate member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting and an institutional member of the American Translators’ Association (ATA). We are on the ATA’s list of approved providers of translator training. Students have an opportunity to obtain SDL Trados translation software certification.

Years one and two provide a broad background in biomedical science as well as information about viruses and the diseases they cause.

You will study the immune system and how it controls infection. You will also learn about autoimmune diseases that can occur if the immune system attacks the body's own tissues rather than an infectious agent.

In your final year you will review the main viral diseases of humankind in terms of their natural history, biology, molecular biology, immunology, pathogenesis and epidemiology. These include HIV, hepatitis B and C, papilloma, influenza, measles and coronaviruses, among others.

You will learn about cutting-edge issues in virology and immunology, including emerging viruses such as the SARS-CoV-2, Marburg and Ebola viruses.

You will also learn about the problems associated with the production of vaccines. You will normally work on a research project in either virology or immunology.
