Bachelor of Arts in Film and Spanish

at University of Bristol - Clifton Campus United Kingdom

Overview

Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and is the most common second language in the US. Studying a modern language in the context of its speakers' history, literature, experience and outlook can broaden horizons and challenge preconceptions, including those about one's own language and country.

In the Department of Film and Television, guided by leading scholars and practitioners, you will explore the history of film and television. You will consider theoretical perspectives, appreciate how films are made and engage in practical filmmaking activities.

You will study film alongside Spanish language, history and culture units, choosing from a wide range of options that allow you to pursue your own interests. Both departments offer a vibrant learning environment with research-led teaching.

You will spend your third year abroad on a work or study placement in a Spanish-speaking country, refining your language skills and cultural understanding. For further details of year abroad opportunities visit Global Opportunities.

In your final year you will return to Bristol, where you have the chance to undertake a placement in the creative industries.

Studying abroad in Europe fosters language skills and intellectual growth as well as developing your breadth of perspective.

If you're driven by intellectual curiosity and enjoy the satisfaction of cracking difficult puzzles, this course offers a rigorous foundation in mathematics that will help you stand out to top employers.

Our lecturers are passionate about their subject, with modules informed by cutting-edge research in fundamental mathematical abstractions, statistics and practical applications to global problems. Vocational units, currently including Financial Risk Management and Maths in Schools, prepare you for a successful career in industry. Opportunities to undertake a research project could inspire you to pursue postgraduate study.

The first two years of the course provide a broad background in mathematics, similar to our single honours mathematics degrees, and include relevant European language units.

Provided you fulfil the progression requirements of the Study Abroad in a Modern Language course at the end of year two, you will spend your third year abroad in one of our partner universities, studying mathematics in a foreign language. Visit our Global Opportunities website to find out where you can study.

You will return to Bristol to complete the fourth year of the degree, where you will benefit from a wide choice of third-year units.

This joint honours degree allows you to study two complementary disciplines, both of which ask you to think carefully about texts in their broader cultural and historical contexts. The course combines the broad historical knowledge and research skills gained in a history degree with the in-depth cultural awareness and advanced linguistic skills that come from studying a modern language.

You will join two departments with top researchers in a great diversity of fields and will be encouraged to develop expertise and research skills relevant to both disciplines while also considering the relationships between them.

Your third year will be spent in a Spanish-speaking country, where you will have the opportunity to explore these intersections in the distinct cultural and social context of your host country while studying or working. Those who choose to study at a university will be urged to select history-based options, while those who opt for work placements will be encouraged to seek placements in the heritage sector. Visit Global Opportunities to find out more about where you can study abroad.

This challenging, one-year taught master’s degree covers a range of advanced topics in multimedia signal processing and communications. These include the properties and limitations of modern communication channels and networks, alongside the coding and compression methods required for efficient and reliable wired and wireless audio-visual transmission. It provides an excellent opportunity to acquire the skills you will need for a career in one of the most dynamic and exciting fields in ICT.

The program builds on the research strengths of the Visual Information Laboratory and the Communication Systems and Networks Group within the Faculty of Engineering at Bristol. Both groups are highly regarded for combining fundamental research with strong industrial collaboration. Their innovative research has resulted in groundbreaking technology in image and video analysis, coding and communications. Both groups also offer extensive, state-of-the-art research facilities.

This MSc provides in-depth training in design, analysis and management skills relevant to the theory and practice of the communication networks industry. The program is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, one of only a handful of accredited programmes in this field in the UK.

Preserving the security of computers, connected devices and their data becomes more important every year. Mathematics plays a key role in both preventing and modelling security breaches, with many cybersecurity tools and algorithms being based on mathematical ideas.

This postgraduate program gives you a rigorous introduction to the underpinning theories in mathematics and will equip you with modern data science, analytical and computational tools to implement them.

Developed in collaboration with industry and government, our curriculum includes a broad variety of units, from strands of pure mathematics and data science to computer science and statistics. You will work at scale on large datasets to implement real-world cybersecurity solutions, gaining a qualification and experience in a field that has a recognised skills shortage.

The School of Mathematics has more than doubled in size over the last decade; in the most recent Research Excellence Framework, 87 per cent of our mathematical sciences research was recognised as world-leading or internationally excellent. Learn alongside expert academics, challenging you to consider some of the big security questions facing us today.

The program is well balanced, covering a wide range of topics in engineering science and engineering practice.

Our curriculum embeds a diverse set of professional engineering and management skills spanning four core thematic areas:

  • Design and manufacture
  • Dynamics and control
  • Materials
  • Thermofluids.

Years one and two are common to all mechanical engineering students and cover the fundamental principles of mechanical engineering. Teaching is via lectures, laboratories, design classes and short projects in modelling and manufacturing.

In your third year, you will apply the principles learned to real, complex engineering applications. A major element is the open-ended individual research project, which requires independent and creative thinking.

Years one and two provide a broad background in biomedical science as well as information about viruses and the diseases they cause.

You will study the immune system and how it controls infection. You will also learn about autoimmune diseases that can occur if the immune system attacks the body's own tissues rather than an infectious agent.

In your final year you will review the main viral diseases of humankind in terms of their natural history, biology, molecular biology, immunology, pathogenesis and epidemiology. These include HIV, hepatitis B and C, papilloma, influenza, measles and coronaviruses, among others.

You will learn about cutting-edge issues in virology and immunology, including emerging viruses such as the SARS-CoV-2, Marburg and Ebola viruses.

You will also learn about the problems associated with the production of vaccines. You will normally work on a research project in either virology or immunology.
